I was chosen at random to participate in a promo at Spirit Mtn., where I go into a plexiglass box with money loosely strewn on the floor, and a powerful fan system blowing into it.
Once the timer started the money started floating / flying by me, and I was to grab as much a possible and stick it through a slot.
Well, I did very badly, but I'm not sure why, other than "it was all happening so fast."
Any suggestions as to how one can best take advantage of a promo like this?

Were there any restrictions? Did they have to be in flight? could you grab from the ground or ceiling? Did you have to capture it and put it in the slot immediately, or could you put them in your pocket and push them through at once?Quote: MrVI was chosen at random to participate in a promo at Spirit Mtn., where I go into a plexiglass box with money loosely strewn on the floor, and a powerful fan system blowing into it.

Trapping them against your body seems to work well.

If you were allowed to swat them against the glass with one hand and pick them off with the other, then shove them thru the slot once you had a handful, I think that's how I'd approach it. Haven't done it before, and I suppose every place makes its own rules.
Picking them out of the air would be really hard.

If allowed, I'd think picking up the bottom of your shirt and biting the top of it (so some air could still flow through but then you could trap the bills) would work quite well as a "net" for the cash. And no, you don't have to lift your shirt up and flash everyone, only hold it out away from your body.
Playing it correctly means you've already won.

The bills were mostly lower denomination, but some twenties and fifties were there.
No restrictions as to how to collect them and put them through the slot in the necessary time frame.
Once the fan started going the bills were constantly moving, and were not on the floor ready to be easily harvested.
A bit of sensory overload, coupled to an adrenalin rush led to me collecting less than one hundred dollars worth of bills.

The one I saw there was a box to deposit the fake bills and it seemed the people who stood close to the box had the bills come right to them. Really depends on the rules a strategy. The one I observed recently, my only complaint was unfairness for using the same fake currency every drawing period, because they got damaged from previous contestants and were difficult putting them through the slot. People did pretty well nonetheless getting decent free play.
If it was keep what you walk out with, taking off your pants might be a good strategy, if you can keep them around your thighs and throw money down your pants legs.

They did this promo here once back in the 90's. One of the drawings, a guy came in with two garbage bags full of entries for the drum. Naturally, one of his was picked.
