European Pope now at -125 after the big move by Scola to be level with Turkson on their books, however Pinnacle still have Turkson as solo favourite.
Who can distance themselves the furthest from this???

Your bet is starting to look even better now, Centrebet.com now have a Euro Pope at -154. Pinnacle still have Turkson as clear favourite but the gap has shrunk and Scola is making a late charge.
Quote: FrGambleSomebody not on the list that in all seriousness I think has a chance is Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York. The message seems pretty clear from Pope Benedict we need a dynamic and engaging new Pope that can respond to the needs of the world. Cardinal Dolan, while a back-slapper, is highly respected for his orthodoxy and recently led all the Cardinals in a special gathering about the New Evangelization. If you want a friendly and charismatic new John XXIII, then look no further than Tim Dolan. I know an American Pope would be crazy, but these are historic crazy times we live in. Don't count him out.
Sorry father, I have to go with conventional wisdom here. An American pope would be crazy. While in 1970 the mainline Protestant churches claimed more than 30 percent of the population as members, today they are a minority among American Protestants, claiming approximately 18 percent of American adults.
With evangelicals outnumbering Catholics, and the huge burden of simply being an American it is impossible.
Graphic from PEW forum
I don't think it is at all racist to say that I don't imagine the church choosing an African to be pope without first acknowledging the centuries of loyal Catholicism in Latin America. In 1975 the population of Europe was 675 milion while Latin America was 322 million, but since the overwhelming majority of LA is Catholic, I would assume by this time that Catholics in LA outnumbered Catholics in Europe.

So, has anyone ever refused the Papacy?
With the way it works it would be nipped in the bud long before it got to the point of electing him. Nobody outside of the college has been elected pope although ANY male catholic could in theory become pope at any election. And those in the conclave who dont want to be considered would simply ask to not be considered once they knew they were being considered. The dean of the college asks the newly elected pontiff one last time if he does indeed desire to be the pope- so yea, they could at that time say no thanks- but it wont in any realistic fashion happen.
yes, the Fox news contributor. Good guy. The Ghana Cardinal seems to be out of play.Quote: EvenBobAnd I hope the new Pope is Italian so the world can

He gonna be 77 in a few months. He did whatever kids

Perhaps there is some interest in catching a glimpse of the world's last working monarchy with some real power.
Hey, all I know for sure is I have a brand new polo shirt from the Wiz (who would probably make a pretty good Pope himself). God Bless Pope Francis the first!
Quote: FrGambleI gotta say I am surprised, not so much that he is not from Europe
So you think its an accident they elect this tired
old guy who just happens to have parents born
in Italy? I don't believe in coincidences, and you
better believe this is what the people of Rome are
talking about.
Frank Sinatra's parents were from Italy. He always
considered himself an Italian before he was an
American. He was loved and adored in Italy. So
will this pope be loved and adored in Italy, for
the same reasons.
Quote: FrGambleI gotta say I am surprised, not so much that he is not from Europe, but that he is so old and that many people don't use charismatic or exciting when describing him.
I think this makes it a trend. The hierarchy seems to prefer older men who won't be around that long and won't 1) accumulate power and/or 2) make too many changes.
Of course, we'd all have a better sense of what "it means" if we had any access to the process. But the whole election process is top secret. I don't mind that, BTW, people can do with their property as they see fit.

Indeed, congratulations! First I lose $2 to Ahigh and now this. I'll PM you for an address.
Interesting that the winner was not even on the Pinnacle list. They should have had a field option.
Wiz, it's funny that you would refer to the new pope as the "winner"Quote: WizardIndeed, congratulations! First I lose $2 to Ahigh and now this. I'll PM you for an address.

Wait, so did Pinnacle, "Clear the board," with that, so to speak, or are they calling it a Push?
Quote: treetopbuddyO.K.....I learned today that the new pope has a degree in Chemistry. He earned the degree 55 years ago....is the degree really that pertinent?
No. It just means he is a well-educated man.
Quote: treetopbuddyO.K.....I learned today that the new pope has a degree in Chemistry. He earned the degree 55 years ago....is the degree really that pertinent?
Yes, ti is. Then, as now, the Philosopher's Stone was only twenty to thirty years away :P
More seriously, I think it means he earned his degree after Linus Pauling applied Quantum Mechanics to chemistry. Then it would be relevant if he wanted to discuss chemistry. Most advances since have occured in technique rather than theory.
Are you requesting an inquisition Mission?Quote: Mission146Wait, so did Pinnacle, "Clear the board," with that, so to speak, or are they calling it a Push?
wow, if you say so....I bet the Pope could make a wicked cherry bomb with that chemistry degree.Quote: NareedYes, ti is. Then, as now, the Philosopher's Stone was only twenty to thirty years away :P

Father,
While you certainly deserve your polo shirt, I think a small rosary gift to Mike is in order considering that the new pope is ethnically European. Argentina was second only to the United States in the number of European immigrants received. As recently as 1990, the largest country for foreign born immigrants in Argentina was Italy. When the country began having severe financial problems Italy extended an invitation to any Italians or children of Italian immigrants to reverse migrate back to Italy (given their low birth rate). Since 1990 recent immigrants from other South American countries have overtaken the older Italian immigrants who are dying off.
It is interesting how many betting sites and experts did not give Bergoglio any chance at getting elected. Given that he was the runner up (rumored) in 2005, I don't know why he wasn't ranked higher. It seems outsiders thought that you only get one moment in the sun, and he missed his and was now too old.
Quote: treetopbuddywow, if you say so.....
I do say so ;)

I agree with this. Just like Sinatra was an Italian-American, this
guy is an Italian-Argentinian.

If I had a vote, the degree in Chemistry, no matter how old, would have had a strong favorable influence.

To be honest, I was rather disappointed to lose this bet. While in Costa Rica I purchased a Virgin de Los Angeles bracelet to go with it. I'm trying to trade something with FrG for the rosary anyway. I should not win for the reason you stated, the bet was not on the ethnicity of the next pope.
Here is my best suggestion for a trade. An 8" x 10" autographed enlargement of this photo I took myself of Pope John Paul II when he visited Baltimore. I took it from atop a ladder I lugged for blocks to the parade route and took the shot with a long telephoto lens.
No response yet to my offer.
Quote: EvenBobI agree with this. Just like Sinatra was an Italian-American, this guy is an Italian-Argentinian.
The "Southern Cone" was sparsely populated at the conquest, and was initially populated mostly by Spanish. They had the same style European immigration as the USA did during the time between our civil war and WWI.
Population growth has been much closer to the USA than to other Latin Countries. The demography is much more European descent than the tropics.
Average Annual Population Growth 1950-2013
1.17% United States
1.66% Chile
1.46% Argentina
0.66% Uruguay
2.13% Brazil
2.26% Mexico
2.20% Colombia
2.41% Paraguay
2.54% Guatemala
At the above rates follows are years to double your population
59 United States
48 Argentina
42 Chile
105 Uruguay
33 Brazil
31 Mexico
32 Colombia
29 Paraguay
28 Guatemala
Quote: treetopbuddyO.K., I get it, his degree in Chemistry is unique to somebody that rises to the Papacy. . Theological degrees are probably much more common. The man of science does a 180 and takes up religion....
This actually happens more than one would expect I think; I have no data to back that up though...lol

I think this along with the Wizard of Odds shirt as the original bet mandated is a fair trade for the Rosary, in my humble opinion.

Lemaitre died in the 1960's, but George Smoot (who advance evidence for the theory)Nobel Prize winner from UC Berkeley appeared on TBBT CHUCK LORRE posted a surprisingly nasty insult on his blog. The joke was told on the Dead Hooker Juxtaposition where another pretty actress moves into the building and steal's Penny's place as Queen Bee.
The quantum physics joke Penny tells the guys in tonight's episode was told to us by Nobel award-winning physicist, Dr. George Smoot. Penny tells it in about twenty seconds. Dr. Smoot's version probably took about three minutes, although it felt a lot longer. No one had the heart to tell him to get to the punch line, proving my hypothesis that in addition to time slowing down as you accelerate, it also grinds to a halt when you're being courteous to a genius.
Thanks for the joke, Doc!
