Hello all,

I really enjoy unintentionally bad movies, in some cases, moreso than genuinely good movies. I’ve been on the road quite a bit recently so I’ve been running low on good podcasts. I’m a weekly listener of gambling with an edge and have quite a few favorite episodes I’ve listened to multiple times because I thought the guests were genuinely good (smallcap, romes, this one ap who donked his money off playing craps).

I also have episodes that were of the “so bad it’s good” variety. The Phoenix episode definitely was up there. The recent sia layta episode was so cringey I actually winced several times at the blatant lack of poker knowledge, but it was a great laugh. Do you all have similar episodes where it was clear the guest had no idea about what he/she was talking?

Are you a fan of the Horror genre?

Plenty of “it’s so bad it’s good” choices in that area.

Sorry, to be clear, I was just referring to gambling with an edge episodes.

As I recall, the interview was awkward from the start because the hosts (understandably) couldn't grasp the concept of why women are disadvantaged at a poker table.

But bad episodes are vastly outnumbered by good ones. Sometimes an episode will briefly go astray, such as when they answer stupid questions on the listener email shows. One questioner argued that a BJ player shouldn't raise his bet in plus counts because maybe the dealer will catch all the aces and tens. I think that one could have been ignored.

If you really want cringeworthy listening, probably some of the other gambling podcasts are reliably brain-dead. I've tried a few of them, but I usually delete after a few minutes.

I haven't listened to that one yet. But if I could put some kind of hologram over myself and play poker as a woman, I would and my win rate would go up quite a bit.

Actually, I found the episode cringey because it was clear the guest had no concept of poker game theory and was just trying to sucker people into buying her book by using buzzwords like “aikido poker.” Munchkin seemed to want to challenge her on this, but thought better of it in the moment (though he did sort of laugh about it with their most recent female poker guest who seemed to actually understand poker reasonably well).

I listened again to the first few minutes. She complains that nobody respects her raises, causing her AA to be cracked by a man with a flush draw. I'm no expert, but presumably a bet sizing adjustment would remedy the situation, assuming a no-limit game.

Yeah, you saw PH got his aces cracked in the first round the other day at WSOP? So long, 10k buy-in. Felt bad for him.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Didn't see it. Plenty of videos of his raises being called, him losing the pot to an inferior 2 card holding, and him going ballistic.

If so, she is clueless.

Phil H. is a crybaby, or a performer or whatever, but he does understand that you want people to make -ev bets against you. He just cries about it when it doesn't work out.

It's too bad, because I was saving that episode and thought it would be very interesting. It would be fascinating to hear about the experience of playing as the other gender, if the speaker understood both poker and human behavior well.

Men also softplay women. I have seen guys check back the stone cold nuts to a woman just to be nice to her.

Truth be told, I sometimes have to make a conscious effort to play my best against a woman. You go easy on them and are nice to them in every other area of life, and that behavior can carry over if you aren't careful. You have to remember that you can punch anyone in the mouth in poker. Women, the disabled, drunks...

Come to think of it, I had an online account or two with a female name back in the day. I remember in PLO once, I missed everything and had like $1.50 to bet into like a $300 pot. I did it and the guy tanked and I said something like, "just save your money, honey." He folded and I showed and he had a total meltdown. Toxic masculinity, you know.

One of the earliest episodes was with Laurie from the MIT blackjack team. I saved that episode in my phone for months. Not only was it informative but she has a great sense of humor. Her and Bob really played well off of each other especially at the end when he ever so slightly stepped over the line but somehow he got away with it.

I’ve tried listening to other podcasts but none compares to GWAE. You Can Bet On That is ok but all they talk about is craps and I don’t find that interesting.

The Phoenix episode definitely had a cringe factor of 9.2 out of 10.

Yes, she made no sense there. First, if you hold AA and people are calling you, that is typically a GOOD thing. It's also a very easy adjustment to make if you want fewer callers. Just bet larger, as you suggest.

"They don't respect my raises" is an cliched complaint of players who are not good, but think they are. It's a common joke in poker forums, or at least used to be, but it's so old that it may have run its course and gotten old even as a joke.

I know this isn't GWAE podcast related, but it's so funny I still want to share anyways... In the variety of "so bad it's pure comedic gold" I'm going to say "Busty Cops." When we were teens my buddy had HBO and we saw "Busty Cops" and were like "cool... boobies" but omg the story line was SO BAD it was pure comedic gold (plus some boobies for those interested). The directors definitely leaned in to it and did it intentionally (as one of the 3 cop girls used her fingers and special effects as her gun, while the other 2 got props at least lol).

GWAE wise, I think others have denoted the one that comes to mind the most =P.
Playing it correctly means you've already won.

What was wrong with the Phoenix one? I don’t particularly remember it, but I know him. Just wondering.

Yoshi is legit. But it is good to go on a heater vs negative variance when you start out.
