three way craps

So I was out playin craps last night with a good buddy I frequently play with......He always plays the same way...$25 P/l bet with $100 odds(its a 10X odds table)...and other assorted place and come bets as well....BUT he always plays a 3 way craps($3) on the come out.....As some sort of "hedge" bet, I drives me crazy.....but hey its his money he is throwing away...So I said to him..."why play a 3 way craps? Why not play $3 on any craps"...he said 3 way craps is a better bet.....I said "No, your confused a 3 way 7 is a better bet than any 7 but a 3 way craps is not a better bet than any carps".......I'm correct right?

out of 4 craps rolls 2x1 3x2 and 12x1 any craps at 7:1 with $3 bet would be $84

With 3 ways craps bet you would only net $82

do you mean by a $3 three way craps bet $3 on aces, $3 on ace-deuce and $3 on boxcars... or... $1 on each of those three?

$4 on any craps would give him the hedge to "insure" his $25 passline bet.

I use a $5 horn high ace-deuce to hedge my $25 pl which gives me:
$1 on aces pays $26
$1 on 12 pays $26
$1 on yo pays $11
$2 on 3 pays $27

Those are the numbers I get-just depends on how often 2 and 12 get thrown vs the 3. It's a bad bet except in the rear view mirror. I admit I've invested in a few horn high ace-dueces before, especially when the little asian lady at the table screams aye-doo, aye-doo.

I assume Any Craps is better than 3-way craps in terms of house edge. Any craps (7 to 1) has a house edge of 11.11%, the same as ace-deuce (15 to 1). Since Aces/Twelve each have a house edge of 13.89% (30 to 1), I assume this means that the house edge for 3-way craps is worse than Any Craps.

So I believe the OP is correct.

any craps for $3

$21(4/36)-$3(32/36) = -$0.33

3way craps for $1 each

$13(2/36)+$28(2/36)-$3(32/36) = -$0.39

Yes, the three way is worse than the any crap, because the 2/12 is worse than a 3 bet, but the Any Crap is the same as betting a 3. People look at it though as winning more if the 2 or 12 is rolled. As a dealer I see this all the time. People take a dollar crap cheque. Crap is rolled. Take the extra two bucks and take the crap to a three way crap. I always scream in my head "YOU IDIOT, THAT IS A STUPID BET, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!!" Of course when the guy who's tipping a bunch is doing it, I think he must be a pretty smart guy..haha.

The three way would be better if the shooter believes he has hit a patch of high/lows.

It really stinks to see the High/Low get their line bet reset, with change, while you must reach into your rack to make your quarter on the line whole.

I know it's terrible...but I've had some good hits off of the same bet (Except the times I won was when I pressed it to a $25 High-3, then a $100 High-3...$600 for me and $40 for the boys!)
