I know a hedge bet in craps is a bad bet, but if you had to make one hedge bet, are there any thoughts on the best one you could make? Thanks

it's too bad "any 7" is such a sucker bet since it is otherwise so obvious, once the point is established.
I am thinking one situation is when too many come bets wind up being points, when that wasnt what you really like to risk, a guy might need to take off the free odds. That's not exactly hedging of course. But trying to set up a DP against it is a hedge.

There is no hedge bet that isn't a total ripoff.
I like to place 6 or 8 sometimes, if the point is an obscure number setting me up to lose. It's an easy win that pays back the lost point wager, unless you seven out entirely. But that's it.

If you're playing don't pass/don't come, the fire bet is a good hedge.

I currently play a hedge now and then... after the point is established $30 don't come.. place 6&8 for $12.. after one roll if 6or8 hit collect $14 and then place 6&8 for $24.. collect $6 if 7 out, or lose two of the $14 if 6 or 8 made. If 4 or 10 then place $20 and win $10 if either are hit or a seven out. If 5 or 9 then place $25 and win $5 either way. 2 & 3 have a plus one against the 11 and 12 is a wash. This works pretty good most of the time. Looking for something better.

Since someone else has mentioned the fire bet, I thought I would add this. I think there is a thread around here that discusses the situation where you have a fire bet in play and several different points have already been made and an additional point has been set. I think the conclusion was that in that case, a hedge of laying the point can be a very rational choice and not a ripoff. But the situation is rather special.

Well, yes. But in that case, the fire bet was a long shot you got ripped off on in the first place, and probably have wasted more money fire-betting before getting this one.

It seems like you're looking for hedging STRATEGIES, but I've always had a weakness for the craps bet on the come out. I really really hate it when they say "craps check".
