I really do appreciate your support, knowledge, and experience introducing/teaching my grandson and his wife this game called Craps. I know it can be overwhelming to new folks so "Keep it simple" is key advice. I hadn't given much thought to what my expectations are for my kids. I'd say I hope they each win (maybe double their money), get a feel for this game, and have a fun time.
I hope to instill in them the notion that we are here to win money and not just to have fun donating money. There is a time to Color-Up and leave.
Thanks again,
Dick

Hi Dick,
Craps is a recreational game. You play it as a fun way to move your wealth back and forth a little while enjoying the adrenaline rush. No harm in that. It is fun.
But it's a game where you are destined to tend to lose to the house edge. No doubt your tutors did not tell you that. Some just poo-poo the idea of losing because they 'know stuff' like hitting and running or money management. That's lobblocks.
If you instill into your family members that they are there to win, then you do them a severe dis-service. I hope you can show them how to lose as that is a far more useful skill to learn.
No. There is not a time to Color-Up and leave. At least not one you can foresee with any useful insight.
Did you introduce your daughter to the joys of mild recreational drugs? If not, why not?

No, you are there to lose. Winning is accidental. The best time to leave is before you start playing. You shouldn't think that the goal of gambling is to win money. You should gamble because you want to have fun. Losing is normal and expected, but if you're lucky, sometimes you can win.
the only way to win money (other than pure luck)Quote: 90crapsplayer66I hope to instill in them the notion that we are here to win money and not just to have fun donating money.
is if you really believe that each roll of the dice are NOT random.
In other words, the SHOOTER determines what each roll will be and NOT randomness.
Just say you know it, but cant prove it.
show by setting the dice a certain way and tossing them a certain way
you bet on those numbers that roll.
NEVER bet on one shooter who does NOT set the dice (many will call that person a total fool and even worse names) and take their time to make an effort to influence the dice roll.
I say, you and them will have so much more fun
because you know the game better than most do.
and when you win money, it will be because of your skill and not just dumb luck that so many suffer from already.
do what makes you feel good while gambling.
then you can say why you lost or won in any session played.
NEVER bet on the don't pass or don't come and lay the odds.
real craps players that want to win skip and avoid them bets at all costs.
this is just what one will pick up from standing and listening to the so-called experts that play at a craps table.

Are all those so-called experts millionaires?
Thanks for your regrettably accurate assessment of the nature of Craps, of gambling in general. I know you are "right on" and I need to emphasize your thoughts with my kids. In fact, I think I'll read them this response from you, and others. They need to know that the odds are against all of us over time.
Your last statement is crucial as to how I approach the game: Am I having fun?
Thanks again ,
Dick
"No, you are there to lose. Winning is accidental."
I know you are correct in this analysis and I'll share your comments with my kids.
We're going tomorrow and hopefully we'll have a lot of fun, and be lucky.
Dick
Thanks for apparently taking my comments as constructive criticism.Quote: 90crapsplayer66Good Afternoon OnceDear,

My dear old Dad used to say that "If you are enjoying the game, then you're already winning"
I have no criticism of recreational playing or recreational gambling and if you want to show your younger family a great way of having fun, then all power to your elbow. But I suggest that you take some of the tuition that you've received with a big pinch of salt. You have some advisors who espouse some pretty controversial ideas ( bullcr4p ).
Gambling is addictive. Never underestimate the risk that if your children and grandchildren might see some beginners luck, that could undermine their wealth for the rest of their lives. Best hope is that you/they just observe the best ways to lose slowly and steadily and enjoy the fun of it with no illusions.

I hope that your kids will have average luck or bad luck and lose again and again until they have enough of it or understand the nature of gambling. That would be the best for them. Wining, especially big winning can be very dangerous for new players. They can be deluded into thinking that they can win again and again. After all, if they can win a lot with minimal experience, how can't they win a lot more when they have more experience? I hope that you and your kids will have a lot of fun.

Indeed.
Some guy on the radio today was talking about how numerous Americans are now addicted to gambling, and that they turn to gambling to escape from tough economic times.
I agree many are now addicted, but that is only because so many more casinos have been built in the last several decades.
It has little to do with poor economic times: times are actually pretty good right now.
It will be interesting to see how the psychologists respond to the increasing rate of addiction: will they devise new, effective treatment modalities, or just repackage the same crap that's out there now?
I do appreciate your constructive criticism, and the time you've invested today in me and my understanding of the real nature of this game. I will address these ideas with my 26 year old grandson tomorrow.
I'll let you know how our visit tomorrow goes It's true, win or lose, we'll pace ourselves over a couple hours of fun.
Thanks----your friend,
Dick
Thanks for your imput. I will take your words to heart. And my responsibility is to lead my kids with "eye-wide-open."
Dick
I would suggest asking gson how a casino makes it's money from gambling games.Quote: 90crapsplayer66I will address these ideas with my 26 year old grandson tomorrow.
whatever the answer he gives you
give this
here is a simple game to play.
cost $1 to play
flip a fair coin.
call it in the air and let it land.
IF you call incorrectly, you lose the $1
and get ready for next game.
IF you call if correctly, YOU WIN!
and you get the $1 bet back PLUS 80 cents as your winnings.
YAHOO!
sounds fair right?
why should you win $1 if you win?
some games you only have a net win of 60 cents on a $1 bet.
and those games are played millions of times each year.
what happens when you make 1000 of these bets?
what can you expect?
a good example using simple math
have fun
Sally
Dick
yes, do have fun!Quote: 90crapsplayer66Thanks Sally----that's a good and simple to understand example. Dick
I gave just a very simple example.
some winnings are much higher and some games offer many levels of winnings.
the bottom line is
the more you play casino games that 'short pay on a win'
the LESS chance you will have of ending even or ahead after X number of bets.
Sally
Unfortunately I don't always follow this sage advice...
I hear you. Quit often I'll get that feeling that the "7" is about to roll, and I should have the dealer turn my bets off. But I hang in there for another "mind"win and sure enough, the 7 rolls. I've got to trust my gut feelings more......I mean, that next roll is certainly not the last roll of the night. Not only do we have to know the game rules, we have to know ourselves.
