Hi everyone,

I am very new to the game of craps. I was playing for the 3rd time this past weekend at the Orleans. I noticed the gentleman next me would only play the Pass bet on his turn to roll. During other shooters, after a point was made, he would lay money straddling the Pass line. Is this an odds bet? I thought you had to have a Pass bet in play to lay odds. If someone could explain this, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

He was placing the point.

The payoff is different.

Yeah, a bit confusing.

See: Wizard's craps guide

Instead of making a passline bet, he waits for a point number to be established and then bets on that number by making a place bet.

Normally he would hand the place bet money to the dealer, who would place it up above, on the edge of the number itself, but bettors have the option to put the money straddling the bottom of the pass line to show they are placing the point.

As long as its not too busy a table, the crew will probably confirm "placing the point" with him the first time he does it. Just to avoid confusion. If its a come out roll and you straddle the line like that they don't know what you are doing and will be certain you don't claim it was a PassLine bet if seven rolls but an attempt to place point if iits a crap roll.

Today at MGM, I saw a guy put $100 on the passline. After the point was established, he put $500 as odds and then $5 straddling the line a little bit to the side. That turned out to be a dealer toke bet that paid off even money regardless of what the point was.

Thanks everyone. 'Placing the point' makes sense.

Was the minimum more than 5? If the min. were 5 and the wager was placed "straddling" the line, should not odds have been payed? Either 7/6 etc.? If the 5 were a toke on the line, even money pays just like a passline, correct?

Thanks for quoting! A lot can be missed otherwise, even stepping out for dinner, in fact.
