Are the dice used in Craps, equally balanced on all sides? If so, is it because opposite sides of a die, when totaled add up to have the same number of pips, regardless which sides you are looking at?

Yes they are balanced. The pips are made of the same material, and thus have the same density, as the rest of the cube.

What if the side of the die with 1 pip, had 2 pips instead, would that change the balance?

No, the pips are the exact same thing as the rest of the die, just a different color. It wouldn't matter if the entire face was a "pip."

What about a die, in which the pips are indented into the die?

So then, could any shape, letters or numbers be placed on the sides of those dice and they remain balanced?

Dice, including pips are perfectly in balance when they come from the manufacturers. Casinos use callipers to make sure that they are in fact i balance.

If you want to change the balance you have to introduce something with a discernable weight in order to affect the outcome of the regular roll of the dice. I would assume once you do so it would be noticeable enough for the casino to pick up on it immediately but I'm not a scientist, I don't know how that would work!

Tomspur, you are saying the pips themselves have an effect on the balance of the die? Where their placed, and how many?

My concern is if anyone would come up with a new dice game, would the pips have to be equally placed and equal sizes of pips need to be used to pass the caliper test?

There isn't anything special about the pips. They are the exact same thing as the rest of the die, just a different color. The pips could be anything - letters, numbers, dots, squares, skulls, whatever. The size doesn't matter; they are the exact same material so it would be the same as having a completely blank face.

But what if the number of pips is prime?

The pips on each side have an equal volume, and are made of the same material as the die. Thus the die is equally weighted on all sides. The only other consideration is that the design is center-face weighted
Some people need to reimagine their thinking.

That's why they use three prime numbers and three non-prime numbers. Duh!

Aside from the Bill Cosby's responding, thank you for responses. I would like to create a new dice game from the ground up, that would be easy for players. a game that uses 6 sided dice, but without the traditional 1-6 pips used. I would have to know that these dice will be precisely balanced, before I proceed.

The pips are part of the dice. They are not painted or stuck on the dice. They cannot be removed without disfiguring the dice.

No, I did not say that you canc hange the shape or the actual amount of pips, I merely said that you would have to place an outside substance on the dice or have access to the manufacturing process in order to tamper with the dice.

If I were you I would start with a dice manufacturer and speak to them about customizing your dice. There are some very good ones but obviously customization takes longer and in order to make the run worthwhile you need to order at least 1000 sticks of dice. (Last i recall)

All the best!

Only if you are curious about unsubstantiated wild claims and strawmen appearing in roundly discredited productions.
