I managed to get to a 61k bankroll and it looks like ill be well funded going into this 'adventure'. Rent is going to be $800 a month(All utilities included in price) and around $300 a month for fuel(driving) and $300 a month for food, so about 16k in expenses for the year. For bankroll risk purposes i will play to a 50k bankroll and assume about 8k expenses(6 months of blackjack play) as that should be a good conservative estimate of being 'ahead' from my blackjack play, especially since i plan to play and grind out A LOT of hours. Will keep my max bet at no more than 2x300 at big strip casinos and 2x200 at off-strip casinos as i want to try and fly under the radar as much as possible. Will show my max bet once and be out the door. Maybe add in an additional wong-in, but no more than 2 shoes per session as most casinos need 3 shoes to figure out your play. I also plan to hit up 9 stores each day. Each session in the long run should equate to about 45 minutes max with this criteria and should help me fly under the radar, or at least i hope so. Of course i got other tricks up my sleeve to manipulate the pit bosses, but ill refrain from posting about it.
2500 miles to go. Now only if i could find some good sized 'shoes'.
Why does it matter where you run into the variance at? It makes no sense to wait unless you are going to be doing something significantly different in Vegas.Quote: ZenKinGHopefully i don't run into some horrible variance in the next 2 weeks or perhaps just not play at all and wait for the trip.
People here might tell you to wait, but that's only because they are tired of hearing excuses.
$800 a month sounds like a weekly? If it's a weekly don't count on it being a flat $800 once they toss in all the extra charges(and they do). What's the general location?
Where will you do your laundry? It's usually $1 + to wash and $1+ to dry.
It's best if stay away from confrontation at all costs.
If in fact, you do make it to Vegas, I wish you much luck(because saying happy variance is gay/nerdy).
800+300+300=16.8K plus others, than over 20K.

Not too far from the strip. I was originally looking to avoid the areas by the strip, but I had someone recommend me this place and it has good reviews and seems to be tucked away in a good area among the bad.

I think he means other shit you haven't calculated.
Cable/internet is probably included if everything else is. But cell phone, car/health/volcano insurance, laundry (although cheap), miscellaneous stuff, car repair or other emergency stuff. $300 a month for food is probably pretty light. That's $10 a day in food. I'm sure there's other stuff I can't think of. Maybe entertainment....idk what you do for fun, but fun stuff costs money. Girlfriend if you swing that way.
Although I might be or have been negative about all this, I do wish you success.

Plenty of women for sure. Yea i guess i havent factored in the 'entertainment' expenses. But i've always been a tight budget good with money type of guy so im not too worried about that and overspending. All utilities are included even electric. Car repair really isnt an expense. Being a car enthusiast, my car has and always is in pretty mint condition so apart from an oil change every 4000-5000 miles(yes the 3000 miles thing is a myth), im not too worried about that expense. Car insurance is already paid off. I guess the only other expense would be my $50 monthly cell phone bill, forgot about that, but thats not a big expense, might even get a lower plan as there are many carriers doing about $30-$40 a month now.
Im a pretty even keel guy, sure ill have fun, but not until i amass a much larger bankroll, im not failing at this endeavor. Last thing i want happening is having to return home and being labeled a 'failure' and having everyone tell me how wrong i was. I actually might even lower my stakes even more to be even more safe of a prolonged losing streak even though my ROR is already 0.1%
Since you only need an ID, small deposit and 1 week of rent to get into them places,
there are many criminals staying at ALL of the locations. There are lots of people selling, buying and doing drugs. There's lots of prostitution and just a mix of crazy ass people from all walks of life(not all of them are bad).
You should be fine as long as you mind your own business. In my experience, when walking to and from your car, the 7-11, the office or whatever, It's best to keep your head up and give people a casual friendly(but not too friendly) quick nod as you make eye contact and pass them by. I think it's a bad idea to keep your head down, look away, veer or shy away from people. People might think your weak/scared or what's this guys problem? what's he got to hide?
You will probably be asked if you have or want to buy drugs and sh*t, among other things.
"Nah, I'm good" in a casual tone and expression is the way to go. It's much better than a "NO".
Might be a good idea to take a cheap easy class at the community college or UNLV. You will get a student ID, discounts at various places, meet some girls and make some friends.

With your itinerary now known,it is a near-certainty that the outlaws and brigands who lurk on the wagon trails to The American West will almost certainly bushwhack you enroute to Las Vegas.

Some tips of living in Vegas.
1. You made the smart move by having utilities included with rent. During summer months, it gets scorching hot and I've run up electric bills as much as $350 for a 1200 sq condo due to the AC unit
2. You can live as cheap as you want or as lavish as you want. As RS has pointed out, $10 for food seems very low. One way to make that work is to use comps/credits to eat when available, and taking advantage of locals casino buffets to fill yourself up. Some of the Stations casinos have really great bargain buffets with players card, and if you can stuff a whole day's worth of calories in a single meal, you can get by. If you try to do this at a strip buffet, you'll automatically pay 3X-4X. Get a Nevada drivers license. You'd be surprised how many eateries offer locals discounts.
3. If you have a nice car, sell it and buy beater. The Vegas heat will destroy your car unless you have a garage. The only good thing about it is that Vegas has dry heat, but otherwise the sun damage will beat up your paint, interiors, and seats.
4. Watch out for the obvious pitfalls. You tell yourself that you're even keel. Once you get a group of friends, maybe even a GF, you may find yourself sucked up in the limelights of Vegas. Many folks I know who wanted to "grind it" in Vegas did okay initially, but ended up overextending themselves on extra curricular activities and their bankroll slowly dried up. I say, enjoy Vegas as much as you can, but make sure you build a wall around you and stay disciplined.
5. Disclaimer: I'm not a counter or an AP, but I know a handful of people I call friends who currently are or have in the past grinded for a living. Their biggest advice was to treat APing like a job not a leisure sport. Also to separate "work aka Blackjack" with your life. They all complained that it can be a lonely world, and if they could have done it all over again, they wish they could have separated the two for the beginning instead of learning to later in their careers.
6. Watch out for girls who will take your money. If you want to date, make sure you do your checks. There are a lot of girls who are after money (i'm sure this runs true in a lot of other places, but Vegas seems to have tons more.)
7. Don't make any permanent decisions. I have two "AP" friends who called it quits not lasting more than 4 months for various reasons. I applaud you for taking a risk and a leap. However, there is no shame in folding when you know this isn't working out for you.
I wish you the best of luck. Just don't get cocky. Even good APs have bad days at work.
Dashboards, to a lesser extent.
You really need nitrogen in the tires out here.
Quote: mcallister3200I had a couple month period when trying to raise a BR in LV where I lived on a $100 a month on food, so $10 a day it can be done if motivated. It was pretty much strictly 2 buffet comps a day with $1-$2 tips, probably can't do $100 a month if you don't have the comps unless On a strict PBJ, ramen, rice and beans, frozen/canned veggies diet.
I think $10 a day in food would be easy for me and that is without using any comps. I could probably manage on $5-$6 a day if I tried hard.
Free phone, as well.
Three years ago, I did the FoodStamp challenge, where I tried to live for a month on ,I think ,$8 a day.
With planning, it wasn't hard at all. Ate a lot of Captain Crunch- it was on sale for 4 boxes for $5, and more spaghetti and meat sauce than normal, but the hardest part was not eating out much. I did use a BOGO coupon for two Whoppers one day and ate a few items off Taco Bells dollar menu. Even had two Spicy McChickens once.
I ended the month with a few dollars left.

food should be near $0 because of Caesars diamond Lounges.
there are like half a dozen in Vegas, each location having a different choice of foods.
Op, with a $50k budget, take a short trip to Harrah's Lake Tahoe and make Diamond or even 7stars.
they have a 3/5play 9-6 Jacks or Better (99.54%) $1/$2 denom at $10 per tier credit.
with 7stars, follow this strategy to live rent free for over a year because 7stars are guaranteed free rooms:

Well regarding food expense, I tend to use a fasting lifestyle way of eating, which is called intermittent fasting. This also isnt some fad diet, but its actually backed by a lot of science and studies to be really good for you and basically destroys the 6 meals a day myth.
I never eat breakfast and usually go about 16 hours minimum each day before I have my first meal(this includes 8 hrs of sleep the previous night). So each day I'll have 2 meals max, most likely one small meal and one big meal at night. So this way of eating should cut my food expense a lot and I think an average of $10 a day is accurate. I'll also have to do some food shopping, which I have never done in my life, but I think it will be a must as you can save a lot at the grocery store instead of always buying out, obviosuly
If you did it right, the corners would be square, the covers pulled tight, the pillow centered just under the headboard and the extra blanket folded neatly at the foot of the rack—rack—that's Navy talk for bed.
It was a simple task—mundane at best. But every morning we were required to make our bed to perfection. It seemed a little ridiculous at the time, particularly in light of the fact that were aspiring to be real warriors, tough battle hardened SEALs—but the wisdom of this simple act has been proven to me many times over.
If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.
By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter.
If you can't do the little things right, you will never do the big things right.
And, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made—that you made—and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.
If you want to change your world, start by making your bed.

Don't remind me of this horror.
I'm sure you're already aware of getting a chip inventory (so remember a good chunk of funds will be tied up in small chips that are easy to lose). Having a rotation where you have all the chips on that rotation you need for the day ready to go will save you time and sanity of sorting through them all. IF/When you ever do buy in for cash think about short buying with small bills and the message that sends to the pit.
Have a back story. Especially if a pit ever remembers you and starts a convo with you... You don't want to tell them you're in on vacation, ever, because they could see you again and know you're lying. You "just moved out to vegas" for "some other job" is probably a good idea. Make the "some other job" something you're semi-knowledgeable in, so you can hold a conversation on it if needed.
I don't think you plan on doing this, and perhaps you learned a good lesson before you went out, but do NOT argue or try to show ANYONE in a casino (pit, security, dealers, ploppies) that you know more than them about the game, your rights, etc, etc, etc. Nothing good can come from this and it will destroy your longevity.
Lastly, but most importantly... keep your eyes out for better opportunities. When you find a few of them, find someone that knows what to do with them and trade some EV for some training at that point. The EV from other plays from a weekend could be worth your EV for months in BJ.
Good luck.

Romes comes through again with great insights!
I'm sorry for my lack of experience and/or ignorance, but can you expand on buying short buying with small bills? I know buying in at the table for $100 rather than $300 or $500 will not warrant much interest from the pit. Is that the main intent and the end game? How do you incorporate the chips you brought into play? For example, if you brought 8 green chips at a particular casino, and bought in for $200 cash, how can you incorporate the 8 green chips? After a session, isn't it worse to make the Casino think you've won (with 8 extra green chips on the table) than even though you may be even? Do you slowly remove the green chips one by one towards the end?

Short buy-in -- buy in for smaller amounts, like $100 or $200, preferably in $20's and $5's.
Once you do have chips, for a later session, bring chips. Bring as many chips as you want. Not $200. More like $1k to $3k, depending on your max bet.
Quote: RomesI might be late to the party, but congrats on finally making the move. Regardless of how it works out, getting out and making the try is half the battle. As others have said, if you stay disciplined you'll be fine... it's when you get sloppy, distracted, or greedy that you'll end up hurting yourself. Thinking "Oh, I wanna get another couple hours in today, so I'll stretch my sessions past 45 min, or I'll play this place I played just a couple days ago, or heck I'll play this same shift I haven't had any heat there yet" is what will lead to downfalls of longevity.

Thanks again Romes. I sure learned a lot playing in PA and I'm glad I got some much needed experience playing here before I move out there. If I say even half of the stupid stuff in Vegas as I've said in PA to the pit and dealers, I'll be back home within 3 months so I need to keep my ego and pride at the door or I'll be done.
But like I said before, most of the 'I know my rights' type of stuff I said was more to protect me from being taken advantage of illegally and had nothing to do with my ego, but I quickly learned there's no reason to say any of that as it just makes me memorable and that's completely counterproductive to what a counter should strive for especially in Vegas when I'll be playing short sessions and trying to play under the radar.
I hear there's full pay deuces all around =P... lol.Quote: AxelWolfI highly suggest you look into some VP and other things. Much less risk and better comps than Blackjack. If you wanted to feed yourself for free and have +EV I would think that's the way to go.
In all seriousness though you should learn how to play JoB, Deuces, and DB at least fairly well as this will be the best way to run out free play, for the most part. Also good to show "machine" action at times for very little -EV (though I don't know that professionally you'd want to do this or not).

I'm not sure how well they comp people on the lower denomination FPDW at various locations anymore. I don't think I can even remember the last time I actually played a low denomination FPDW. It's well-known Skyline has .50(10 coin .25) and various promos, but no card(they been saying soon for years now). I think they comp you via the visual method. I have yet to eat once in that place.
Come to think about it, playing lower denomination VP for comps may not be worthwhile for him.
I'm not sure how much the OP is claiming he's going to be making per hour playing BJ, but if it's as much as he has indicated in the past, he's better off just paying for the food and getting back to business ASAP.
I have no doubt he would start questioning the randomness of VP and then demand to see the stats on the machines he's playing.

Damn casinos cheat players everywhere, not just in PA, as he (and we) are about to find out. And somewhere a young (assuming 18+ YO boy at a bus station) man is going to find out....unless of course he follows the advice of one of the few people beating BJ in LV. And if he doesn't, there is always the mission where "volunteers" will provide a free meal, BJ expertise and more...for a (assuming small) price.

As to change the world by making your bed, there is much to be admired in that attitude, though it surely does not always work.
The Shakers motto was 'Hands to work, hearts to God' and that was the sequence.
I've posted about Dylan Thomas: When depressed, he made lemon marmalade because being careful with the knife and cleaning up right away to avoid an ant infestation was his equivalent of forcing himself to make his bed. Physical activity even in a mundane chore is far better than sitting there getting more depressed. Its often difficult though and I'm sure if I were Dylan Thomas, my hut would have been full of ants and rotting lemon peels.
As to diet for those "on their uppers" there is quite a difference between being twenty and being a good bit older.
Intermittent fasting does work. Best appears to be two days a week of at most 500 calories, the rest of the week a normal diet. Weight loss will take place, triglycerides improves, insulin resistance decreases slightly.
Gorging once a day is not wise. Overloads the liver and kidney, particularly since salt and carbohydrate intake will be high. Watch particularly your fructose intake. Eating an apple is best, eating applesauce is harder on the organs and drinking apple juice is the worst for you. All those pizzas and mac'ncheese are not good for you. Nor are Ramen 'noodles'.
Its better to eat well and exercise regularly... even if it puts a dent in your bankroll. You will gamble better when your stomach is not growling.
I have a California King bed so just lifting the mattress to tuck in sheets is a bit of a workout.
I don't make my bed everyday, nor have I changed the world, except for that of my rescue pup.
With that said, a man who rises at 4AM and makes his bed before doing his roadwork is a man that will be there when things go bad.
Anyone remember Big John Tate? Olympic boxer and was going to be the next big thing.
He decided he could do his roadwork at 8AM instead of 430. He figured five miles at one time was a s good as 5 miles at another.
What he didn't get is that rising at 4AM is half the battle. He went from being the next Joe Frazier to being an afterthought because he lacked discipline.
Somewhere, there is a point to this.

Yes I'm still going, but I might be flying instead. I'm worried about the corrupt cops waiting to steal my bankroll on the side of the road and it would be much easier flying with a bankroll and getting throigh TSA.
I did find a recent 2014 supreme court ruling though, that cops can't make you wait longer than it takes to write the traffic ticket. Meaning if you deny them to search your car and then they say were bringing the dogs, that would be illegal. Even with that said, if the cops are corrupt enough they won't even care. I guess I could try and scare them saying I'm recording this unlawful detainment and I will sue them under title 18 section 241/242.
Of course the partial bankroll im bringing would be in my shoes anyway, so searching the car woulent matter, but I rather not risk it and having them take me to police station and make me take my shoes off.
The Supreme court ruling is Rodriguez vs US.
Foiled again. On to Plan Foxtrot.
Still haven't learned anything about confrontations? If you do this, it would give them all the more reason to be dicks and to assume you have or are doing something illegal. A simple "Am I free to go?" over and over will suffice. As soon as they say you are, you simply say good day and put it in drive and leave.Quote: ZenKingI guess I could try and scare them saying I'm recording this unlawful detainment and I will sue them under title 18 section 241/242.
Escalating the situation by showing you "know what you're talking about" rarely gets you anything in life, AP or not.
Yes, you're in the right. Yes, it would be an illegal seizure of your money. Yes, you could get it back... YES YOU WOULD LOSE YOUR BANKROLL FOR A YEAR OR TWO AND THEN LOSE 30%-40% OF IT IN LAWYER FEES TO GET IT BACK IF YOU DO PROVOKE THEM TO "ILLEGALLY" TAKE IT.

Yea its similar to the stuff I said to the pit bosses. Its just a shame that's how it works in this world. All I'm doing is asserting my rights and because of that I get penalized for it. Why can't the cops just do their fu**in job and obey their oath to the constitution? Instead of interrogating people with lies just to fork over money to their municipality etc.
Civil asset forfeiture has to be one of the biggest destructions of freedom we have ever seen. And to make it worse these cops get a cut out of the money they seize so they have an incentive to interrogate and lie. What king of garbage is that? Absolutely sickening watching this country go in the gutter. I can't even enjoy a trip cross country because I'm worried they will take my bankroll without even convicting me of a crime? How pathetic is that? Seriously why does anyone even celebrate July 4th anymore. Disgusted to be an American.
Yea you're right I probably should just keep asking "Am I being detained" and "Am I free to go" and "I'm not answering any questions" and that should suffice. Usually they wait until after giving you the ticket yo ask if there's money in the car. That's when I'll say what I have to say about not answering any more questions. I was really looking forward to just enjoying a road trip and because of this corrupt country I have to constantly be looking over my shoulder in fear when I'm not even a criminal or involved in any drugs etc
