Blackjack tournament scenario

Played in a blackjack tournament today. Comes down to the final hand with these chip stacks:
Seat 1: $4000
Hero: $8900
Seat 3: $4500
Seat 4: $1000
Seat 5: $2000
Seat 6: $9600

Seat 6 is first base.

Seat 6: $800
Seat 1: $4000
Hero: Action is on hero
Seats 3, 4 and 5: Yet to wager

Blackjacks pay 2:1, min $100, max $5000, and the payouts are $1500 to 1st, $930 to 2nd, $525 to 3rd, $300 to 4th. Ties result in a playoff.

What do you wager in Hero's position?

always try for 1st place.

and even if you try to stay conservative and bet 100 to guarantee a 2nd, they guy in seat 3 will probably go all in. you would then need a win to tie him. So might as well bet 1600.

I play to at least win money. I bet 100 which guarantees me 3rd and could end up in 1st.

I guess it does not guarantee 3rd since a BJ on seat 1 passes you.

Eta: I would have definitely min bet. I will take me chances against a BJ in seat 1 over losing the hand.

I was in a similar situation on our cruise in April. There were 3 left and I was ahead in chips. I bet the perfect amount to make me win by 100 chips. The reaction of the other players was priceless, they thought it was a miracle that it happened. Even the other player thought he had it won because he got a BJ.
