OK so the wizard says that this machine lowers the house edge
Stanford Wong says to avoid it at all costs
So if I'm playing basic strategy and no counting then do I want to play at a CSM or no?

Stanford's focus is card-counting, and CSMs make card counting impossible.
If you are a basic strategy player, it doesn't matter much. The house edge will be slightly lower as per the Wizard's work, but you will play more hands per hour because they never have to shuffle. You can combat this by sitting out a couple of hands every half hour or hour if you really feel like it. Not a bad idea at ANY -EV game, to be honest :)

Actually both answers are correct. It does slightly lower the house edge but they should also be avoided because of the house edge. In general don't play them.

It's the card counters who have spread the word that CSMs are to be avoided. When the first machines came upon the scene it was thought that counting was doomed. It didn't happen but that thinking still prevails today. Players often can be heard saying they would never play the "machines" lumping ASMs and CSMS together and not understanding the difference.
Players want the lower limits that are often found on these machines and are ignorant of the poorer rules or willing to ignore them. If the same rules can be found on CSMs and hand shuffled games and the number of decks are the same, the non counter can certainly play "the machines". Just get the hands per hour down by employing the usual wonging techniques and you should be good to go.
