So there was a gentleman who was doubling down on hard 12s a few times last night, which got me thinking. A lot of slot players and carnival game players don't play BJ because it doesn't have the "jackpot" feeling. 3-to-2 pay on BJ just isn't enough for them.
What would be the house edge if:
winning a doubling down on hard 12 paid 2-to1?
or winning a doubling down on hard 16 against a 10 or an ace paid, say, 5-to-1?

I think the side bets for BJ are attempting to fill the role you are referencing.......new ones include House Money, Shortie & Lucky Stiff. All of these (and I sure there are others) are attempting to fill the higher hit rate/lower payout space.
Payouts range from even money, 5 to 1, 10 to 1 and highest pay out on House Money is essentially 24-1 on a AK Suited with an initial 9-1 pay out plus the likely 3:2 payout on top of that for a BJ.
