I was at my local casino last night. They gave me a piece of paper for a $10 matchplay. I placed two red chips and the $10 matchplay for $20. I won the hand, and the dealer paid me $20, but didn't convert the match play into chips. So, in total, I wagered $10+$10(matchplay), and came out with $30 total. I would have thought it should be $40 total, but I was assured by the dealer and the player next to me (another local) that that's how it works.
I didn't want to make a scene since they consider me a local and it was only $10, but is this how matchplays on BJ tables usually work?

You got ten for your original wager plus ten for the match play This is correct.

So the expected value of a matchplay is more like less than $5.... Interesting. Thanks!

Some places--- very few actually--- will let you bet it on roulette or side-bets, etc. The value of the match play is considerably higher on bets that pay more than 1 to 1, due to the lost value in surrendering the match play.
My local place lets me turn match plays into freeplay. Much betters.
