My wife and I just came back from a weekend in Vegas, where we saw the Million Dollar Quartet show at Harrah's (a GREAT show -- very highly recommended). We decided to play some BJ to kill time before the show started and were shocked to see shoe games with a 5-4 blackjack payoff. Fortunately, we were able to find a regular 3-2 table. I don't know which shocked me more -- that Harrah's offered such a ripoff game or that so many people were playing it.

I am not shocked. Just like in 6 to 5, it's the 5 that is attractive to low limit bettors. Even money will soon follow. Even money still returns over 97% !
Shed not for her
the bitter tear
Nor give the heart
to vain regret
Tis but the casket
that lies here,
The gem that filled it
Sparkles yet

How does a 5:4 payout work? Is it also a $4 table? are there quarters or $.25 chips available? It seems like that adds more time than it's worth. It's also more than 6:5, which makes it a slight improvement in payout, but with an increase in time per hand as well.

That sounds like a slow game. Quick, how much for a $25 blackjack? How about $27.50?

It's more trouble to figure than 3:2 or 1:1, but it's not that outrageous. Well, yes, the "short" payout is outrageous, but the calculation is not. Just pay it even money plus $1 for each $4 bet or $1.25 for each $5 bet. And no, $27.50 is not even close.

No, no I meant what would a $27.50 blackjack pay. It would depend if they rounded up.

Oh. What casinos take bets of $27.50? Why not ask the payout on a $42.63 bet that comes up with a blackjack?

Most casinos will allow a pink chip to be bet. My point was that it would very confusing for the dealers which translates to less hands per hour and ultimately diminished wins.

Regular 3:2 table have $2.50 pink chips. So those tables will take a $27.50 bet. BJ would pay 41.25 rounded UP to 41.50.
Most likely, a 5:4 table wouldn't allow players to bet with pink chips.
