i have no idea, i've never come across something like that before, but the only thing i can think of is something to do with discouraging card counting.

But a card counter would love to be forced to increase his bet when count is positive, but pit bosses know so little about counting it's possible.

That's a fairly common rule at Indiana riverboats where you have to bet double the table minimum if you want to play two hands. The only thing I can think of is that if 2-3 players spread out and played all the spots at table minimum, it would keep gamblers who were willing to bet more from sitting down.

Yes, and a counter would hate to have to bet more on a negative count, or before they had chance to establish the count, which is more what i was getting at.
But the answer above mine makes more sense.

Chair space at the tables is limited, so its probably just to keep space available for other players, some of whom might well be higher bettors anyway.
It might also be that if you think you are hot stuff to play two hands at a time perhaps you are so good that you will be counting cards too and they will throw a stumbling block at your testing the waters with low bets until you establish a count.
I would guess its more a space utilization ploy to keep some players from hogging the spaces at minimum bet levels.

Very common rule, but not always enforced if the table has empty seats.

If I'm on a hot streak, and the person on either side of me leaves, I'll play their spot a few hands, "to see how they would have done."

I've only run into that rule once.

If I every run into it again, I'll ask, and I might even say "I'm not taking advantage of a count. I don't count. I'm just a standard progression presser, on a streak," etc...

Yeah, that'll work...

Now that I think of it, I think the one time I got hit with that rule was at a Pai Gow table.

I think it's purely to do with seating and making a player play with more money to take up two seats.

Doubling the table minimum in order to play two hands is the rule in the Mississippi casinos too.

To get around it just have someone else sit down (your spouse or a friend), put your money up on their spot, and let them make the hand signal. That way, technically, two people are playing two spots and nobody can force you to increase either bet.

My husband was playing 3-card poker one night, really late, and there was just one other guy at the table. This other guy wanted to play two hands but didn't want to have to double his bet so when I wandered over to watch he asked me to join them so he could play another hand. He offered to split all winnings with me so I said what the hell and sat down.

On about the fourth hand I got trips, and with $10 up this guy split $300 with me, just like he promised he would. We were all joking, saying he should let his $150 ride on the Pair Plus, but he thought better of it and just played $10 again. Unbelieveably I got dealt another trips.

I ended up making 300 bucks without risking a dime of my own money, and we were all happy.

I had alwaysb been playing at a table with no more than 1 or 2 other players when I wanted to play 2 hands. Just seems asanine as I just continue playing 1 hand at the minimum bet. Also 9 out of 10 times when other players have that choice they do likewise when told they have to double bets on each hand. Just seems like a losing proposition for the house and the player.
I do it to reduce volitality,
Plus I can not find any rules at casino or gaming that says I have to double the table minimum.
Going to challenge pit bosses on my next trip to Blackhawk and call gaming if need be.
Colorado gaming so anal casino had to attach with velcro a discard tray for Digital 21 until rules could be changed LOL
PS Anybody ever seen the requirement in print or online anywhere ?????

Personally, I agree with this rule when things are busy. Taking up 2 spots when the table is full and thus turning people away is selfish. I think it should be more like 3x the minimum when the tables are busy. A person betting at this level can have some more freedom because of their bet level, but not someone who wants to take up multiple spots betting the minimum. This person should double their bet if they want more action, or be willing to substantially increase their bet if they want to 'buy' an in-demand spot.

On busy times I have even seen a palyer playing 2 spots asked to back down to one and I agree.
I am talking about tables with me and only 1 or 2 other players, been like thta for hours and likely to remain so. I want to ploay 2 hands to lessen volatility and entertainment.
Plus I do not kno9w of any printed house rules or gaming oversight that gives the casino a legal righyt to do so!! Does anyone else know of either ???

Let us get something straight, you do not have a right to play blackjack. They are allowing you to be in their establishment and can kick you out whenever they want for any reason. On that note, this has happened to me and it is annoying, but excessive complaining like a previous post mentioned is just a horrible idea.

It all depends on whether the pit boss wants to throw their weight around. There is no set "rule" or statute about it other than it is the casino's policy. I've played two hands at places with no problem; at other places they have given me flack. I think it tends to piss off more players than it helps. It's the same deal as raising minimums mid-game and not grandfathering in the previous players at the lower limit. Casinos seem split on this.

The best thing you can do to voice your disapproval is to leave. Vote with your feet. If you continue playing, or worse, play the double they require, they will just think of you as another degenerate they can push around. (No offense to you). Aren't there something like 25 casinos in the BH/CC area anyway? Have you tried the others?

Like others have said, I imagine if you are playing two hands and basically taking up another seat, and others players are walking away because the space is taken, that's one less person the casino can get money from and like someone else said they might bet a lot more than you, per hand.

A counter would never increase his/her bet unless they knew they had the advantage and then would be happy to. In fact, going to two hands allows you to increase overall bet and maintain a lower variance than a single hand player.
