I just started gambling last month after a particularly odd situation lead me to learn about blackjack (my primary interest at the moment) and other games.
I have read a little bit about video poker and although I'm no expert, I have a general understanding of it and play for entertainment occasionally. On this particular occasion however, one of my first times playing, I got very lucky. I was at a local bar to watch a band I like and decided while I was there that I would put $10 into the VP machine and see what I could do. I had a few friends with me, and I was regularly changing the number of credits I was betting for no real reason.I was up $2.50 playing Deuces Wild and betting 3 credits. Before I drew the next hand I asked a friend what he though I should bet, to which he responded 8 (max credits). I hit the max bet button and what would you know, four deuces!
Here's the screen after I cashed out:
I was unsure what happened at first, as the screen flashed game over, but when I glanced at the pay table and then my credits, we began to celebrate. It was my first "big" win, and it came right on the tail end of a $450 BJ losing streak. I obviously cashed out and stopped playing for the night, but it was a great experience for one of my first times playing. I don't believe that the pay table is that great from what I've read, but that wasn't a huge concern at the moment, as I was playing for recreation and not looking to maximize my monetary gains.
Anyways, that's pretty much it. I know this is a small amount in comparison to what some other members would consider a big win, but it's big to me so I decided to post it. I plan on contributing to this forum as much as I can, and learning a whole lot more than I already have. Thanks for all of the great information that gets posted here daily.
P.S.- Sorry if the image is too large or improperly embedded within my post, I don't post on forums very often so I did what I could according to the formatting codes presented when you create a new post. If what I've done is incorrect or there are preferable alternatives, please let me know.
P.P.S.- After I won, I gave the friend that suggested I make the max bet 10% of my win. What is the etiquette for this situation? Did I overdo it with my gratuity? Any thoughts are welcome.

Since you said this was a friend, I don't think there is any set etiquette, at least as far as I'm concerned. If you feel like giving a friend more than someone you are tipping, I don't see a big deal.
Maybe you felt later that it was too much --but since you already gave it out, I would just let it go.
Of course, you could just not pay anything or buy drinks instead, or dinner.
Was your previous game of choice to learn Baccarat? I think there's a 50/50 chance it was. Actually pethaps there's a lower chance, but I have just a small feeling it was a game you may have been interested. in.Quote: IceManHello everyone, I've decided to join the forum after lurking for a while and decided this would be an alright post to start off with.

Yes that's a very horrible paytable. I would have to take a shower after playing that. I would feel better about playing live keno. Anyways thats just my 79 cents worth.
I think what you did was awesome buddy. Don't let the pros scoff.

Funny axel, I concur.
Fwiw, I wouldn't have given a friend anything but I would have picked up drinks for the night.
But like others have said, picking up a round or two seems more appropriate since he did convince you to bet max and immediately hit. But you aren't obligated to give anything. However, bettng max is terrible advice for Illinois bar video poker, imo. Because of the $500 max win rule, the percentage return of the game is not much higher when you bet 5 quarters, or betting max. And in non-wild games, strategy is more difficult when betting max because they'll often pay $500 for any straight flush. So you should only bet what you feel comfortable with.
For the game you have pictured and a 400 hand per hour pace:
Betting 1 quarter/hand: 94.76%...$5.24/hr expected loss
Betting 5 quarters/hand: 95.08%...$24.61/hr expected loss
Betting 8 quarters/hand: 95.74%... $34/hr expected loss
When these first came out in Illinois, they offered a fairly generous 7/5 Super Aces paytable (97.61% 1-4 coins; 97.92% 5 coins) on IGT machines. But after about 6 months or so, that game disappeared. Now the best game available is 6/5 Super Double Double Bonus (96.47% 1-4 coins; 96.78% 5 coins; 96.89% 8 coins).
And here's is what that paytable looks like and pictured is my biggest hit playing these. Not bad for less than 2 hours lifetime.
The casino should go broke paying someone minimum wage to wipe the dust off these machines.

I don't play these very often. I don't live by these, but they are swamped in the chicago suburbs where my g/f's parents live. And it's always the same slot/VP games too. Pretty boring really. They really should switch up/add to the slot lineup since they are multigame machines.
In June they returned 91.96% statewide. The 20,730 machines had a gross revenue of $72,832,140.38 for the month ($3513.37 per machine).
vs. June 2014 they returned 92.04% statewide. The 17,467 machines had a gross revenue of $50,772,323.36 for the month ($2906.76 per machine).
Believe it or not, June 2015 riverboat revenue is almost $1M higher than 2014 too.

Therein lies the problem.Quote: AhighBut yeah, lucky players are not treated the same as players eke'ing out a 1% or smaller edge using AP.
You can give a friend whatever you want to. A friend is a friend.
While you want to play the best games and make the best bets don't let the math guys get you down - you got a wnner, bad bet and all.

And you resurrected a nearly 2 month old thread to tell us this?

Welcome to the forum and congrats! I would never give a friend actual money due to me getting lucky gambling, but I certainly have bought dinner after I had a win and he had a loss. My friends and I know that any particular winning session is really illusionary, they are all just part of a lifelong session..... but the 'celebratory' treating of the friend feels right so we all do it to and for each other.....
