At roulette if I make 5 4corner bets this gives me 20 chances out of 38 to win and pays 8 to 5 total. (better than the 1 to 1 that red/black etc. pay) Would this not give me an edge over the house??

You're forgetting that when 1 of your corner bets hit, you still lose the other 4. So you lose 5 units when they miss, but only win 4 units when 1 hits. It really pays 4 to 5, not 8 to 5.

Isn't it 9/5? the 4 corners bets should pay 1/4 of what 1 inside number pays (36). So, 20/38ths of the time, you make 9:5. 18/38ths of the time, you make 0. (20/38)*(9/5)=180/190=18/19=.947368. 1-.947368=5.263%, which is the house edge in American roulette. So, no, this bet is no better than any other bet in roulette.

Combinations of bets with the same house edge have... the same house edge.

And except for the rather absurd bet on 0, 00, 1, 2, 3, ALL bets in roulette have a 5.26 house edge (considering the usual wheels and usual rules encountered in general casino floors).
