Just a few quick questions for people who spend a lot of time in casinos but don't smoke.

1. Does the smoke still bother you at this point or are you used to it?

2. Have you ever got so sick from the smoke you needed to leave the casino for a bit or go to another section of the casino?

3. Do you have clothes you wear only to the casino and clothes you wear only to other places?

4. Have you ever been asked by a doctor if you smoke or had an adverse medical test showing signs of smoking?

5. Are smokers usually courteous to you or does it get to be a problem with smoke in your face?

6. Do you take any steps to protect yourself from smoke like personal fans, masks etc or is it not that bad?

7. On a scale of 0 to 10 how much does smoke impact your casino experience?

8. In your opinion what are the best and worst casinos for non smokers?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and for any answers given.

Smoke doesn't usually bother me. sometimes it's too close or too strong, but the general conditions don't cause me any discomfort.

The only time I needed to leave was right after I had my tonsils removed. My throat did not like my casino visit at all. I've moved many times if there's a bad air current or something.

I do have clothes that I pretty much only wear to casinos - or when I travel, which is usually also centered around visiting casinos.

yes, I get asked all the time if I smoke. Turns out I'm just incredibly out of shape.

Most are courteous. Some aren't. And some of the time, I think they just don't notice the odd air current from their ashtray to my nose 20 feet away.

I've never found the smoke to be so pervasive that a solution more extreme than relocation was needed.

3.

Best - CO and IL are smoke free (except for the 2 Tribal casinos in CO). Revel isn't that bad even now that smoking is allowed. Wynn is great, so is Bellagio.
Worst - The casinos in downtown Henderson have low ceilings and lots of smokers.

This is more than a few. Next time, I'd suggest numbering them.

It still bothers me.

Quote: Perdition

Have you ever got so sick from the smoke you needed to leave the casino for a bit or go to another section of the casino?

Yes. If a smoker sits down next to me I'll have to leave while he is smoking.

Quote: Perdition

Do you have clothes you wear only to the casino and clothes you wear only to other places?

No.

Have you ever been asked by a doctor if you smoke or had an adverse medical test showing signs of smoking?

No.

I'd say 3 out 4 make some effort to be courteous.

Quote: Perdition

Do you take any steps to protect yourself from smoke like personal fans, masks etc or is it not that bad?

No.

Quote: Perdition

On a scale of 1 to 10 how much does smoke impact your casino experience?

It should be a 0 to 10 scale, and my answer is a 5.

Quote: Perdition

Generally speaking, the older the casino, the worse it is. The newer ones have better air circulation systems.

Did you make the adjustment for the 0-10 scale? On a compressed 1-10 scale, with 1 meaning "no impact", is your answer 5.5? :-)

I'm ok with a little smoke. The worst casino smoke wise in Vegas I have gone to is Ellis Island. This is too bad because I enjoy thier video poker, steak special, BBQ, and homemade root beer. The restaurant area isn't as bad as the casino floor.

I think I'm about 50/50 of other players ask if it's ok to smoke next to me there.

My wife has very light asthma, but there is no way I'm taking her there during our next visit.

Definitely the lower the ceilings the worst it is.

Smokers don't bother me. It's the mess they leave behind. Cigarettes in an ashtray with a soda poured over to put in out. Ashes all over the place. Crumpled cigarette packs on the floor. And it seems VP players are the worst. Leaving a mess across and entire bank.

1. All smoke bothers me, but being around smokers is nothing new.

2. No.

3. As soon as I get home the clothes go into the wash.

4. No.

5. Most smokers are courteous, and I think the number of smokers has decreased.

6. I was not permitted to go into casinos for six months after my kidney/pancreas transplant. I take no other action but if there is a non smoking area I will play there.

7. It's a non issue. i just deal with it.

8. Pechanga in Southern Cal is the absolute worst. Caesars in Vegas does not have good ventilation so it can be bad. I found that Mandalay Bay in Vegas was pretty good because of its high ceilings. Bellagio has some non smoking craps tables.

1. It bothers me.

2. Generally no, but if it's bad enough, I will occasionally move.

3. No, but I probably should. My clothes almost always stink when leaving a casino.

4. A doctor, what's that? I am way overdue... But no, they have never thought I was a smoker.

5. Most at least try not to let it float in my face. Lately, more people have started to ask my permission to smoke first. I really like that!

6. No.

7. 4/10

8. Best: all Illinois casinos. I assume Ohio fits in as well or any other state that mandates completely non-smoking casinos.
Worst: Any casino with poor ventilation, usually older casinos. Riverboat casinos that are still truly riverboats (i.e. with multilevel decks) are particularly bad.

I'm at the point in my life now where it takes
more than both hands to count all the people
I've known who have died from smoking. If
they were hitting themselves in the head with
a hammer, we'd beg them to stop. They smoke,
so we just assume they're partially insane and
let them keep doing it. History will look back on
this period saying we were all insane for allowing
it to continue.

People are generally just no damn good. The same trashy smokers if they couldn't toss their butts would find food or gum wrappers to leave laying around. Maybe just empty drink glasses or empty water bottles, when the slobs are done with it they are done, the mess then belongs to someone else, not their job to clean up after themselves. Their homes, cars and life are probably a close proximity to their smoking mess. Their minds are probably trashy as well.

I smoke occasionally, never inside, almost never toss a butt. But I will not tolerate someone else's smoke in my face. That being said, at least a cigarette will go out after a few minutes. But those stinkin ass cigars, I hate em. There are probably fewer people that enjoy second hand cigar smoke than their are actual dice controllers. I don't care if someone is smoking weed, an occasional cigarette, or their buddy's sausage but those cigars stink. It's like they saw some Vegas movie and having that big brown one between their lips makes them look like a high roller or something.

One more thought here. The casino floor is a place made for degenerate behavior. I didn't realize people went there for their health.

I am not a smoker, except when I'm in Vegas. I am lucky in that I don't get addicted to the nicotine, and can stop whenever. When I traveled through Europe for 7 weeks I smoked for the majority of the trip, and gave it up about a week after I got home.

So anyway, I try to be courteous when I'm in a casino. I've never had anyone ask me to stop smoking, courteous or otherwise. If someone did, I would probably stop, or just move so they weren't next to me.

1. Does the smoke still bother you at this point or are you used to it?

Yes, it bothers me, but circumstances dictate my reaction. If I choose to play at a smoking table, or a machine in a smoking section, I got no beef. If I'm next to a smoker, they almost always try to direst their smoke away, and I appreciate that.

2. Have you ever got so sick from the smoke you needed to leave the casino for a bit or go to another section of the casino?

No,

3. Do you have clothes you wear only to the casino and clothes you wear only to other places?

No.

4. Have you ever been asked by a doctor if you smoke or had an adverse medical test showing signs of smoking?

No, not like you mean.

5. Are smokers usually courteous to you or does it get to be a problem with smoke in your face?

They are invariably courteous, because I am courteous to them.

6. Do you take any steps to protect yourself from smoke like personal fans, masks etc or is it not that bad?

No, if it gets too bad I just wish everyone good luck and cash out.

7. On a scale of 0 to 10 how much does smoke impact your casino experience?

3? 2? The only time I get pissed is when someone lights up in the non smoking section. I'm 6'2", 300lbs, and not shy about sharing my feelings.

8. In your opinion what are the best and worst casinos for non smokers?

Best I've experienced would be Rivers in Chicago. Worst that I've known is Horseshoe Hammond, 100% smoking and poor air circulation.

Got a couple of "bonus questions" if anyone would like to answer.

Have you ever been purposely "smoked out" by someone in order for them to get the machine you are playing on?

Do you think casinos in Las Vegas will ever be smoke free or have the majority of the playing area as non-smoking? If so what year do you think it would happen in?

Believe me, marijuana smokers do not dispose of joint butts on the ground. Especially the high end expensive stuff.
Its like throwing money away. The THC in the butt has built up. The shorter the joint gets, it gets slightly more potent.
In fact, with the high end stuff, a real waste to roll into a joint. 1 or 2 hits, and I'm good for hours.
If there is a shared joint, its typically smoked down to nothing with a roach clip.
Marijuana smokers don't like to waste anything, the high end stuff is way too expensive.
I typically do my business in the hotel room then go down to gamble. If it was legal, probably stick to the same routine, don't want to pass 2nd hand smoke to a nonsmoker.

That's because it isn't legal everywhere. Just wait until it is. You'll see.

BTW, I totally believe you & respect you for saying that you wouldn't want to annoy others with your second-hand marijuana smoke, but believe me, there are many, many stoners who don't give a sh*t.

I almost never roll joints, a pipe is the way to go. No waste at all. Get one of the portable ones that closes up, and there's literally no downside over a joint.

I don't think so. I've left machines lots of times because a smoker sat next to me, but I don't think their motive was to get my machine.

California laws requires smokers keep a distance from places where people work, live or consuming the meal. Thank you. Hate smell of smoke. Yes, I try to avoid smoke smelling casinos, but smokers are a big chunk of casinos' income, so there is not much choice we have, which is very unfortunate .

Never going to unless somebody stands up and stops all of the politicians from being paid their millions from the tobacco companies.

I think it would be the casinos that would keep that from happening. Much like the bar owners somehow managed to overturn the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act.

Smokers will smoke either way, so the tobacco companies I don't think would get involved in that fight.

1. Does the smoke still bother you at this point or are you used to it?
It will always still bother me; I will never get used to it.
2. Have you ever got so sick from the smoke you needed to leave the casino for a bit or go to another section of the casino?
No, not for sickness reasons but for irritation reasons. I do like to sample the non-smoking area but that is usually very small.
3. Do you have clothes you wear only to the casino and clothes you wear only to other places?
No. but I used to go to an Irish bar and would have to ride my motorcycle in the same clothes before depositing them in the hamper.
4. Have you ever been asked by a doctor if you smoke or had an adverse medical test showing signs of smoking?
Oh, heck they always ask that so they can blame their mistakes on you.
5. Are smokers usually courteous to you or does it get to be a problem with smoke in your face?
I've had a few smokers in my face... had a few in the back alley too.
6. Do you take any steps to protect yourself from smoke like personal fans, masks etc or is it not that bad?
No, its not worth making a big deal about it.
7. On a scale of 0 to 10 how much does smoke impact your casino experience?
3. Only because I never let anything get beyond 3 in impacting my life.
8. In your opinion what are the best and worst casinos for non smokers?
Best: SamsTown, Vegas. Worst: Any casino that a non-smoker chooses to fixate on and ruin his own enjoyment of.

That didn't work here in Michigan. You cannot smoke at any place of employment "except" casinos. Only they "paid" enough to be exempt.

I think that's the case in some other midwest states too. Iowa and Kansas for example. It would definitely take a federal law to change Nevada. Illinois casinos have consistently complained about losing business to Indiana when they banned smoking in casinos.

And to answer Perdition's other question, I don't think anyone has intentionally smoked next to me to make me move. I would like a story from anyone who thinks it's happened to them. And anyone who would dare do this deserves a punch in the face, imo.

I don't think I've had smoke deliberately blown in my face although it's not always easy to tell. I shrug off most comments and insults directed at me from other players but I assure you that intentionally blowing smoke in my face would be nipped in the bud. For some reason smokers think that they can play at a non smoking table and stand up during the shuffle to smoke without stepping back. What do they think the sign is for?

I have seen a few slobs deliberately blow smoke in the dealer's face for whatever reason. It just shows what kind of person they are.

Never going to [happen] unless somebody stands up...

Non-smoking rules first drifted near here via [southern] Ireland and now it's illegal to smoke inside Casinos in the UK. Most have built a bus-like shelter, or balcony so players can have their smokes outside and remain warm. One casino in Dublin apparently even ran BBQs in the summer.
The biggest effect has been on Bingo halls, some have closed to lack of customers or just because they go outside and don't stay inside playing the money-making games; there's also been some impact on pubs - but most people now accept the rules.

Just a few quick questions for people who spend a lot of time in casinos but don't smoke.

Late reply here. I try to avoid casinos, but I've probably averaged 4 hours per week for more than a decade.

1. Does the smoke still bother you at this point or are you used to it?
It only gets worse. If it's not bothering you now, enjoy while your tolerance lasts.

2. Have you ever got so sick from the smoke you needed to leave the casino for a bit or go to another section of the casino?
Maybe. Generally I'll quit before reaching that point.

3. Do you have clothes you wear only to the casino and clothes you wear only to other places?
LOL, definitely. I'll change clothes in the car if I'm going directly from a casino to civilization.

4. Have you ever been asked by a doctor if you smoke or had an adverse medical test showing signs of smoking?
No, but I'm not a casino regular.

5. Are smokers usually courteous to you or does it get to be a problem with smoke in your face?
It varies a lot, but if a smoker sits directly next to me, it's likely to be a problem regardless.

6. Do you take any steps to protect yourself from smoke like personal fans, masks etc or is it not that bad?
It certainly is that bad, but I don't know of any effective protection short of a gas mask. (I'm gonna ask about masks in my "tobacco talk" thread.)

7. On a scale of 0 to 10 how much does smoke impact your casino experience?
I don't know, 8? It's impossible to avoid because the patrons are constantly walking around while smoking. By the way, it should be a 1 to 10 scale. (I'm kidding.)

8. In your opinion what are the best and worst casinos for non smokers?
In the Vegas area, Arizona Charlie's Decatur is easily the best, but only in the smoke-free room. As for worst ... all of them. But adjusted for degree of difficulty, I think probably the worst of the worst is Silver Sevens (formerly Terrible's). Spend an hour there (assuming you survive), and you no longer fear death.

1. Does the smoke still bother you at this point or are you used to it?

If I said that if the state has a law about no smoking in public places, it should be in every public place; would that tell you how I feel?

2. Have you ever got so sick from the smoke you needed to leave the casino for a bit or go to another section of the casino?

I've left casinos because of players smoking before; the worst ones are the ones that have watch a stupid movie on Vegas that had a cigar stuck in their mouth, and they now think they have to do the same thing to win!

3. Do you have clothes you wear only to the casino and clothes you wear only to other places?

No, they are washed when I get home!

4. Have you ever been asked by a doctor if you smoke or had an adverse medical test showing signs of smoking?

No, but I know of some friends that have never smoked and now have lung problems, because they are always in the casinos!

5. Are smokers usually courteous to you or does it get to be a problem with smoke in your face?

Some are but there are way to many that don't give a damn about anybody else, take the time we are at a craps table, and a friend is in a wheelchair with oxygen, some guy buys in right next to her, and the first thing he does is lights up some cheap cigarette. When I said something to him, he wants to start a fight with me.

6. Do you take any steps to protect yourself from smoke like personal fans, masks etc or is it not that bad?

No, the doors are the first line of protection.

7. On a scale of 0 to 10 how much does smoke impact your casino experience? It can make it down right miserable, so a 10.

My wife will not go into any casino with me because of the smoke if she is with me to eat in a casino, and she walks into the casino when we are done, and there is the smell of smoke, she leave right away.

8. In your opinion what are the best and worst casinos for non smokers?

The casinos in Canada, because they are all non-smoking! Any of the older casinos, that have low ceilings and bad ventilation!

I still don't see how the dealers put up with players blowing smoke in their faces! There should only be one set of laws when it comes to smoking, if you want to kill yourself, do so; but don't take others with you, because you think that you have a god giving right to blow smoke in someones face.

One of my best friends that I worked with smoked all the time, and would tell others that he was exercising his lungs, when he was smoking, I would not eat lunch or dinner with him, because of his smoking all the time. When I got the phone call that he passed away I didn't have to ask what from. Cause of death lung cancer. I guess all of that exercising didn't do him any good!

When they first passed laws about smoking, I was on the side of the smokers, only because I wasn't around them, I was not forced into breathing the air they were blowing out, when they were smoking. Now days, I spend way to much time in the casinos, and I can see why so many people wanted laws in placed that protected them from smokers!

I'm definitely sympathetic, except I'm generally of the belief that private businesses should be allowed to make their own decisions.

A complicating factor is the high level of government involvement in gambling. If I want to accommodate non-smokers by opening my own casino, in most jurisdictions I'm prohibited unless I bribe enough politicians to obtain approval.

I always prefer to solve problems by removing government rather than adding it. I think if government stifling of gambling were eliminated, it would enable sufficient competition that smoke-free options would become available, and if not, at least people would have more freedom rather than less.

I find it very odd to smoke indoors, and I'm a pack a day smoker.

Even in a casino, it just feels weird. I do smoke in a casino (except those rare opportunities where an exit is within 50 yards and it's nice outside), but I can't do around people. I have to get up and step away. Even outside...if it's crowded, I always have to walk away. I probably look like I'm always trying to sneak a joint because I'm always off in some lonesome corner lol.

The yin to that yang is that there's certain places I'm gonna smoke, and if you don't like it, too bad. Unless you're going to physically remove it from my hand, I'm smoking it, and your chances of success at removing it from my hand are zero. For instance, inside my own vehicle. If I gave a non smoker a ride and he didn't like it, I'd abstain. No problem.

But if I'm just chilling by myself and he walked up and told me to stop?

There are already laws on the books that say you can't smoke in public places, even in parks, that are the great out doors! Here in NV you can't smoke in any place that serves food, so the big casinos went against the small bars because they had slot machines in them and tried to shut them down. Now these same restaurants and bars, had to put up partitions that block off where they have their slot machines and where they serve food.

In most places you can avoid smokers, but not in casinos. I know of non players that will go to the casinos so they can smoke their cigars, and be around other people. When they light-up they want to socialize. One of the problem today is these cheap cigarettes that people are now smoking, they smell like they are smoking burning rags.
Last night a player walked up to the table and even the dealer said something about what the player that just bought in was smoking.

I have a buddy that is a craps player, that smokes so much, that I kid you not; you can smell him ten feet away, he smoke these cheap cigarettes that nobody that is my age ever heard about. The next time one of this players are around you just ask them what brand of cigarettes they smoke, the odds are you never heard of them!

I'm not for the government passing all kinds of laws, but if you have something on the books already, make it the same for everybody, don't let the casinos get away with having smoking, because you think that your taxes will go down that you are making off them. Canada is a breath of fresh air when you play in their casinos, all of them are non-smoking, it didn't stop players from going to them!

Most people never think about what a smoker is doing when they are standing next to you smoking, but just look at one of their cars that they smoke in, most have a of scum and tar on the windows that you can see, they are blowing that same stuff at you when you are standing anywhere near them while they are smoking.

You have the right to smoke all you want, I don't want to take that right away from you, but I should have the right to breath air without breathing in your smoke, please go out side if you want to smoke, don't blow it on me!

Excellent rant, seriously :)

But laws are pretty much always administered unfairly. I would prefer to remove the existing restrictions rather than adding new ones. For example, I don't see the problem with Walmart allowing smoking should they wish to do so, as long as a competitor is free to accommodate me by prohibiting smoking.

A lot of people believe the purpose of government is to force everyone to behave alike, and it's a concept that doesn't end well.

I always prefer to solve problems by removing government rather than adding it.

A noble concept and perhaps a workable one but it seems contrary to our overly regulated world of drink sizes, tobacco packaging, etc. If someone gets injured its either a lawsuit or a fear of lawsuits that results in changes being made rather than some noble entrepreneur.

Even on the old Gambino boat out of Palm Beach there were two separate casino decks one for smokers and one that was for non-smokers. It of course lead to fights when spouses wanted to be together but non-smokers wanted hard-won fresh air.

From a Libertarian viewpoint, I loathe government regulations. From a fresh air and health viewpoint I simply can't understand the compulsion to throw away good lung tissue of tomorrow for a quick fix of nicotine today, particularly when that desire for a quick fix is induced by manipulative and deceptive acts of Big Tobacco and Hollywood nymphets who pretend great interest in Manly Marlboro Men but who clearly renounce such men when they start coughing their lungs up.

I recall an image of a young beautiful girl riding helmetless behind her helmetless Young Man, each wore only denim, not leather. Each accepted risks together. They enjoyed speed, they enjoyed each other and they obviously enjoyed freedom. Freedom of the open road, freedom to drive fast, freedom from regulations and fears. There is a certain beauty to youth and to those who embrace the unusual: a motorcycle instead of a car, a boat instead of an apartment, a zillion books instead of airheaded cocktail gabblers. There is joy in seeing someone choose the unusual and exotic. Even if they choose a very commercial beer they may choose to drink it while traveling to exotic ports. Or they may choose a craft beer yet work a more sane and sober appearing job. I met one CPA who gave up the nine to five world to become a commercial baker turning out desserts for the airlines. He went from Debits and Credits to Chocolate, Cholesterol and Sugar. Its the same beauty when you see a young girl owning her own business or becoming an expert at firearms. Individuality is essential to freedom. However, there does not seem to be a way to legislate tobacco smoke.

We have an expression "Not Worth A Tinker's Dam". Well, some of the first environmental control laws passed imposed on a Gypsy who worked with tin to keep his dam. He could not sell it, give it away, lend it to anyone or pledge it for credit. He could not abandon it. Ignorant peasants recognized the damage that tin in their food and water did, and laws that imposed a burden on a Tinker were accepted. A tinker could roam freely, charge whatever prices he chose and could abandon his occupation at any time, but he could not abandon that dam, not ever.

Prior to laboratory tests, leather breeches and wooden benches were the tests used to determine the purity of beer. The use of hops was made law, but don't forget that hops is what those darned Puritans wanted to be used in beer. Once we accept laws we tend to never regain freedoms.

Smoking? In all of nature creatures take drugs and there is no question that our brains are highly sensitive to drugs, particularly female brains. Apes choose drugs carefully. Why should not humans? The problem is that humans also choose to breathe and in our close confines the two can get difficult.

We accept to some degree the concept of marketing condoms in vending machines inside bars and this acceptance is based on an obvious situation of what happens when youth sex and alcohol combine to yield unwanted pregnancies. We recognize the practicalities of the situation, while also assuring the minister that his sermon from the previous Sunday will not be entirely forgotten. It is possible that Smoking and Gambling are also in a similar class of activities. The risk takers who spend time and money in a casino may indeed have a genetic preference for the risk taking behavior of smoking. That is not to say that all gamblers are smokers, only that an economically significant segment of gamblers may be smokers. This "practical reality" is subject to scientific inquiry and to economic inquiry. The Reward Deficiency Syndrome is the basis for the scientific analysis of the genetic influence. The economic inquiry is in the real of competitive differentiation without adopting an economically suicidal practice.

I could potentially see some Vegas casinos having a non-smoking area. If one tried it and it was drawing customers then other casinos would likely follow. I think this is what happened with poker rooms. As far as I know they are all non-smoking in Vegas. I would place the likelihood of a completely non-smoking Vegas casino at zero, except maybe a small slot parlor might decide to market itself as the smoke-free alternative.

The newer strip casinos seem to have solved this issue with high ceilings and good ventilation. I am rarely bothered at places like Mirage or newer.

In my home state of WA the tribal casinos are pretty much the only public places in the entire state that allow smoking. For this reason they are thick with disgusting smoke and I am sure it attracts smoking customers. Even so, one of the biggest has designated about half of the casino as non-smoking. Personally the smoke does deter me from gambling more, in addition to the fact that there is no real VP in WA.

I think it is funny when the dealers keep a little fan and aim it right in the face of a discourteous smoker. Unfortunately sometimes this blows the smoke directly at me.
