A few years back while eating dinner with a few AP/Poker Players . I mentioned to one of them I lived in the Naked City when I first got to town at age 20 without a car. He laughed and said that was nothing and that He was from some dangerous place in LA. This started a interesting debate that led to a bet between 2 of the other guys actually more of a challenge . The challenge was one guy would pay the other guy $800 a month for, four months to live in the naked city. The guy that was going to take the challenge was.... lets just say Vanilla Ice type, 29 successful and single. Stipulations were: He had to legitimately make it his home. He had to sleep there 80% of the time, He had to bring his current car (That he loved). He had to walk to at least 5 places nearby and bring at least one date home.

Challenge excepted

The very first day scouting for an apartment it was getting dark so he decided to leave. On his way out he got pulled over by the police. When he told the cop he was looking for an apartment. The cop told him to stop with the lies, warned him of STDs and tainted drugs and to stay away or he would be arrested.

Challenge ended fist day.

It is the area near the Stratosphere. An area known for drugs, prostitution, and poverty.

I drove by there and refuse to walk in that area. Anyway I did some searches and found some nice $400-500 rooms. I did look at extended stay places but they are kinda expensive for what they are. I'll be living out of hotels for a bit until I can find the right place.

Its not so bad. When I stay Downtown I go to
that liquor store thats right there by the Strat
all the time, and the Burger King thats right
there too. Never had a problem, even at night.

I think it is relatively safe on Las Vegas Blvd, but don't walk those neighborhoods behind the Strat at night.

Go behind the Strat further in the shadows near the old culinary building or the Hard hat bar at one time they had 9/6 jacks and 3 cards of the day it was 101.1. Hang out in the circle park at night then tell me its not bad. Especially in the old days of Vegas world. They had a big crackdown some years back because the new high-rise towers being built nearby and booming real estate market so its improved some however at one time it was the worst crime rated area in Vegas beating out even the slums of north town.

At one time it was a higher class place for well paid casino employees and a few locally famous entertainers supposedly the team “Naked City” was adopted because the showgirls used the swimming pools and flat roofs of the area to lay out in the sun (I like to image them naked) and avoid tan lines. Out with the show girls in with the crack whores

Thanks for the background on the name. Even if it's not true, it's a good story.

I was told that story in the early 90's from a man who was in his 70's at the time. He lived there for many, many years possibly from the 60's who knows. I choose to believe him and many local writers who report the same type of story. I did hear something about a 50' or 60's police drama television show having something to do with the name. perhaps you have some different information you would like to share. but just to throw in the statement "Even if it's not true" implies its not true and u know the truth.
