After STARE, I knew the answer was one of SCARE, SHARE, SNARE, or SPARE, so I went with the obvious probing word PINCH (PUNCH would have been equally effective).

I spent one minute solving this one.

I have been playing Hard Mode or else I would have used PUNCH for #2 and assured a 3 as DogHand mentioned. And of course of the 4 possibilities, I got it on the last one!
