I didn't get today's (Oct 15) either.

It turned into a guessing game, which I failed. I even did a probing word, but there were so many that rhymed that I couldn't cover all of them. I should have done a second probing word, which would have resulted in a 6.

I'm quite upset with myself about that.

After STARE, I had many choices: SHAPE, SHAVE, SHALE, SHAME, SHADE, SHAKE, SLAVE (though I recall the NYT eliminated that one), SCALE, SNAKE, SPACE, SPADE, and SPAKE, and probably others I didn't see. I figured NYMPH would tell me whether the second letter was a P, an H, or an N, and as an added bonus I would see if M was in the word.
