I got a 5 on 454 which I haven't done in forever.hope tonight is easier. I agree with wizard that word was inherently evil

This was so evil a word, the NYT reported on solve rates. Normal day: 99% solve in 6 or less. This puzzle (454): 41%.

I also missed it and killed a win streak of 120. So no dunce cap for either of us.

If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

I think "trice" means a short time, as in "I solved it in a trice."

I was wondering whether trice also means three times; it's good you pointed out that "thrice" is the correct word for that.

Good point. I was thinking of the word TRIED, as in the past tense of try. The expressed "tried and try" came to mind. However, why I accepted that spelling, I don't know. I was trying anything at that point and that it was accepted means it means something. After hunky, pared, and now trice -- I am going to assume the word picker at the NYT is deliberately trying to troll us all with an archaic or slang word from time to time.

Since other got it with a respectable score, I'm taking the dunce cap. Now let me sit in the corner and brood.

I got this one in four tries but I only got parer as a lucky guess in six tries. I did not know that was a word either.

At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.
