I had as possibilities for the third turn class and clasp (classy has two s's). Per my randomization strategy I rolled a die and it went my way.

That said, I got to wondering about the second turn.
For now, here are what I find to be the ten best second words for all scores of the first turn of zero or one match. The Wizard pick column shows my suggestion, based on the rank and obscurity of the word. I don't like to play words that are arcane "dictionary words," as Nareed might say, nor slang words. That is why I didn't pick CRONY for a yellow for the fourth letter. However, that the Wordle was recently HUNKY, gives me pause about avoiding slang.

As for only one green for the T in stare, I found the only possible word in the list to generate that score is ITCHY. Can you think of another?

I just scanned the Wordle possible answer words and did not see another word that would work other than itchy.

DOILY -- This one does not comply with my recent list of "one right" guesses, which suggested CLONE. However, I was willing to give up the chance of a 2 to get out an extra letter. What do you do in "one green" situations on the second turn?
VOUGE -- I didn't like using a V, nor a G, for that matter, but couldn't think of anything better that might be right. In retrospect, I probably should have taken another probing turn. Never mind that vogue is a foreign word.
CHIMP -- I went back to a probing word on this turn. I did consider BOOZE, but thought it was not a NYT kind of word. Also, hated to play a Z unless I was near certain it was right. I also considered NONCE, which comes up a lot in technical discussion of cryptography, but didn't think the general public would be familiar with it.
BOOZE -- Although I really didn't like the word, I couldn't think of anything else.
I need a drink after that one.

I could not get a letter in the right place to save myself.
Quote: MichaelBluejayA new MIT paper says the best starting word is SALET (and the 2nd-5th best are REAST, TRACE, CRATE, and SLATE). I skimmed the paper (and didn't understand most of it), and it seems their method is pretty different from the Wizard's, though I wouldn't say better or worse, I think it comes down to the definition of "best".

But from a short 150 days of playing, I'm seeing very few words with "S" in them. So it might be more valuable to evaluate without an "S" to see what the best word is.

The Wizard already did the heavy lifting, analyzing the frequency of each letter for each position. I do see that the Wizard didn't analyze the quality of SALET as a starting word, possibly because, like me, he didn't realize it was a real word.

The Wizard work is super cool and helpful. But Wordle is a “solved” game, and there is a “perfect” way to play, defined as minimizing the expected number of turns to solve each puzzle. That perfect way to play has Salet as the first word, and then of course there is a perfect second word based on the yellow, green and black we get. For hard mode the first word in “perfect” play is Dealt.
Note that Salet is a valid guess in Wordle but it is not one of the possible solutions.

As to "salet," I don't recall if it was in my list of valid words or if I just didn't like it, thinking it didn't have a good chance at a hole in one.
Quote: JoemanI'm curious if a solution word has ever been repeated. If it they don't do repeats, it seems that the ideal starting word would change over time, based on previous solutions.

I don’t think they’ve repeated yet.
My starting word POINT was the solution before but I still use it.
stare = xxyyy
relay = yyxyx
caper = xgygg
pager = ggxgg (I would have laid good odds this one would have been it)
paver = ggxgg (I really would have laid money this would be right, as I went through the alphabet and didn't find any other possibilities)
pawer = ggxgg (At this point I was going through the alphabet on the keyboard of the remaining letters and trying everything. I think I tried the W almost last. )
So, the answer is parer. Dictionary.com does not recognize this as a word. Normally Dictionary.com does recognize it when a verb it turned into a noun with a r or er, like rider or baker.
Grrrrr. Is it just me or was this one just evil? Let me go, I have some apples to pare.

I got that one in five. I didn't even know that was a word. Lucky guess on #5 for me.
