Folks,

In the category 50's Folk Ballads:

Ten years ago, on a cold dark night,
There was someone killed 'neath the town hall light

Bonus points if you can name the original singer.

Yes... We have a partial winner!

The title is correct, but the artist is not.

This is the original version sung by the late, great Lefty Frizzell in 1959. This video also contains an "Answer Song" sung by Marijohn Wilkin, one of the composers of "Long Black Veil", that tells the story from the point of view of the "best friend's wife".

Pack Up YourTroubles/Smile Smile Smile. Not sure if thatís the name.

Winner! Winner! Mosca packs a chicken dinner!

Its full title is "Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile", quite a mouthful. It won a British marching song contest in 1915 and was used for boosting morale. If you're wondering about the lyrics, "lucifer" was a popular brand of matches back then while "fag" is British slang for a cigarette. Note that structurally the song is very similar to another WWI song, "It's a Long Way to Tipperary".

------------------------------

And now, in the category 1920's* Novelty, name that song...

We've string beans, and onions
Cabbageses, and scallions,
And all sorts of fruit and say
We have an old fashioned to-mah-to
A Long Island po-tah-to

------------------------------

*Time marches on. I now have to specify 19 for 20's songs.
Have you tried 22 tonight? I said 22.

My guess...
"Yes, We Have No Bananas"

Winner! Winner! Yes! We have chicken dinner!

Spending five weeks at #1, "Yes! We Have No Bananas" is just one of those silly songs that seems to catch fire. Politicians quoted it. News columnists speculated on what part of people's psyche it had tapped into. It was everywhere. A more modern day equivalent might be the 90's "Macarena" craze.

-----------------------------

And now, in the category Made Famous in a Film, name that song...

Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate
Woman needs man, and man must have his mate
That no one can deny
Have you tried 22 tonight? I said 22.

As Time Goes By from Casablanca.

And despite it seeming to be the movie's catch phrase, Bogey never actually utters the phrase, "Play it again, Sam!"

You know, I have never watched Casablanca with Mrs Joeman! Thanks for the reminder, Gailmere! This is going to the top of our must watch list -- we seem to be watching a lot more movies at home these days!
