IIRC, the Academy immediately established a "no proxy recipients" rule after that. The only exception I can think of off the top of my head is when Jane Fonda accepted her father's Oscar for On Golden Pond.

And of course politics is involved - especially in the Documentaries. I wonder what's going to be brought up if RBG wins.
I'm just saying that it's not the driving force behind determining the winners...although it would explain how, in 2009, Sean Penn won for Milk over Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler.

Mickey deserved that Oscar -- that was a stunning performance

That's when I quit caring and watching.
Wrestler was awesome, Milk was awful.
I quit after 15 min..

At the end of the day the Oscars are an INDUSTRY award, given by people in the industry to other people in the industry. That's why I think it's funny that so many people get so upset that certain movies are or aren't nominated, or do or don't win, etc., and get mad and say, "It's just a big Hollywood circlejerk!" Haha, well, no ****, sherlock! That's exactly the point! That's what industry awards are for! It's no different than a plumber's union handing out awards for plumbing. It's not FOR YOU. They do it for themselves. I don't know why so many people don't seem to understand that and get so offended by what Hollywood does in their spare time.

The last scene of Roma as written in the screenplay:

"The patio, in shadows now, floats in the afternoon quiet. Borras sleeps and the parakeets are quiet. Only the hum of the city in the distance.

Cleo comes out of the kitchen carrying her load of dirty laundry and crosses the tiny patio to go up the metal staircase that leads to the roof. Her steps reverberate throughout the bony structure in a metallic moan that echoes through the tiny patio, waking the caged birds.

Cleo reaches the step in front of her room and keeps walking upwards.

A sweet potato vendor lets out his sad howl in the distance.

Step by step, Cleo ascends.

Yet further up, beyond the roof, the sky is pure."
So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.

I still need to watch a few on the list.

Green Book was my favorite so far. Fantastic.

I thought you hadn't seen it?

I watched Roma last night and really liked it, but I'd love to see BlacKkKlansman or The Favourite win. Those were the best movie going experiences I had last year. And I really hope The Favourite cleans up in the actress categories. I haven't seen Green Book or Vice due to poor reviews, and never got around to A Star Is Born. Black Panther was good but had the same tiresome plot devices and action sequences of all the Marvel movies.

Saw enough of it to know I hate
B/W and really hate subtitles. I
talked about this already. B/W is
so lifeless and so unlike real
life. Nobody see's the world
totally devoid of color. At least
most of us don't.
