Is driving a cab in Las Vegas more dangerous than driving one in College Station? Maybe, but how many people move to State College each year?
I briefly looked into driving a cab when I moved to Vegas, as I'd done in some years back in NY for a bit.
The two companies I called didn't hire part-time and they expected new drivers to work six 12 hour shifts each week for a minimum of thirty days before you could cut down to five shifts. One driver told me 90% of new drivers didn't make it 30 days, but no one cared because the applicant pool was endless. I signed up for both Uber and Lyft but never worked even a single ride.
Living and working in semi-rural Pennsylvania is undoubtedly safer than living in Las Vegas, but at the end of the day, you are still living in semi-rural Pennsylvania. Not exactly people's dream.

Bill,

I may be wrong on this, but I think one of the key differences is that at Penn State, a driver is a subcontractor who pays to access dispatch, so the driver can turn down this location or that customer (although it's frowned upon if you do it too much). But in LV, you're working directly for the company, which limits your ability to say, "Naw, I'm not going there."

Does that sound right to you?

I've no idea. My impression of Vegas taxis are they don't get dispatched to many calls and pretty much just line up at taxi stands. I would think that anyone with halfway decent credit is driving for uber or lyft these days.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.

I tried to get one (1) night downtown with Boyd and they said NO. Poor Speedy. I will play some craps there and see they will comp me a night when I am actually at the property.

Majority of unsafe situations are because people are putting themselves in those situations. And this isn't victim blaming, this is alcohol, THC, texting-while-driving, etc. I think stories about problems from working girls are over stated, but that is easily avoided. I think downtown is probably safer than the strip. Downtown casinos and the city work together to make Fremont a tourist destination. Step outside on the strip and you are on county property and there is not the same ongoing collaboration between the casinos and other agencies. The low end properties have millions of visitors and very small number them (maybe as low as zero) experience anything unsafe because some of the visitors are "undesirable".

Cab companies must set aside certain number of cabs for dispatch. Its a crappy assignment. But those cabs are not allowed to pick up people freely like most cabs. For others, its a free for all. But its performance based. If you are one of the higher grossing drivers, you get the nicest cabs to drive and won't get assigned to drive as a dispatch cab.

Anyone who has a complaint against a driver or cab company needs to report it to the Taxi Cab Authority. They actually have their own police dept. Specialized in citing cab and limo drivers, and companies.

I got the impression the new guys got cabs that kept them off the strip and they got stuck doing the crap work.
