Quote: rxwineI wonder if you had a business named "Wrong Way" or "Hippo Crossing" or "Unlucky Street" or "Dead End" or "Alien Abduction Zone" if they would accept it.
The rule seemed to be that it had to be your official business name and logo/font. I would bet that an official business, and they are not expensive to file for, called "Speed Limit 100" would get approved.
Quote: strictlyAPat some point I think that will end up in my rec room- anyone want to make some prop bets?

Hey, I got dibs, I called it first. The race is on..
i have seen adopt a highway signs with .com after them- i would have def fixed that wiz if I were you
back in the day there was a howard stern rest stop in jersey- the race was on for the plaque- eventually it was gone and so was the rest stop
it was back in the day when christine todd whitman named a rest stop after him
wiz I think someone grabs this at some point
there was a mile marker 420 also that kept being taken then just switched it recently to 419.9
Quote: WizardYes, I asked for that. Part of the red tape was CalTrans wouldn't allow it, because the ".com" is not in my official business name.
i cant believe you missed the easy fix, especially since you were at the sign.
1) magic marker/Sharpie
2) put .COM underneath the name
3) profit
heck, next time I drive by there, i'll do it.
heck, i'll even do a wizardofvegas.com bumper sticker and put it under your name.
how long is the sign staying up?
do they actually take down the sign when you stop paying?
are 3 intersections with Gay St signs. They started
disappearing about 25 years ago and the city finally
gave up replacing them. They usually didn't last a week.
The Wiz sign is history, somebody already has their
eye on it. It's too cool.

I'm certainly not stopping you from the ".com" idea. However, the sign is on a curved downhill slope, 20-something miles from Buffalo Bill's. So, let's not go too far as nobody will look at it for more than half a second.
Quote: EvenBobDowntown there's a 2 block street called Gay St
There is a also a Gay Street in Baltimore, right in the downtown area. Ironically, it isn't where the gay bars are. Don't ask me how I know.

Consider yourself on the suspect list as well.
Oh, and regarding you use or the word "their," please see this thread at DT.

Good enough for Shakespeare, good enough in
a road sign discussion. And I can't get the sign
in the overhead on the plane, so take me off
the list.
drove by there a lot. It was a Gay neighborhood
too, I'm sure that sign was a real collectible.
I have no doubt they have regulations in place. I'm sure there is a standard that must be meet in order to adopt one(A highway that is)Quote: DrawingDeadI wonder why these prominent local businesses haven't invested in at least several miles of highway beautification:
But how long will it be until it starts to look like the tree lined road seen in the heart sign at the top???
Err... so I've been told.
I'm gonna use a SawsAll and take the pole off around knee-level :-)Quote: FaceMaybe the left coast is behind the times, but they use one-way bolts here in WNY. Can't get them off without an angle grinder.

Quote: bwMaybe a business called "Speed Limit 100" or "Stop"
Lots of jokes about signs recently. One high quality restaurant in Colorado has a speed limit fifty sign.. but is located on a road that if you do more than 20 you will need a new front end alignment. Or the "stop" sign that is spelled "Spot"... this tiny little police department gets a few letters every now and then about it, but it seems everyone simply stops at it whether they laugh or not.
"Tourist Crossing Ahead" is fun. Or the sign in Alaska depicting a complex multi-street intersection ahead on a road that for miles and miles has no intersections at all. Or the "watch for airplanes" sign in a national park area with no airports for hundreds of miles.
I'd hate to have motorists wandering around looking for Wizard of Odds so get that 'dot com" part up.
The forms are in English.Quote: DrawingDeadI wonder why these prominent local businesses haven't invested in at least several miles of highway beautification.
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?
In California?Quote: FleaStiffThe forms are in English.
Quote: AyecarumbaIf, "ahem", the sign were to go missing, do you have to pay for a replacement? Would you still be on the hook for the monthly fee?
I think I would be. As I recall, I had to pay a one-time fee for the current one.
So, I'm officially asking everyone to leave my sign alone.

If you hammered on any exposed threads, the nuts would be hard to remove. (threads would be flattened) Of course, if the cops came by, they might be curious what was going on.

Take a chisel and split the exposed threads,
the nuts will never come off.
It looks like wood to me, a chain saw or something will work just fine. A .com sticker is a good idea.Quote: EvenBobTake a chisel and split the exposed threads,

Start the saw in the back of the truck,
30sec later the sign is in the back and
you're gone. It should have a steel post.
Quote: Wizard... I also dressed this way when I climbed this rope at Santa Monica beach earlier that day, except I had a nice collared shirt on.
C'mon, Wiz, a fit young man like you is supposed to climb that rope without using his legs! I am certain that the last time I climbed a rope to that height I did it with hand-over-hand only.
Of course that was close to fifty years ago, and I was 100 pounds lighter than now, but I'm not some guy who does pushups, rides a unicycle, and climbs mountains. I had a friend back then who climbed a rope like that using his legs loosely around the rope just to keep himself vertical. Of course, he climbed the dang thing upside down, pushing the rope down to propel his body and feet toward the top. I was never in the kind of shape to even consider such a stunt.
this once would be good.
Cutting out my ransom letter from the news paper now.Quote: EvenBobStart the saw in the back of the truck,

When I first watched the vid, I was more concerned with his use of legs while coming down. I suspect there was some rope burn issues, he has not shared. Lol.

My apologies to those who already saw the video at DT.
WOW, I'm impressed! Despite Doc's admonition, there's no way I could do that at my current fitness level, leg use or not. Something to strive for, I suppose.

I'm impressed you could climb a rope that long with you arms only at any age. Still, what percentage of 49-year-old men could climb it at all? I saw some other middle aged man try and he got about six inches off the ground.
I might add that as I recall in Full Metal Jacket the Marines were allowed to use their legs, and anything good enough for Sgt. Hartman is good enough for me.

When I was in college (first time), I was 5'10" and weighed 145 lbs. It doesn't take much in the way of arm strength to pull that kind of body up a rope. At age 49, I still played full-court basketball regularly with college kids, but I had gained enough weight that I definitely could not have climbed with hands only. No idea now whether I could have done it then with hands & legs. Of course, today I would need the assistance of a fork lift.
I assume you understand I was just joshing with you.

I always wondered why when I see film of Army Rangers dropping out of Blackhawk helicopters, they use what appears to me to be, a very large diameter rope, like the kind of rope used to tie up a boat, not the kind used in mountain climbing. Any thoughts? Is it easier/safer to descend a big cable?
As for the sign... Is it legal/safe to stop there for the photo op?
That seems about the same size as the ropes we had to climb in gym class.Quote: AyecarumbaI always wondered why when I see film of Army Rangers dropping out of Blackhawk helicopters, they use what appears to me to be, a very large diameter rope, like the kind of rope used to tie up a boat, not the kind used in mountain climbing. Not necessarily the width of the rope, but the width of the of the strands. Typical rope is made of three strands. Each strand is made of strands of smaller ropes. The bigger the strands, the easier it is to grip and get a handhold. It can also provide something of a foothold when locking your feet around it.
Quote: AyecarumbaIs it easier/safer to descend a big cable?
I'm not an expert on ropes, but I can say that the one in Santa Monica seemed ideal for climbing. It was much like that rope picture just posted.
The only Ranger I knew fell from a helicopter during training. He was always a gambler. Even more so on military missions.
He later went into a contractual relationship wherein a company of rangers would be assigned as his body guard as he did his "behind the lines" pyrotechnics work. (Ah, that's behind the enemy's lines) From time to time he would inform me of equipment breakdowns that seemed almost out of silent movies. Once the only communications link that was working for a certain operation involving a company of rangers on a special mission was his own personal computer. The military often operated the GPS satellites in civilian mode because most of the military GPS units were actually civilian devices.

Climbing ropes and rappelling ropes are different. There are also different ropes for different types of rappelling. Helicopter repelling and mountain repelling may not use the same rope for example.
