FrG -

I hope despite the smart-ass replies, you continue to make your presence felt around here.

Happy Easter to you and to the other Christian members.

Happy Passover to the Jewish members.

If there is a holiday around now for any other religion, I am unaware, so forgive my ignorance.

For the rest of the members, try not to be so automatically anti-religion.

Thanks, Father. Please add my appoligies to the wise-types here on the board. I always wonder why Christianity is the only religion it is seen as OK to make similar jokes about.

Are we going to have similar humor at Ramadan, gentlemen?

Although I am anti-organized religion enough that I became an ordained minister, my post was intended to express the weirdness that is, wishing everyone a happy Easter. It would be like me, wishing everyone a happy birthday, on my own birthday.

Not really. Most of the nation is one kind of Christian belief or another. Others choose to celebrate Easter as a secular holiday. And it is simply a message of goodwill to those who choose to accept it. If a person does not wish to accept it they should just leave it alone.

This thread was started by FrGamble to wish everyone a Happy Easter. It is a gesture of good will. It is what Americans and others have been doing for generations. Regardless of one's beliefs, the message is still the same.

The Wizard welcomed FrGamble to this forum and encouraged him to post. I don't think he expected FrGamble or anyone else to be constantly mocked and ridiculed for their beliefs whether they be about religion, gambling or any other subject.

Show me an atheist and I'll show you someone that is likely autistic. By simply asking a series of question that have no relation to religion, I can pinpoint the people that are most likely atheists. There also exists a type of social rebelliousness, antisocial behavior, and bitterness that is very easy to spot as well.

Please note, I am not referring to agnostics.

Did you actually read the article?

"I think it seems likely that a huge proportion of high functioning autistics are atheists, but, that doesn’t mean that a huge proportion of atheists are high functioning autistics"

Thats the opposite of what you said. Polar opposite,
in fact. You disagree with atheism, therefore its a
product of mental illness. You would have fit in well
during the Inquisition..

What do you mean, the USA was founded by followers of Satan as well as Christians? The Declaration of Independence mentions Satan? The Constitution was sworn before Satan?

When all of thses things happen we can have his B-Day for a holiday.

I'm pretty sure more Christians than atheists believe in Satan. It can be argued that Satan is just as important as the Trinity components in comprising the Christian mythos, so to answer your question...yeah.

Now if you meant followers of the Church of Satan, which is really just some weird hardcore libertarian nature worship and mysticism, then no.

In any case, the founding fathers tried to set up the government to allow both religions.

Also, I don't know if Easter really fits the definition of a national holiday...it's always on a Sunday so most government services and postal delivery are closed anyways. Good Friday is a bank holiday. http://www.opm.gov/operating_status_schedules/fedhol/2012.asp

I like the Jewish description of Satan: a good angel working for God who tempts people for the purpose of reporting back to God who succumbed to what temptation(s).

I know you're an atheist Bob, but as far as religions go, I'm sure even you would agree that the Jewish Satan is a little more down-to-earth sounding than some freaky-ass red-horned winged creature that plays records backwards and makes people vomit pea soup.

I'm fairly sure none of the founders were followers of Satan. I will concede that Judeo-Christianity seems to "personalize" evil with an individual more than any other religion I know of.

Quote:

The founders were a Christian group. At the founding well over 90% of the nation was some form of protestant with a few % Catholics and about 1% Jewish.

I would agree it is no national holiday. Good Friday seems to vary. I have worked at exactly one place where it was a holiday, and that was a Jewish-owned business of all things. The banks were I worked were open (though the Federal Reserve might have been closed.) It is NOT a day of obligation for Catholics, the service then is purely optional. Before my time, many small shops closed between 12-3 that day and as a kid we were told we were not supposed to have the TV or radio on.

Deism, which many founders subscribed to, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deism#Deism_in_the_United_States) may socially follow the Judeo-Christian ethos, but is more akin to Unitarian Universalism, which is definitely not Christianity and is denounced by many Christian groups today.

Even so, I'll grant that many founders were traditional protestant Christian...however they were still wise enough to know that religion should be left out of government, even making sure it was explicitly stated in the Bill of Rights as so...they had seen what the protestant/Catholic divide had done to Europe. That's why the Church of Satan has just as much right to be here as any other religion. The one Christian holiday that is a national holiday as well has secular connotations and pagan origins, so I'm fine with it.

I called Good Friday a bank holiday because the NYSE is traditionally closed, so that means I don't work on it. I did not know that some banks stay open...other than my bank which is open everyday except Thanksgiving and Christmas anyways.
