WoV resident doctor here..... I have been involved with probably now thousands of patients that have had lithotripsy, also called ESWL. I can't imagine NOT having it if I had a stone that was the size and position that was amenable to treatment. As procedures go, it is short, easily tolerated (you have an anesthesiologist who either puts you all the way to sleep or more commonly now heavily sedates you). And I don't know of any insurance companies that don't cover it. If I had a stone that was painful I'd be at my urologists office begging for ESWL.... today or tomorrow!

Minor update: Well, we did make it to Las Vegas yesterday afternoon, gathered our luggage in spite of various bits of misinformation that it might not have all come with us, picked up the rental car, and checked in at the Rio, where at least the parking is free. I was feeling far from my best, and I was beat from the trip. Couldn't eat, wasn't up to "enjoying" the tables, went to bed about 10:00, woke up at quarter to two, lay awake for four hours plus and decided I had had enough of that. I've been sitting up for the past half hour, trying to get comfortable and to let my wife get a little more sleep.

If I don't find a way to start having some fun out here, I know that I will be in for a year or three of "I told you so" from She who must be obeyed. So who's around here now, and what's on the schedule for today?

Doc I will tell you again. Drive West on Flamingo 3 red lights to Smith's Grocery store. Buy some asparagus and Coca-Cola. You need 72 ounces of Coke, so that is a 6 pack or a couple 2 liter bottles. Since you won't have the ability to blend the asparagus into a smoothie as directed, chew on it sucking out the juice. The juice is what is important. When you have finished that, such down 72 ounces of Coke within an hour. I predict by Friday Morning you will be good as new and able to enjoy the weekend. What do you have to lose? 5?

Folks, I really do appreciate the suggestions, but I think I am conservative enough to just follow the directions of my own urologist on this one. He's the one looking at the CT scan image and the medical background.

The kidney pain has been reasonably bearable -- my bowels seem to have decided to take the week off, and I am quite boated and haven't been feeling like eating. Took some extra strength tylanol last evening after no food all day and very little the day before. Within half a minute, I was heaving. Don't know whether that is related to the stone or not. Just not the usual Vegas vacation, but I am going to try to make the best of it.

And darkoz, the answer is no. I've never bothered to get on that coaster, and I don't think this is the week for a trial run.     ;-)

a little story about misc. medical advice,

I was spending a lot of time visiting my Dad once while he was in the hospital. A nurse came by and said something like "make sure he drinks this mango/prune/eye-of-newt juice VERY IMPORTANT". So I saw he hadn't after a while and said, "Dad, important, drink this!" and he says the nurses are driving him nuts with that stuff. So I stick around and sure enough a new nurse comes on and she has this "onion/vinegar/durian" or somesuch juice that is VERY IMPORTANT he drink. Soon I figure out my dad was right: each one of these various nurses had some silly thing they read and got convinced about that if he drank it, it was going to cure him.

now I do realize you are saying you yourself can vouch for the asparagus/coke ... so I'll admit that is different.

Just saying.

Well, I didn't mean to come off as vouching for anything. If you read the post I made yesterday, I said it doesn't make any sense as one ingredient is alkaline and beneficial to one type of kidney stone, and one ingredient is acidic and beneficial to the other kind of kidney stone. Logic says they should cancel out and maybe they do.

All I know is my first bout with kidney stones, I had gone 2 solid weeks of absolute agony. By the time I went to the doctor, I was told it was too late to get that microwave treatment as the stone was already in the tube. This was years ago, so things may have changed with that technology. But anyway when you are in agony for 2 weeks like I was you will try anything. And in searching the internet, I kept coming across this remedy called Doc something's kidney stone remedy. One night after rolling around on the floor all night, I made my way to the grocery store and bought asparagus and coke. After sucking down the asparagus and coke I passed the stone about 6-7 hours later.

Several years later, when I had my second round with kidney stones, I drank my asparagus and coke the first day and passed a stone that night. I am an educated man, so i am not endorsing or promoting anything. All I know is that when you are in the agony that kidney stones cause, you will try anything. And this odd, less than $5 remedy has worked twice for me.

Hi Doc. After almost full day of fun and goofing off yesterday, I need to get some work done today.

I did a little searching and the D in downtown LV is having a Vegas Golden Knights viewing party tomorrow. Anyone interested? Please click the link for more information. If there is sufficient interest, perhaps we could rent a cabana.

I've never developed a strong interest in ice hockey, perhaps because I have lived almost all of my life in the deep southeast, where it is about as strong a sport as cricket. I think the only ice hockey match I have ever attended was in the late fall of 1968 in Roanoke, VA, and I can't remember whether that was between minor league teams or was an exhibition of major teams.

On the other hand, if it gives us a good chance for an additional social interaction as part of Spring Fling 2018, I would certainly want to participate. (Confession: when the topic of VGK tickets came up maybe a week ago, I didn't even know what sport they played.)

I would attend the viewing. I'm not sure how busy it'll be. Would we need to plan on reserving a table? If so, looks like it's about $55/head ($100/2-people, plus fees)

Two possible interpretations of your criticism:

(a) You really believe in the (mostly) Canadian emphasis that "hockey" (without the "ice") is the appropriate name of the game, thereby disparaging the original sport.

(b) You prefer the use of "game" instead of "match", which is a word-usage topic long discussed on the internet with the only conclusion seeming to be that in tennis the two terms have distinctly different meanings.

I haven't read the secondary links from the posted link, just the original. Sounds a little pricey for watching a TV screen at what is described as a "free" event. $55pp just to have a table to sit at? What does a cabana (as suggested by the Wizard) cost?

BTW, do the comments "$55/head" and "$100/2-people" suggest that there is a group discount?

There's a $37/table fee and table pricing seems to jump per 2 guests. I expressed the fee as $5/person.

Below is the eagerly-awaited photo of the main gathering for WoV Spring Fling 2018 at -- wait a second -- is the location still a secret? I'm not sure, so I'm not going to post it here. At the point of this photo, we had completed dinner, had a trivia contest (won by Keeneone, with rdw4potus 2nd and Doc 3rd), and paid our bills. Shortly after the photo, most of the members of the group departed for the Golden Nugget to play poker. I didn't join them for poker and haven't a clue where they went from there, so someone else will have to fill in those gaps if the full story is to be told.

Several attendees are not shown in the photo. It appears that RS had left the area prior to this photo being taken. As noted on the photo, ZenKinG was there but chose to stand to the side. There were also four non-members (all female) who attended; these included Mrs. Doc (who was trying to look after me), Heather (who appeared to have arrived with the Wizard and who I think departed right after the meal and trivia), Brittany (who accompanied Romes), and Krystal (who arrived with darkoz and who took the photo with my camera). I apologize to any of those whose names I misspelled, and I appreciate their all being there. If there were any anonymous lurkers observing our festivities, I was unaware of them; if they were there, at least they didn't seem to cause us any difficulties.

Those appearing in the photo include, left to right, Keeneone, rdw4potus, darkoz, MaxPen, PokerGrinder, Wizard, Doc, Romes, beachbumbabs, and Bruce1. I hope that those who consider attending these events in the future will understand from this image that we do take reasonable precautions to protect the identities of those who wish to remain anonymous.

I sure hope DarkOz doesn't wear that mask while trying to AP. It looks like it would create more attention to him and whatever he is doing.

It's scary to say the least. I am zooming in to try and find the seams but there are none. Too real.

Is anyone still in town?

I have no idea whether any of the non-local members are still in town. I had planned to still be there and fly home this evening on an 11:30 flight. Since I haven't been feeling so well this past week we decided on Saturday to change our reservations and fly home on Sunday. I am very glad that we made the trip to Las Vegas for Spring Fling 2018 and also very glad that we came home early. I was just not feeling up to having the kind of fun that should be part of a Vegas Vacation.

Axel, I am very sorry that I did not get a chance to see you again this year. I hope that whatever interfered with your attending was a very profitable venture.

BTW, with regard to your "explanation" for Romes's thumbs-up gesture, it should be noted that for this event he was accompanied by a young lady with attributes that would qualify her for the kind of entourage I have seen with you at times (if she had any interest in being with you instead of him, that is.)   ;-)

Axel, you might get a kick out of this: When darkoz arrived in that mask, I'm not sure that any/many of the attendees were aware/sure that it was a mask. It was convincing enough that he just seemed to be a really weird-looking guy. During/after dinner, he stepped to center stage at the end of the main table and removed the mask. As he started, everyone became quite aware that it was a mask, but it took him a while to get it off.

Here's the kicker: while he was removing the mask, there were background conversations with guesses about who he really was, and I promise you that a couple of folks were commenting that it was AxelWolf, who had just pretended that he couldn't make it!

I hope you weren't in too much pain on the way home, Doc, and get past your kidney stones as painlessly and quickly as possible. Please keep us posted on how you're doing. I'm sure a lot of us younger members will be in your shoes eventually, so you are blazing a path here.

I, of course, am still in town. If anyone is up for lunch on Wednesday, we can celebrate Joan Collins' birthday.

It's obvious BBB has her hand on his ass and Romes thinks it's Mike.

Ha! Funny. :)

I was surprised at how few Star Trek questions were asked.

One was about Jenny's phone number, although apparently people veto'd that one.

Next time we need more math questions.

Perhaps as part of spring fling 2019 we can have us go into a casino (any one doesn't matter) with me in my mask. I will play a few rounds of craps and blackjack

You guys will literally see nothing happens. Surveillance wont rush over and ask me if my face is really so ugly it appears im wearing a mask. They wont throw me to the floor rip off my shirt and peel my skin off

It will be quite uneventful. Hopefully i win some money playing craps :)
