Quote: AsswhoopermcdaddyDid anyone just see what happened tonight for the Miss Universe contest? Poor Steve Harvey......guess he won't be invited to host again next year. Mulligan!!!!!
Nope. Watching football. Do tell.
Quote: beachbumbabsNope. Watching football. Do tell.
Steve screwed up. He read the wrong name to start giving Miss USA the runner up and Miss Columbia the grand prize. Then he had to correct himself on global television giving Columbia the runner up and Miss Phillipines the grand prize.
Then you could hear booing in the background as he tries to correct himself before he walks off stage. Miss Phillipines is stunned. Miss Columbia is dumbfounded. The world is pissed!
Steve even shows the card; he read it wrong, but did the right thing by correcting himself. WOW!!!!!!
From what I can see, it's not really Steve Harvey either, though he took responsibility. It's the idiot accountants/producers that didn't write EVERY WORD he needed to say on the card, just like a cue card. You can't take stuff like that for granted when it's a live broadcast with people screaming. They handed him a card with little print and several names, I couldn't tell what besides their names was on there, but not much - it was mostly blank.
"The second runner up is Miss USA"
The first runner up is Miss Columbia"
"Miss Universe 2015 is Miss Philippines"
How hard is that?
My response -- I feel so sorry for Steve. I'm a game show enthusiast and I think he is one of the best hosts of any show of all time. He did the right thing to own up to the mistake on live TV, as I would expect him too. I wish I could give him a hug right now -- I'm sure he feels just awful.

lol. But someone should give Mr. Harvey a hug too. Or something.Quote: petroglyphI want to give miss Columbia a hug.

"And the top rated sedan for 2016 is Mercedes. Wait, wait..."
Yep.Quote: RigondeauxThe video was cringe-tastic. The ladies will be the two most famous contestants of all time and both make a nice chunk of change. The commercials write themselves.
"And the top rated sedan for 2016 is Mercedes. Wait, wait..."
It's the best thing that ever happened to them and the event. I had no clue this was even happening until now.

I would have voted for her over Miss Philippines any day.
We have sports commentators who make blunders - terms such as Colemanballs ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colemanballs ). Today the Daily Mail included some by Jimmy Hill, who was a famous football [soccer] commentator and died over the weekend ( http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3368398/Ladies-man-led-chin-outspoken-views-Jimmy-Hill-one-TV-s-famous-faces-private-life-just-colourful.html ).
They are both stunningly pretty, I have just had better "luck" with bridesmaids than brides.Quote: WizardI would have voted for her over Miss Philippines any day.
There are few times in this world where women of this caliber would stoop to my level, this is one of those times. A little grief rumble would make us both feel better. The difference is, the morning after I would still be proud of myself. : )

Do you have a high opinion of Peter Tomarken? He's my favorite, but even being objective, he'd still make my Top Five.

Well, since this MU event was likely a one-off, let's continue the derail. :) My favorite host of all time was Bill Cullen (I don't know why, really) followed closely by Allen Ludden (long time Password host and husband to Betty White). Bill hosted a bunch of shows (23 in all), but started as a joke writer on the radio for people like Jack Benny, Danny Kaye, and Arthur Godfrey. He was Goodson/Todman's (production company for dozens of shows over the last 50+ years) first game show host, on the radio with Winner Take All.
He hosted many still-familiar shows, including Name That Tune, and The Price Is Right for 10 years. My personal favorite was Eye Guess, a rebus-guessing show for prizes; I even had the home game (with him on the box). I didn't know until reading the wiki for this short bio that he had polio as a child and was disabled from it; I never saw anything on TV that indicated he had it, but it's why he lost his TPIR gig to Bob Barker (when they changed the format, he couldn't move around on stage like the game required).
Back on topic, I agree with Wizard; Steve Harvey is being very decent and honest about the whole thing, and is very embarrassed, which I think will live on forever, but probably in his favor after some perspective. Ca-ca happens.
I have started a thread where we can continue the derail, if you like: Game Show Host Mount RushmoreQuote: beachbumbabslet's continue the derail.
Not that I think there should be any reaction on FF, the show is pre-recorded, so any comment or reaction may take weeks to occur.Quote: GWAEI watched FF today and no immediate removal of Steve so that is good. Of all people to piss off, the Columbians would be on a short list of one's that I wouldn't.

Well yeah wasn't expecting them or him to say anything but if there was much outrage they would have pulled the show for the time being. I can't wait until he makes fun of himself on FF. I watch it everyday when I get home from work while I wind down.
Colombia~Columbia... fine... I guess. In other news... Miss Philippi won MU.

It was just announced or at least stated, on FOX News, that Steve was drinking prior to the event, and even more surprising, playing high limit roulette. I don't know if at Hard Rock or another property. It's difficult to have pity on a guy this lucky in life to be drunk and stupid enough to play roulette for big money. He had also failed to show up for the rehearsal according to the report, where said "card" would have been available for screening(I assume without names).
Another member mentioned that Miss Columbia "didn't speak English". I don't know if that's possible, difficult to imagine they had judges who were literate in all of the worlds languages? Or is there a speaking portion of the Miss Universe pageant??
Lastly, those of us who at least at first thought it was funny need to ask ourselves why? I sure did and have been asking all day, Why was that woman's suffering funny? It told me to get in to see a Doctor sooner rather than later.
IIRC When she made her speech she had an interpreter. There may be other reason for that but I would guess it's limited English. Who knows? But I'm certain this was all a good thing.Quote: NokTangIt was just announced or at least stated, on FOX News, that Steve was drinking prior to the event, and even more surprising, playing high limit roulette. Yes, the use interpreters I later discovered. I don't see how the judges could get a feel(no pun) for the contestants that way. In addition, they were there for three weeks competing, doing what I also don't know.
Lastly, on TMZ there were several photos of Steve Harvey at a Caesars roulette table. He looked like a thug, and it was only a $25-$5000.usd table. Not exactly "high limit" as I'm sure Caesars would go higher since they take $50,000.usd on "all" craps tables.
Quote: GWAEIt is funny because sometimes things in this world need to be less serious. Sure, she is probably going to need therapy, but we can also question the mentality of someone who performs in this type of event. I feel sorry for her but in reality it is not a big deal.
Good point. I doubt she will need therapy. There is another side of beauty contests as you imply, especially when children involved. I was less than impressed by the line up I saw. Show me a topless beach in Spain and I'm actually more excited and the ladies are better looking as well!

Wait those ladies have faces?
On a serious note, the entitiring modeling and beauty contestant business is ruthless. I can just imagine how bad it is in some other countries.
Quote: CBS SportsThe Frisco RoughRiders, a Texas Rangers minor-league affiliate, are trying to capitalize on the monster as only minor-league baseball can:
"[We] are thrilled to announce a celebration of Miss Philippines Miss Colombia and other all-time great second-place finishes with "Runner-Up Night" at Dr Pepper Ballpark. The night will take place on Tuesday, April 26, which is the second game of the second homestand of the Riders' 2016 season.
[...]
The RoughRiders plan to formally invite Ariadna Gutiérrez Arevalo, "Miss Colombia," as a VIP guest for the night. Gutiérrez will enjoy a suite for the night and an opportunity to throw out the first pitch. The RoughRiders are also inviting Steve Harvey to serve as the on-field host for the evening.
And that's not all. The RoughRiders also plan to invite Jim Kelly, Andre Reed and Marv Levy of the four-time three-time NFL runner-up Buffalo Bills, along with "Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera (runners-up on Star Search); Adam Lambert and Clay Aiken (American Idol); Carrie Underwood and Michelle Obama (high-school salutatorian); Al Gore and Mitt Romney (presidential elections); and Cowboys running back Darren McFadden (two-time Heisman Trophy runner-up).

Yeah, I could NOT believe either the camera angle (not capturing all 3 women) or that they CUT as the crown touched her head (I watched the live feed and that was what they did). For full effect, you have to watch the original crowning with the foreknowledge she's going to get stripped, and live through how long they let her stand there while they got it straight backstage; most everybody edited that out, but it was about 3 - 3 1/2 minutes. And then people moving robotically and confused with stupid smiles pasted on their faces until the very-practical MU 2014 comes out and goes no-nonsense on her countrywoman, taking the sash and crown. Just astounding, the dynamics of all of it playing out on the live feed.

It is awkward to even watch. She just stands there by herself on the stage. You would think someone would come to her quickly when it is done correctly. After steve said the name I can just imagine what was going on back stage and in the control room.
Miss Vanessa Williams, 1983 http://www.biography.com/people/vanessa-williams-9542151
As much pain as miss Columbia will go through, a few million dollars should help.
Vanessa was demeaned and derided set up framed and exploited and asked to not even come back to the 84 pageant.
It would be a good time for a big fat retroactive apology.
