Maybe a lot of Vegas folks can relate to this.

the next time Dame Fortune toys with your heart, your soul and your wallet, raise your glass and praise her thus: “Thanks for nothing, you cold-hearted, evil, damnable, nefarious, low-life, malicious monster from Hell!” She is, after all, stone deaf. ... Arnold Snyder

I think a lot of game inventors could relate to this, wherever they are from. I've gone to the Global Gaming Expo every year since 1999, including when it was called the World Gaming Expo. Every year (except the first) I saw some new faces and some old ones in small booths demonstrating their games. Some tried really hard, or were just very stubborn, as they were there year after year, despite their games never seemingly making it to a casino floor. I must have seen Spin-n-Win and Whoop Ass Poker at least five consecutive years. However, alas, I think last year both of them finally threw in the towel.
At the risk of going off topic, I think this illustrates the value of a focus group, with multiple games, and qualified judges, to avoid years of disappointment, in favor of getting it over with in a couple of hours. Kind of like taking a bandage off in one quick pull or one hair at a time.

If the focus groups are held in a laboratory setting with a moderator who is a professor and the recording instrument is obtrusive, the participants may either hold back on their responses and/or try to answer the moderator's questions with answers the participants feel that the moderator wants to hear.
I think this might have applied to the feedback session at SMI.

I have participated in numerous focus groups for the development of new medical devices and drugs. I think they are very helpful to the prospective manufacturers. Usually there are a dozen of us practicing anesthesiologists, and we let the presenter know what problems the device or drug would have in a real practice setting. I also think they learn what they will need to say to market the product, as well. After one of these focus groups, the sponsoring company hired me as a consultant, to try and develop a new technology and market it. I worked for them for around 3 years, and the product we developed never was able to make it to the market, as it eventually proved to be no better than the existing technology, and cost a tad more to produce. But it was fascinating for me to see the work involved in trying to get a new product to market.

I usually don't post in game inventor threads, but Whoop Ass Poker? That sounds AMAZING!

Anything sounds amazing if you put Whoop
Ass in front of it.
