Quote: PokerGrinderThere was a funny thread on the MoGH chat boards the other day.
You might be a chip collector if...
1) You drove over 100 miles just to collect 1 chip. (I have driven a lot longer than this for 1 chip)
2) You plan vacations around areas that have casinos. (It is definitely a factor)
3) You're worried what security thinks while you walk around looking into all the chip trays to find what you are looking for. (I have done this a couple of times)
Any more to add?
-- You regularly buy in for $24.
-- Your first thought when you hear the word "ceramic" is "Chipco"
OK, so I look at that casino name, and the first thing that comes to mind is a poker game or VP machine where you are "Dealt in" with "Jack-Ace-Queen-King".Quote: PokerGrinderCasino: Deltin JAQK
Does the name of the place involve some dumb pun like that, or is it based on someone's name or a word in the local dialect?
City: Panaji, Goa, India
Casino: Deltin Royale Casino
These posts don't come every day so maybe we should change it to the "Chip of the day 5 or 6 times a week thread". Btw I should note that although I am listing all these casinos as being in Panaji that isn't exactly true. They are all from Goa but there is some argument that each casino or most of them have different "areas" that they are in. Oh well I'm going with it as is.
Today's chip of the day is from the Deltin Royale Casino in Panaji, Goa, India. I visited this casino boat on my last day in Goa. I woke up feeling like I got hit by a truck after the accident but I had 2 more casinos to visit and by golly I was going to visit them! I paid 3500 to get onto the casino boat and I was given 2500 OTP chips. I think this was the highest entry fee that I paid during my visit. The casino has 18 slots and 32 tables. They also had a bunch of giant screens with 20 terminals in four rows where you could play live roulette, live baccarat, automated roulette, virtual sic bo, virtual baccarat and virtual roulette on each machine. I played 500 minimum BJ and won 3650 and 500 off my 2500 in OTP chips.
They had a little lunch spread of chana masala, dal, rice and I was able to order these fried crab things which were really good. It was real crab meat on an actual crab pincher, it was breaded and fried. I had many of those! I left to go visit the last of the casinos in Goa.
The chip is quite sleek looking, overall I was quite impressed with the quality of the chips in Goa. The chip is black with 4 sets of white edge inserts. The centre inlay takes up most of the chip and is not cluttered at all. The casino logo and the Deltin Group logo are in the middle with the denomination on the bottom.
Tomorrow (most likely lol) will be my last chip from India and then I plan on spending the next 2 months posting from Cambodia.

PG,
Please don't beat up on yourself too much about not posting every day. When you (or others) post, then that is the Chip of the Day. Hey, even the Good Lord took a day off, if I recall correctly.
And, many thanx for the great gambling-geography-sociology lessons in your posts. Your chip and trip reports are great.

City: Panaji, Goa, India
Casino: Deltin Caravela Casino
Today's chip of the day is from Deltin Caravela in Panaji, Goa, India. This casino boat is the final casino in Goa that I have to cover. This casino is clearly not doing well as the women who took my entry fee warned that there was only one player aboard the ship. Also for a 3000 entry fee I was given 5000 OTP chips which shows that they are desperate for customers. The casino had 14 tables and no slots. They opened the BJ table for me on request and I played 500 minimum BJ. I only won 1500 off of my 5000 in OTP but I won 2650 while playing so that was ok. I wasn't thrilled with this place as they were using chips from Casino Royale Goa and the only chip that said Casino Caravela on it was a junket chip that no matter how much I pleaded with the boss I couldn't get him to sell me one. I absolutely hate when casinos use chips that don't have their names on them. Sadly I was forced to keep a non Caravela chip from Casino Caravela.
The chip is black with six red edge inserts. The centre inlay is white with a red border around it. The casino name is in black (the wrong casino grrrr) and the denomination is in red. If I am remembering correctly this is the first chip from India that has a location on it.

... If I am remembering correctly this is the first chip from India that has a location on it.
And ironically, the name of the casino is incorrect.
I recall that this casino name is common on “clay” chips available for purchase on the internet (without the “Goa”). I don’t know if it is a licensed product from the James Bond film(s).
For me and this thread, the difficulty is in deciding which name to list on the CCotD post and in the thread index. More often than not (I think), I have listed the chip based on the name that is on the chip and then explained the complication in the post. (As an example, check my post of the Kura Hulanda casino chip from Curaçau.) I generally do that because it leaves open the possibility that someone later might get a chip that really says the name of the casino I visited, and we could have both casinos represented here.
But that might not always be the best way. For example, I don't even know whether there really is (or was) a Casino Royale in Goa. The Deltin Caravela might have been using some mock-up chips or such, either temporarily or long term. Since PG really went to that casino and posted the chip he got there, I have no problem with posting/indexing this "Casino Royale" chip for the Deltin Caravela.
City: Poipet, Cambodia
Casino: Grand Diamond City
For today's chip of the day I will be moving into Cambodia where I collected the bulk of my chips in Asia. Today's chip is from Grand Diamond City Casino in Poipet, Cambodia. Poipet is the border town on the Thailand-Cambodia border that houses a bunch of casinos for Thai gamblers as Thailand has no legal casinos. I have heard multiple people call the town the armpit of Cambodia and I haven't heard a single good thing about the place. I have read one blogger's post which had kind words about the little border town but for the most part it is known as a cesspool. Knowing all this I had to go! My plan was to bus to the border from Bangkok, cross the border and instead of immediately arranging transportation to Siem Reap I decided to stay the night. Almost no backpackers stay the night in Poipet as all it really offers are casinos.
I stayed at the Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino for about $60 USD while my sister decided to fly to Siem Reap from Bangkok. I got my room after about ten minutes at the front desk, they seemed confused why the white guy was staying there. I got to my room (after going back down to get a working key) and changed my shirt as I was completely drenched from the 100 degree heat and carrying my backpack for the last 40 minutes. I went downstairs to the casino and exchanged USD to Baht as that was what 95% of the tables used. They would exchange it back to USD at the same rate within 24 hours which was perfect for me.
The BJ table was full so I played Pai Gow at 300 minimum. 100 Baht is $3.18 USD. I lost about 1500 there and then went to play BJ at 100 minimum when it was empty. I ended up winning 2315 Baht before moving on. I kept 100 Baht chips from each casino as most casinos used generic or just plain one colour chips for denominations under 100. A lot of the 5 and 25 Baht chips had nothing on them and looked like chips from a $5 Wal Mart set.
The chip is white with 3 tan/blue/tan edge inserts. The denomination is in tan 4 times around the chip. The centre inlay is white with a tan border. The casino logo takes up most of the centre inlay. The casino name is purple, the denomination in red and it says cash in black to indicate that they are not NCV chips.

Hello...In case anyone reading these quite entertaining posts for information, the "Tropicana" located in PoiPet is a decent hotel. I have tried to stay at the Grand Diamond without success. The room was in an odd place i.e. obstacle course to get to it, elevators didn't work, etc.. The Tropicana is off the main strip and very clean and efficient. The rate varies as always depending on if you have a players card etc.. There is no craps in Cambodia for those who only play craps. Plenty of baccarat and I assume enough black jack and various carnival games. Gidday.

Thanks for the info NokTang. Would you agree with the “armpit” description of the town, or is that just for backpackers? Is PG lucky to not have been robbed at knife point two steps out the door of the hotel?

I might have 15 years ago, but things have changed there like everywhere. Now the road is paved on to Siam Reap vs a dirt road, and well, the casino's have provided employment albeit at very low wages. The typical Thai visitor stays in their casino hotel. Most of Cambodia is very poor including PoiPet. Armpit is just slang I suppose, it's no dirtier than various other small towns you will pass through overland. There is nothing else there to see and do so perhaps that contributes. Crime?....not a lot of reports of muggings etc. inside the casino zone. There again isn't much of a zone outside same. It's just poor, no so much dangerous IMHO. The brothel scene has died down but even in its heyday catered to casino guest(Thai) doing outcalls much more than "sex tourists". The brothels I've visited there were scroungy and dirty and "sticky" sheets and all of it which adds to the excitement of it all. About half and half, Cambodian and Vietnamese workers(yes, I'm talking about the sex workers, not the casino workers). No chain food restaurants etc., all of it basically street food sometimes disguised with a shed. People live in tin sheds in Cambodia FYI vs concrete in Thailand. So the nuts and bolts of my rambling is that PoiPet isn't a stopover for folks going on to Siam Reap overland, which many do. The local scene is just Cambodians and a few odd ball backpackers who came too late to go on to Bangkok/Siam Reap. The border itself isn't 24/7 BTW which again might contribute to what little scene there is outside of the casinos. Anyhow, I miss it already, maybe I'll catch a bus up there soon. If only they had craps and a sports book you could trust....sorry for again rambling, thinking and typing at the same time has it's drawbacks. I'm not going to go back and edit...cheers mate.

I thought it was only us state-siders who consistently blame everyone else for mistakes we make. You probably did post every day, but sometimes the Internet loses stuff. Just repost, and don't blame anyone. My 2 cents.

Hey Doc, here's something that might help you. I found my Vancouver souvenirs, including the November 2002 issue of Western Player magazine.
It has a listing of British Columbia casinos.
I'm pretty sure my memory about walking to the casino is wrong. We probably drove to the casino, because the Great Western Casino listed at 1133 W. Hastings St. in Vancouver better matches what I remember of the area where the casino was.
The casino that was at 709 W. Broadway would have been too far of a walk and the area doesn't feel familiar. (The MoGH Chip Guide listed those chips being at 711 W. Broadway—who's right? Did the address change??)

Casino: Golden Crown Casino
Today's chip of the day is from Golden Crown Casino in Poipet, Cambodia. I haven't been able to confirm one way or another but I don't think this casino has any relation to the Melcro Crown Co. This is one of the few Asian casinos that I was able to find some information on. Golden Crown opened on April 10, 1999 or October 4, 1999, I can't be sure lol. MoGH says the casino has 150 slots, 77 tables and 2 poker tables. They definitely didn't have any poker tables so I don't know how accurate that information is.
They opened the 100 minimum BJ table for me on request and I played one shoe, well more like half a shoe as they cut off half of it after shuffling. In the shoe I won a massive 400 Baht before I headed on my way. I tried to not stay too long at any casino as I only had 6-8 hours to collect all the chips in the city. There is another casino called Dream World Casino attached to the Golden Crown but all of their table games used cash not chips, both USD and Baht cash. I saw this in most of the casinos in Poipet and I would see it again here and there in Cambodia.
The chip is a very worn out black Chipco. One side of the chip has the Golden Crown logo on top of some odd shape, I have no idea what the shape is trying to be. The casino name is written in cursive above the denomination in Baht. On both the right and left of the centre it says "cash" to show that it isn't a OTP chip. The backside of the chip has a crown in the middle of the chip and it also shows the denomination and "cash" as it does on the other side.
City: Poipet, Cambodia
Casino: Holiday Palace
Today's chip of the day is from Holiday Palace Casino in Poipet, Cambodia. The casino hotel opened in January 1999. I played 100 minimum BJ out of a continuous shuffler and they still burned a card before each hand for some reason. I lost 2000 Baht in my short session at Holiday Palace. The dealers at the BJ table were so nice, they were so worried and upset that they were taking my money. I kept telling them that it was ok and I wasn't mad at them.
The chip is brown with two small circular indents at 2 and 8 o'clock. The centre inlay is white with a grey/blue border. The casino name and location are in black and the denomination is in the middle of the chip in red. The other side of the chip the centre inlay has "HPp", the "H" and the upper case "P" share a line.

Not at all lol. I just stopped being lazy. I have very little motivation to post a chip when I get home at 2 am and for some reason I am incapable of posting earlier in the day.

Casino: Poipet Casino
Today's chip of the day is from Poipet Casino in Poipet, Cambodia. Poipet Casino is owned by the same company that owns Grand Diamond City where I was staying for the night. This is the casino where I came the next morning for my complimentary breakfast that came with my room. They didn't have BJ so I played a few hands of 100 minimum baccarat, I broke even after keeping a chip. I hate when I have to do this but the chip I kept isn't from Poipet Casino, it is from Koh Kong International Resort Club. Why is it so hard for a casino to use their own chips??? The Koh Kong Casino is still in business on the Thai border in Koh Kong, Cambodia. Luckily that casino (look it up on google maps) is so far away from anywhere I ever plan to be that I don't think that I will ever have to worry about collecting a chip from there.
The chip is black with 8 beige/red/beige edge inserts. The centre inlay is beige, red and blue with 8 black edge inserts. Have we ever had a chip where the inlay has edge inserts? The casino name and logo take up most of the centre inlay. The "2" is to indicate this is the second set of chips I assume?!?

Yes, this is much more like the situation I encountered so often in the Caribbean. Here is perhaps the most extreme example of the complications this causes in this thread: When I first visited the Seaport Casino in Aruba, I kept a $1 token from the blackjack game I played. Except the token said it was from the Alhambra Casino in the same town. I posted it as a CCotD but reported it as from the Alhambra, as it said on the token. I would have liked to have played at the Alhambra itself, but they didn't open their tables until after my ship left the port.
Later, I received a $1 Alhambra chip (not a token) as a gift from forum member JW17, who had visited Aruba and collected the chip in the real casino. I posted images of that chip here though not as a CCotD, since the casino had been covered in my earlier post.
About a year later, I visited the Divi Flamingo Casino on the nearby island of Bonaire. So what were they using as their $1 chips? Why the same $1 Alhambra chip design from Aruba that JW17 had sent to me! The tables were closed, but I purchased and kept one of those $1 Alhambra chips plus a $5 chip that had the real name of the casino were I obtained them.
On that same cruise, we stopped in Aruba again, and I went back to the Seaport Casino and collected a $1 Seaport chip to represent that casino in my collection. I posted that as a CCotD here.
I still haven't played at the Alhambra in Aruba, but I do have two $1 chips and a $1 token that have that casino's name on them.
Quote: Doc...I still haven't played at the Alhambra in Aruba, but I do have two $1 chips and a $1 token that have that casino's name on them.
Hehe... How many other casinos do you have three or more chips and tokens from? At this rate, you may start getting mail from them.
PokerGrinder covered the Casino de Mont-Tremblant in Quebec with a CCotD post. When I finally made it to that casino, I kept two chips and later posted images in this thread. At the time, I said, "That clover mold chip looks so plain that, while I did keep one, I picked up a $5 chip, too, as an extra." The $5 chip is displayed with the collection, with the ultra-plain $1 chip to the side along with the dozen tokens.
I also kept two identical $1 chips when I visited the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, WVa. At least at that time, entry to the casino was restricted to guests staying at the somewhat-expensive resort. I thought I could pass the second chip along to another collector who didn't want to pay the room tariff in order to add one more item to his/her collection, but each of the people to whom I have offered it either already had a chip from there or declined the gift because they only collect from places they have played.
City: Poipet, Cambodia
Casino: Tropicana Casino
Today's chip of the day is from the Tropicana Casino in Poipet, Cambodia. Sadly I have very little information about this casino except some memories that I think are from this casino. I'm not sure of that but I am going to go with it anyways. I played 100 BJ at Tropicana (I know that for sure) and got stuck a couple thousand Baht before eventually winning 1200. I was hungry and they had a food court looking area where you ordered what you wanted from the different stations. I went to one station, ordered and then tried to give them money. They declined and explained to me what to do, the problem with that is they weren't speaking English. I walked over to where they pointed (another food area) and tried to pay them, they also didn't want my money. A nice Thai man who was getting food asked me what I was trying to do (in English) and helped me. It turns out that you pay in the corner of the building outside of the food area before you go in, cause that makes sense (it doesn't). I thanked the man, paid for my food and sat down to eat.
The chip is black with 4 white/blue/white/blue/white edge inserts. I like how the 4 triangles frame the centre inlay, they make it look like the inlay is in a box. The centre inlay is yellow/white (possibly stained?) with the casino logo taking up most of the inlay. The denomination and "cash" are in red. If you zoom in around the edges of the centre inlay it looks like the chip has been burned or something like that. This was the least damaged chip that I could find while I played.
As a side point, does anyone know where the Tropicana name originated, at least as far as naming casinos? Did it start with the one near the south end of the strip in Las Vegas, or was there a Tropicana casino somewhere else before that?
Quote: DocI think it is interesting that this Tropicana chip provides no information at all as to the location of the casino -- not the city or even the country. To me, that makes it a bit challenging to guess the currency represented by the "100" denomination of the chip.

Doc,
I could easily be wrong. I think it started in Havana, Cuba, and the jet set brought the name back as a Caribbean theme. This would be 40s, maybe early 50s, before Castro.

There was a famous post Depression era nightclub in Cuba with that name. It eventually added a casino. It was mobbed up. In 1957, the casino in Las Vegas opened with the same name. It was also mobbed up for at least two decades. I don’t know if the same group skimmed both properties.

Thanks, folks! In spite of my age, I must be too young in my thinking/memory. I recall the news coverage of Castro's visit to New York in 1959 and (of course) the coverage of the Bay of Pigs fiasco. However, the Cuban nightclub and casino era had long gone away before I developed any interest in casinos, so the existence/possibility of a Havana Tropicana just slipped past my thinking.
On a perhaps-related topic, where did the Tropicana name originate for other items, like orange juice?

Today's chip of the day is from Lucky 369 Casino in Poipet, Cambodia. I have found no proof anywhere online that this casino exists, but I was there, so it must lol. I walked around the main casino area checking each casino to see if there were chips to collect. I got lucky and found a new casino that I hadn't heard of while researching, the Lucky 369. The casino was quite small but really fancy. I played 100 minimum baccarat and won a whopping 80 Baht over a few hands. I left because the old Asian guy who was betting a decent amount was getting annoyed that I was there. This casino had one of my favourite chips that I have collected, it was new and shiny.
The chip is red with 3 black/baby blue/black edge inserts. The centre inlay is shiny gold with a black border. The casino logo is blue and the denomination is in red.

According to Encyclopedia.com, the name was trademarked in 1949 by a Sicilian immigrant who was pioneering development of a "factory on a train" that produced fresh squeezed OJ on its way from Florida to New York... considering the mob influences in Cuba and Las Vegas around the same time, I am not surprised that Sicily and the Tropicana name are connected here too.

Today's chip of the day is from Star Vegas Casino in Poipet, Cambodia. This is the largest casino in Poipet, the casino opened in 2001 and is owned by Donaco International. I lost 1900 playing 100 minimum BJ. A couple things about this game, the dealer deals his own hand right to left instead of the normal left to right. It was very weird to see and I never did get used to it. The other weird thing which I don't think I have seen before was when I split I was given a card on both of my hands before I was allowed to act on the first one.
The chip is black with 8 sets of grey edge inserts. Every second set has a grey rectangle underneath it, the opposite inserts have the denomination under them. The centre inlay is white with the yellow casino logo and the denomination in red.
PS I still haven’t figured out how to display them.
Reminds me of the scene early in Ocean's 11, when Rusty (Brad Pitt) is trying to teach the young actors how to play poker and one of them can't seem to remember in which direction to deal the cards.Quote: PokerGrinder... the dealer deals his own hand right to left instead of the normal left to right. I could be wrong, but 3-6-9 combinations are always featured as premium mah jongg hands, paying extra. So that could be the origin of the casino name. Each suit (3 of them, bamboo, characters, dots or wheels) has 1 to 9 pips.

Casino: Winsor Casino
Today's chip of the day is from Winsor Casino in Poipet, Cambodia. Star Vegas was the last casino that I knew existed but I had one more that was possible. On google maps it said there was a casino called Star Paradise about 15 minutes into Poipet by foot. I walked over there (in the dark) and found a casino! It wasn't Star Paradise but Winsor Casino. Turns out that the casino is owned by the same company that owns Star Vegas so I assume this very nice new looking casino recently underwent a rebranding/renovation. I played 100 minimum BJ and won 500, the dealer dealt his hand out backwards just like at Star Vegas. The casino didn't use Winsor chips or even Star Paradise chips, no they used Star Complex chips! I just shake my head at this one because these are clearly brand new chips so why not get chips for the proper casino name?
The chip is black with 6 lime/red/lime edge inserts. The "100" that is printed around the chip 4 times is also lime green. The centre inlay is white with a lime border. Star Complex and their logo take up the top half of the inlay with the denomination in gold underneath it.

Casino: Ho Wah Genting Casino
Today's chip of the day is from Ho Wah Genting Casino in Poipet, Cambodia. This is the last casino that I visited in Poipet and as far as I could find on the internet it is supposed to be closed. After Winsor Casino I walked about 15 minutes further into town as I saw lights that looked like there was maybe a casino there. When I got there it turned out to an outdoor bar with a live band playing. I started the 30 minute walk back to the main drag. I got to the Crown Casino (or so I thought) and ducked in to avoid the heat figuring I would just walk the rest of the way inside. I didn't recognize the casino at all which was weird since I visited Crown earlier that day. It turns out that this casino was the Ho Wah Genting Casino. I played a couple hands of 200 minimum baccarat and won 60 Baht plus my chip. I walked out the same door as I could swear it said Crown Casino which it definitely did! I have no idea why as the buildings weren't connected and I couldn't find any information online to show that this casino is owned by Crown. Just weird but a lucky find that I'm happy with.
The chip is black with 3 sets of 3 light blue edge inserts. The centre inlay is white with a blue border. The Ho Wah Genting International logo (the casino that MoGH says is closed) is in red, with the casino name in black. Inside the logo you can see "THB" which stands for Thai Baht.
Quote: PokerGrinderBefore I made my latest chip of the day post I updated my chip list with all my new chips. I have collected a chip from 740 different casinos, from 11 countries. I also have chips in 9 currencies. Fun fact, I have a chip in Chinese Yuan but I’ve never been to China. I’ve been to casinos in Cambodia and Vietnam but I don’t have any chips in Riel or Dong.
PS I still haven’t figured out how to display them.
Put the in clear plastic boxes. Put those boxes on your dining room table. Works like a charm - everyone will ask what they are and why they're there.

Sounds great but then people will touch them and screw up the order?!?!?!!

Oh, God no. You don't open the boxes. That's why they're clear. If you were going to take the chips out, it would defeat the whole idea!

hehe...I’ll take your word for it, but others may want to see visual proof before they believe it.

Unfortunately, this post seems to be lacking a photo of that chip. Pending that image, I have not indexed this as a CCotD post.
(Ayecarumba posted while I was preparing this post.)
Edit: Now that the image has been added (thanks, PG), I have updated the index.

You guys are so picky. In my defence it was 1:30 am and I almost said screw it and went to bed. Instead you got most of a chip of the day, be happy lol.
