Quote: vert1276I have no idea....but if its not a joke, therefore not making fun of someone...how is it insulting?....you were the one saying its insulting so obviously you thought it was making fun of jews......so maybe I should ask you what the punchline is?
No it was a joke. It is just a bad one. Not like bad, it is HIGHLY offensive. Got much thicker skin than that. It just isn't a good joke, it just lacked any real content to be a good joke because it has a non sequitur based punchline. aka, it belongs on 4chan.
Alright boys, back on topic. So, Wikipedia!
Obviously, it was originally intended as an insult. For the record, this was the first time I have heard the phrase or of the website.Quote: P90It's how youtube has been called on the internets for a long while, with the implication that it's run by Media Jews who delete videos at the first hint of a complaint - which is a true one.
Was only a matter of time before someone capitalized on the alternate name, of course.
...or completely unrecognized as a joke.Quote: YoDiceRoll11A joke is either good, or it isn't.
Quote: DJTeddyBearObviously, it was originally intended as an insult.
Possibly, but if so, an insult towards Youtube. It's not my invention, it's how youtube is called in some parts of the internet. I only explained the implication behind the name (which is the only joke, not my explanation).
The implication that is true is that people running youtube delete videos at the first hint of a complaint. The rest is straightforward. Calling names like this are based on intentionally inflated and dated stereotypes and shouldn't really be taken seriously or overanalyzed.
Quote: MathExtremistWhat would you prefer YouTube/Google do? Not remove copyrighted content when requested to? Or is your chief complaint that content can be copyrighted at all?
Actually the current situation is fine with me. Only pointed out that it is already considered very quick to enforce copyright.
The complaint some people had is that youtube would not verify the allegations before removal, so many videos would be taken down even if not actually in violation.
Quote: thecesspitDeleted post. Pointless addition by myself.
I was just about to say the same thing.
So people call it that, why repeat it and make yourself look like an insensitive dumbass? I infer from your past posting that you are not that. I'm sure you won't do it in the future.Quote: P90Possibly, but if so, an insult towards Youtube. It's not my invention, it's how youtube is called in some parts of the internet. By the way, it is not a joke. I can't see any person in the world, even the most rampant Neo-Nazi, doubling up with laughter upon hearing "JewTube .... !?! Oh my god, that is the funniest, most clever changing of one letter I've ever heard in my life!"
Quote: teddysSo people call it that, why repeat it and make yourself look like an insensitive dumbass?
It can only look that way to people with low familiarity with the internet culture. The term is hardly so edgy as for the very mention of its existence to be worth taking offense to.
I mentioned it because it was relevant. Perhaps my explanation of its etymology was ambiguous and could have been misread as affirming not only video deletion, but the entire chain of thought, which could indeed be considered offensive. If so, I apologize. Just in case, spoilered below is a more clear (but clumsier) wording.
It's how youtube has been called on the internets for a long while, the name implying that it's controlled by media moguls (then playing on their stereotypical association with Jews and resulting phonetic similarity) and professing that as the reason for videos being deleted upon any complaint of copyright violation without verifying the allegations. Such deletions seem to indeed be the observed policy of youtube administration.
Quote: teddysI can't see any person in the world, even the most rampant Neo-Nazi...
No, it wouldn't be funny to a neonazi. Neonazis are extremely unpopular where the term has originated and would likely be offended by it.
This term is aimed against Youtube alone. It has as much to do with ethnicity as "the man" referring to the gov't has to do with gender.
It hardly warranted such a lengthy derailment though.
Quote: P90SOPA isn't just another law. It's the ultimate "Guilty until proven innocent" stamp for online interactions.
Never before have major websites, from relative small-timers like Reddit and Scribd to mainstays such as Wikipedia and Google, staged such an act of protest. It's a first, because the legislation is a first in voiding all tenets of due process at any accusation of copyright infringement.
Which is why I think there are probably a number of people waiting outside of Federal courthouses (especially those in the 9th Circuit region) for the law to pass so they can get an injunction. IANALBIALOOTI (I Am Not A Lawyer But I Act Like One On The Internet), but I have a feeling this is going to end with a Supreme Court opinion along the lines of, "You thought Reno v. ACLU (which struck down the CDA) was a case of 'burning down the house to roast the pig'? This wants to burn down the entire planet!".
One of the more interesting protests : http://twitpic.com/88ueqz (Cliff Notes : one of the writers of SOPA has a website with a "pirated" image on it).
Quote: EvenBobI said 1900 because ethnic humor was paramount. I
have a book somewhere written in 1902 titled '500
Modern Jokes' and 80% them are about kikes, wops,
pollocks, N-word, and so on. Jokes about black people
stealing chickens and watermelons were apparently
hilarious, the book is full of them. These jokes were
state of the art a hundred years ago, knee slappingly
funny. Reading them now they're almost meaningless.
Take it easy on the pollocks. They have a tough life trying to compete with the haddock, cod and salmon.
