My ex-wife's suffering from a bit of a mid-life crisis and she and my daughter's moved away to northern California. My job is such that I could live anywhere in North America and maintain my job. So, I have a choice to live close again to my daughter (only to have her pick up and move again) or to live somewhere where my daughter can easily fly or drive to (no connections). I live in Niagara Falls.
Vancouver is our place where we want to retire, but housing prices are through the roof and is unaffordable so we want to save alot of money and buy a house in Vancouver in a few years.
For Nevada, our choices would be Vegas or Reno. Vegas has Summerlin and Henderson to live in, where crime is low. Both have incredible housing deals. Casinos are not a worry as they are everywhere and we would not become gambling derelicts. From Vegas, you can fly anywhere in North America pretty much directly. Reno has Tahoe next door and it's a couple of hour drive away from my daughter, but appears to be more sketchy from a crime perspective than Vegas, plus it gets a bit of snow and a lot more wind apparently.
Opinions? Insight? I've read that Henderson / Summerlin's a bit of a coin toss. I've been to Reno a few times and will be spending most of the remainder of September there. Are conditions changing in Henderson / Summerlin for the worst? I've heard conflicting views.

I'd take Vegas for two reasons:
1. I HATE SNOW. Period. Never missed it when I lived in AZ. Not once. Lived in WNY for many years. No snow is easy to get used to, believe me.
2. Vegas is a bigger market. I heard what you said about your job, but I can say that bigger markets matter, within reason. Phoenix had ten times the opportunity of Rochester.
And in Vegas there is a good chance the Wizard will tell you where to get good wings.
That is my input.

I moved to Las Vegas two years ago from Washington State, and if I had to do it again, I'd pick Reno. I had visited both towns (and Tahoe) at least 8 times before moving, but I think Reno would've offered more of a full life. You'll get used to the heat in Vegas no problem, but any outdoor activities you may have had aren't really possible here due to the heat. Golf? Sure, but forget tennis (tough in 110 degrees), skiing or hiking/camping. It's desert hiking with no water available on the trail. The town is totally flat so biking is a breeze if that's your exercise of choice.
Reno has all the seasons and Tahoe is one of the prettiest spots in the country. Vegas is surrounded by brown treeless mountains, so this ain't no Tahoe. If gambling is your primary reason for this move, you can do that anywhere, and Vegas doesn't offer much more. Coming from Niagara Falls will be culture shock for you and Reno would lessen your imminent depression.

Reno is a total ghost town, a lot of the CA indian casinos killed it. The area is beautiful, but I would suggest living in Truckee, CA. That has all the beauty of Lake Tahoe while being close to Reno if you wanted to gamble.

Does anyone know anything about Boulder City?
All I know is that it's the only place in Nevada where you can't gamble. Soon it may be the only place in the US as well. :)
