LAS VEGAS -- A racial comment in the restroom of a Las Vegas Strip casino restroom preceded a single fatal punch that left a tourist from Utah dead and a Florida tourist jailed in Nevada on a murder charge, authorities said Wednesday.
The slaying was the third on the Las Vegas Strip in less than two weeks, including the stabbings of a 21-year-old man Monday on a pedestrian walkway between casinos and the another 21-year-old Las Vegas man in a pre-dawn confrontation June 25.

Possibly, but its much more likely that the back of his head hit the sink or something. Had the altercation taken place fifteen feet away, there would be a carpet and no sinks nearby. Manslaughter in the restroom, disorderly conduct fifteen feet away. Such is life ... and death!

The story suggested that the white guy (victim) said something about the perp (black guy), referring to him as "that black guy in the yellow shirt." I don't know too many black people who would say this was racist, let alone be incensed enough to punch someone. What part of the story are we not hearing?

Apparently the middle aged white guy from Utah said said something to the big black guy from Florida about his yellow shirt, and middle aged guy got hit in the side of the head and died. Now the big guy gets to be a guest of NV state for at least 20 years, I'm guessing.

I'm not condoning any type of racist remarks, and the news report
doesn't mention one. But so what ? Look at this horrible outcome.

Another pointless death. This is murder, maybe not pre-meditated,
but murder nonetheless.

I don't blame the victim for his shallow gene pool. The fault for having a family tree that resembles a totem pole lies squarely on the narrow mal formed shoulders of his parents who are also his aunt, uncle, cousin and possibly grandad. Clearly, he should not have been punched in the soft tissue that is his skull. The "perp" should go to jail!

I really don't know what to think about this situation. The person who died incited the incident, apparently with hate speech. But he also, you know, DIED. The person who killed threw one punch, and almost certainly didn't intend to cause death. But he definitely killed a man. That just sucks all around.

If you can't read through the politically-correct lines of "...the black man in the yellow shirt." to see what word(s) might have been used, then I really just don't know what to say.

Then you have no facts by your own statement. "what words might have been used" I am supposed to imagine what was said?

The only reports that I have been able to find that the victim used racial statements were based on statements from the attacker. I choose not to believe anything this violent person says in an attempt to justitfy his actions.

We have beat this topic to death. You were not the poster I was referring to that is so full of hate. Anyone that read the earlier posts know exactly who I am talking about.

That was a direct quote, according to the AP reporter. Referring to a black man in a yellow shirt as a black man in a yellow shirt isn't racist, any more than referring to a white man in a red tank-top as a white man in a red tank-top would be. Besides, under the laws of this country, I don't have the legal right to kill you with a blow to the head regardless of any dirty, vile, profane, insulting or offensive words or sounds you direct at me. The only exception might be if you were aiming a sonic weapon at me and I had to kill you in self-defense. Otherwise, the kindergarten chant "sticks and stones" would seem to apply.

And what is wrong with Utah? Seems like a state that causes no problems for the rest of the country, low crime, carries its weight, and has a fairly decent economy going for itself. Other than the snow and cold seems like a nice place to live.

I've never walked into a restroom and commented on someone's race. I've probably not walked into any room, ever, and commented on the race of a stranger.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but my first thought, on reading this, was to wonder whether the Utah guy (victim) made his living suing people and was trying to get hit. Only way the racial comment to a (presumably much larger) stranger makes sense.

The article I read said he was punched outside the bathroom and death was caused by blunt force trauma to the head when he struck the ground.

Sounds normal for a one punch death... catch the victim in the right way, they go down like a sack of spuds and smash their head on the ground.

I'm constantly amazed how little it takes to kill a person and yet on the other hand the amount of punishment a person can take and survive.

Probably won't be a murder charge, normally these go to manslaughter (proving intent would be hard.. not to say that prosecutors haven't proven malice in many cases with tenuous reason before, and defenders have argued against intent when the over whelming evidence would suggest otherwise)...

I don't make it a habit to talk to anyone in a restroom I don't know. Some people are weird about speaking or being spoken to when their genitals are outside of their pants, so I respect their special "me time." I wonder if they had a run-in at a craps table or blackjack table earlier in the evening that may have escalated on their chance run-in in the restroom?

I'd like a toxicology report on both of them, as well. It sounds like they were both at fault, but certainly not "someone should die" fault (obviously). Whether or not the white guy used a racial slur, it's still a sad situation. One man is dead, and another man is going to prison. No one wins there

It was a tragic death and has nothing to do with any generalities to the race of the attacker or gang activity. In this case, the teacher (where's MKL?) punched the man in the jaw in the food court area of O'Sheas (the altercation started in the bathroom). Had the man not died, the man would have simply spent overnight in jail with an assault charge. But this man was unlucky, and probably had too much to drink. Hawkins will not be going to jail for a great length of time, and they'll reduce the charge to manslaughter for sure.

What I can say is that when you are in a big city with alot of people don't know each other, it's late at night, and there's drinking, your risk factors go up alot. This is the third homocide in the middle of the strip (O'Sheas, walkway between MGM Grand, and NYNY, and the walkway between Planet Hollywood and the Cosmopolitan) in a couple of weeks. This is bad news for Vegas.

Advice: if you can't handle your alcohol, don't drink alot in Vegas. In any case, when you're in public places, you gotta keep your wits around you and don't do or say anything stupid.

It appears that "black" is what was said and that it is not a euphemism for what is referred to in a politically correct manner as the "N-word".
The arrestee claims he threw the first punch due to his fear of turning around and walking away though it is not shown why he could not have simply backed up and then turned around at a safe distance.
He appears rather muscular and therefore must know how hard he can punch.
He may have found an "egg shell" victim but it is more likely that he simply punched someone out and it will be a manslaughter charge in which he claims "self defense" from "expected attack" instead of "hatred of whitey" or something.

Heck, in a week of knives and guns... atleast this was his fist.
Of course in a week of pedestrian bridges and sidewalks, this was inside the resort structure itself.
Robberies are common in bathrooms in Vegas partly because everyone knows there are no cameras but there are drunk and rich victims. However, since he was a tourist it would seem he is not likely to be a career thief.

This story is featured in today's Las Vegas Advisor - Question Of The Day.

If you want to read the whole thing, read it today, because non-members can only read the current Q.O.D.

It is a well written piece. Due to copyrights, I'll only post a portion of the first paragraph.
Quote: Q.O.D.

The 11-day period commencing June 25 turned out to be uncharacteristically violent for the Las Vegas Strip...
...
isolated events that took place between individuals with personal grievances and agendas, as opposed to being random killing sprees.
...
but it would appear that their proximity was a coincidence and not indicative of any underlying trend of escalating violence on the Strip.

The casinos fear public perceptions and don't really care too much whether they are accurate perceptions or are misperceptions. The headlines about a killing inside a casino are damaging. Oh, the concern will pass, but even if the headlines read "coincidence" and "happen anywhere" ... its not good for business.

Yeah, casino full of drunken frat-rats, but beer pong brings in a million dollars a year easy. I just meant to emphasize that this started in the rest room and continued outside the rest room area but no where near the sidewalk area outside the casino. Therefore it has a different public relations impact than these recent crimes that were on pedestrian crossways and sidewalk areas.

Many in Vegas don't even use the name O'Sheas they refer to it as O'Sxxxx.
