I'm caught in a decision whether to learn no limit or limit texas holdem? I am disciplined enough to learn the games i play fully before going out risking money like a lot of players lack. They instead watch T.V. thinking they learned the game and end up losing. Basically I'm going to read up on whatever game I choose to play and I wont step into my local casino to play until probably mid to late july. I'm only pointing and repointing out I turn the games i choose to play inside and out before even playing. So its not like im going to head on over to play tommorow and not have a clue.

Is Limit or No Limit Holdem better and WHY?

Book learning only goes so far. Your discipline will be rewarded in limit hold'em. The decisions are more clear. As your bankroll increases step up the limits. Remember your decisions are based not only on your cards but also the players you are facing.
All too often in a casino setting ypu will be playing against players you have not seen before

You asked almost the identical question in this thread:
https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/gambling/poker/4999-limit-vs-no-limit-holdem/

I stand by my statements in that thread: LIMIT Poker is better for a beginner.

Read all the books on juggling, each and every one. Then get 1 bowling ball, 1 bowling pin, 2 baseballs, and a running chain saw and start juggling them successfully. Same chance as winning at No-Limit by just book reading !!

saginaw10,

I agree with the people that replied already. No matter how much you read, the best way to learn the game and get better is by playing. Here are my two cents:

No Limit Hold'em:
Any given hand, you may lose your entire stack.. or double up.
You are able to receive good implied odds to draw out

Limit Hold'em:
Hard to protect your hand (a player with a hand which would have been folded by a large bet in NL Hold'em, can call all the way down because it is a fixed limit on how much his/her liability will be)
Much harder to bluff... So more luck is needed to catch cards in rake in pots.
--------------
My overall view on poker. Long run, it is all luck. Sure, there will be occasional fishes at the table that will simply be giving money away.... but when it gets down to it.. the person that wins money during a session is just the guy that got lucky that day.

Playing NL-Hold'em... people generally get a big score.. or they lose their entire stack.
Playing Limit Hold'em.. either going to win a little.. or lose entire stack. With the rake, it is extremely hard to come ahead playing Limit Hold'em.

If you must play, go with NL Hold'em.... but while learning the game.. I recommend that you start playing Fixed Limit.. then play a spread limit (if they offer it where you play) then move on the NL

Anybody can get lucky once in a while. But good poker players win much more than just lucky players.
Now if they lose that money on other ventures or piss it away on cocaine, that is a different story.
Say it's all lick is like saying hitting a baseball in the big leagues is all luck. One guy gets 2 hits in 10 at bats,
another gets 3 hits in 10 at bats. Unless the first guy is a pitcher he will not stay in the big leagues. The 300
hitter can wind up in the hall of fame. The 200 hitter can go 4 for 4 the same day the 300 hitter goes 0 for 4.
That is just one day.
"My overall view on poker. Long run, it is all luck. " is just not true !

I play no limit in tournaments and limit for cash. You can have lots of fun that way without losing a lot of cash in a very short time!
I am going to win the World Series of Poker!! (someday)

I play no limit online with fake money. Not sure where to find limit Hold'Em online with fake money. Wouldn't mind trying it though. Anybody know a good website for that?
