So at my recent stay at the Mirage, my host confessed to me (she said she wasn't supposed to tell me this) that the casino comps back to the player 40% of the hold that they make off of each game the player plays. I don't know how many of you are familiar with the new comp system but there's a new thing called "Express Comps", and so, according to her, they give back 25% of that hold as primary comps (not sure if that's the right word or not) and 15% as express comps. (But you still go see them person to person in regards to the other 25%).

Basically the casinos wanted to make the comping system easier and save more on labor by allowing players to be able to comp themselves. So when I use my Player's card at the tables, they enter in my play at some point into the computer. The difference now is that instead of having to go to the host to get them to comp you for everything, 15% of the hold is available to use at the shops, restaurants, etc. in the casino directly through your card. So you basically use it like a credit card by swiping it for payment.

The question I have, and I did ask her but she said that she could not tell me, is how do they determine what the hold is on the particular game I'm playing? She told me that the it's different whether I'm playing blackjack vs. craps vs. any other type of game. So, if I'm sitting and playing at a blackjack table that has a 2.7% house edge, and I play 60 hands an hour at $100 per hand, do they calculate it using the 2.7% house edge on that one table, or do they just have a standard number that they use regardless of what blackjack table you sit at? And if it's just a standard number, does this change from casino to casino?

Does anyone have any specific "insider" knowledge here? Lol.

Oh and also if anyone knows what the hold is for the other games too, such as craps, please let me know.

I just found that the Wizard said
Quote: WizardofOdds.com

"2% is generally considered the house edge in blackjack for the average player."

in regards to a question someone had about calculating comps. This was written on Aug. 7, 2003 and I'm wondering if that figure still applies nowadays and whether that number was just a roundabout guesstimation.
