Quote: DocI didn't vote. My attractions to Las Vegas are that it is a fairly cheap place for lodging (even compared to most podunk towns) and that there is something entertaining to see and do almost anywhere you turn. I enjoy the table games, but I can get them closer to home. I enjoy the shows, but I can see similar ones not too far from home. There are some fantastic sights not far away (Hoover dam, Death Valley, Grand Canyon), but Niagara Falls and Mammoth Cave aren't too shabby either. I have no use for the strip clubs there or anywhere else, and there are shopping malls not far from most anywhere I might travel. To me, the draw is that I can get most any kind of entertainment I might want, all in or near one town, if I visit Las Vegas, and there I don't spend a third of my budget on a hotel room.
Ditto- It is the combination of weather, attractions, 24 hour a day options, free rooms, good food, good shows, that brings me there. I can get one or two of the others anywhere, but Vegas combines them all.
For me, the other reasons are sightseeing in general and conventions.
The conventions are organized by people that believe Vegas' gambling and/or sightseeing makes it a good location for the convention.
So I guess the real reason is sightseeing.
Of course, my next trip will most likely be for G2E 2011, to promote my Poker For Roulette side bet. And THAT is the biggest gamble I've ever made....
1. To show friends or relatives who haven't been there (or, been there much) around town, and to help them find the best deals, the best places to stay and eat, etc. I just finished giving three friends the grand tour between Xmas and New Year's. They had a blast.
2. To make money. If there are some good promos available, and I have enough free play offers, free rooms, etc. to make the trip +cash flow, I'll do it.
3. To find a good poker game. The waters have been pretty much fished out; no-limit hold'em kills the suckers much faster and much more thoroughly than limit ever did, and most of them didn't came back. Therefore, you need a large game selection, and besides Vegas, Southern CA is the only place to find an abundance of games--but the rake in SoCal is completely ridiculous--those games are unwinnable. So I go to Vegas every year during "tournament time"--May/June. The place is already a blast furnace by then, and it's just about perfect in places like Yosemite and Yellowstone, so in recent years i've played for about two weeks, taken my money, and gotten the hell out, to go camping someplace nice.
Because Its Vegas. It has an atmosphere nowhere else has.

I'm with Croupier in picking "all of the above". I play the same games in Vegas that I do here in Niagara. But there are shows, food, and energy that comes with the Strip that can't be replicated anywhere else.
