Just because of the name change?
Yes and no. It has nothing to do with the name change and everything to do with the edge design.Quote: FTBJust because of the name change?
Casinos can change their chips as they seem fit as long as the post notice and provide a redemption period (180 days?) after the change.
Once the redemption period ends, they’re worthless.
Of course, since there wasn’t an ownership change, they could have just issued the new chips using the same old edge patterns, and allowed the old chips to continue to be used.
But there are reasons for doing it other than merely the free money from people who have the old chips.

Length of time varies by casino/jurisdiction. As someone who’s frequently had a chip inventory I’ve had to deal with this a few times. I think 90-180 days most common, I believe Ameristar STL have longer than that when they switched to boyd but I still had a random green chip expire. Viejas near San Diego tried to put one over on people with a 30 day window either 2018 or 2019. 30 days is dirty in my opinion for both that and slot tickets.
