Poverty was generally trending downward during Obama's presidency, and as we saw above, unemployment went down every single year. This is hilarious because they're tacitly admitting that there is something seriously damaging to Trump in his tax returns. If they were straight-up normal above-the-board tax returns, there would be zero political gain to the Democrats if they were released, and in fact would probably hurt Democrats if the returns were released and there was nothing wrong with them.
The fact that they're trying to keep them under lock and key is pretty damning and indicative of Trump having something to hide.
EDIT: On the other hand, it's also possible that Trump's tax returns are fine and he's hiding them as a hail mary play before the next election. He'll release them at the last minute, everyone will see there's nothing wrong, and Trump is banking on that to give him a slight boost in popularity to win re-election. Trump is pretty stupid, though, so I really don't think this is what he's planning.

I was thinking about this also.
Yes, you would have to both give Trump credit for clever planning instead of being rash and kneejerky, AND also that he's some sort of admirable businessman which normal moral people admire.

Yeah, no. Every President since 1974 has voluntarily released tax returns filed in office, and several Presidents before that released multiple years of returns. Obama released 16 years of tax returns from 2000 to 2015. Bush Jr. released returns from 2000 to 2007. Check out that website. You can download actual Presidential tax returns.
Trump is hiding something. He has no reason not to release them otherwise. If they were clean it would completely embarrass the Democrats and many of his critics, including me, probably.

If Trump released his tax returns immediately, and then immediately demanded that Congress releases theirs, he would probably gain 20 points in popularity overnight. But he is not going to do that, because he has something to hide.
There shouldn't be a single American that has a problem with every elected official in Washington releasing tax returns filed while in office, and during their campaigns.
