The real Wizard

I've pretty much left the forum, but I was cleaning out my hard disk and found this old voicemail from the Wizard from 2008, which I thought shows just how much math is a part of his life.

For posterity, the file was created 2/27/08, and I'm not sure how much time elapsed between my getting the voicemail and making the file, but in any event, it's likely that we're very close to the ten-year anniversary of this message.

"This is the Wizard. I got Paul's message, and it's unclear to me if you guys want to be picked up, so I guess I'm asking if you want to be picked up, and if so, your best estimate [of] when you will want to be picked up, and I understand it's a random variable, and I'm just looking for the mean and maybe a standard deviation of that random variable. Thanks."

Yeah, odiousgambit, the audio was in the February 27, 2008 newsletter, which the Wizard approved before I sent it out, so I knew that he didn't object to it being made public.

I was hoping you saw the light about how much better America is under President Trump and you were busy working on his re-election campaign.

But seriously you should stick around, everyone has a unique view to add and while I disagree with you on almost everything, the forum is a better place with you posting.

I'm fine with it, although redacted a name mentioned in it. As MBJ mentioned, he also included the actual recording in an old newsletter, which I approved.

For what it's worth, I think people who know me will say I'm usually not that bad as the message makes me appear. I'd like to think I've mellowed out a bit since I left it.

I doubt you were ever that bad, but think you were trying to be funny.

Whether not you were successful is an entirely different question.

Gave me a laugh. Having hung with the Wiz a several times now, he isn't that bad in my experience. I think he probably took of the filters in that message, dealing with a like minded (enough) person.

I also miss your contributions Michael. But I get it if posting on the forum is -ev for you. I've left a couple online communities that were no longer fun for me, but I still like to poke my head in and say "hi." Hope you do the same.
