I used to have your disease. A few years ago I finally came to grips with the fact that 486-chipset motherboards and 1200 baud modems are trash, not treasures. Technology marches on, and yesterday's cutting-edge equipment should be deposited in the dustbin. Just convinced my parents to replace their old tip/ring, twisted-copper landline with digital service piggy-backed on their Internet connection. I didn't confuse them with the technical details. Instead, I just highlighted the monetary savings and the fact that their telephone number would not change. That's all they need or want to know.

Already tried that. Te both wont go for it.

I heard you can trade in old cell pones for credit or something. Occasionally someone needs a cell and the ones that still work I will let them have one.

I keep old laptops as well.

People abandoned LPs in droves when tape came out, then really left the fold when audio went digital.

Funny thing though, vinyl is making a minor resurgence.

Audiophiles realize that the BEST sound comes from the grooves of LPs, not from tape or CD.

That's because our hearing is analog not the square harmonics of digital. Analog sound is far warmer on a decent high end HiFi system than any digital setup. CD's are easier to handle than vinyl, skip to the next track, change volume via a remote, but who buy's CD's anymore, it's all MP3 and FLAC files.

In Mexico City there's a "recycling amrket" held every few months, where you can trade in old electronics for produce :)

What you can do is keep the newest old cell phone as a backup for your current one if it should get lost or damaged.

Did they even have phones then? That's just another example of one of your ridiculous statements. That's like saying real men don't spend much time on internet forums, I'm sure my dad might say that. People have legitimate reasons including, Business, large family's, lots of friends.

Business is different. Family is to see, and for the
women to talk to on the phone. I have nothing to
say to friends on the phone, why would I. I see
them when I see them. Certain kinds of men love
talking on the phone, chattering for hours and hours.

I'm not one of those.

Yup, and it drives her nuts that I have no phone
that's turned on. She's used to it, though, and rarely
even mentions it now. When cells came out she
always got me a phone on her contract. I said
phooey on that and got my own TracFone for
emergencies only. She never wants anything except
endless chatter, which I won't abide.

If you really want a phone for emergencies only (ie, 911 calls) you don't even need a plan, just a phone. Even with no sim card or plan, you can make an emergency call.
