at md live, every comment i read about their comp system is that it sucks. (im one of them.)
people want comps.

I (we) are sheep. a free buffet shouldn't matter if you're gambling $1000 each time you're there. you can easily afford the $15.99.

At mgm vegas, i lost $500 in BJ. i asked for a buffet comp and got it. that $20 comp made me feel a lot better about losing $500.
plus i had a more positive outlook for MGM in general.

so what casinos have this 'bad games for the players but good comps' strategy?
ie: 6/5 blackjack, 2x odds in craps, 8/5 JoB as best VP, state minimum payout for slots, etc

or does this strategy not work? if so, why (since people love comps)?

Binion's has bad video poker, but the slot club is nearly 1%, split unevenly between cash and comps.

It's difficult to compare because some properties are generous if you ask correctly. There's a long tradition of secrecy about comp balances.

People love " free stuff' and often dont think of the real cost of getting the "free" stuff.

I dont lnow if they still do this, but I remember as a kid, local banks had something called "christmas clubs: It forces you to put away 5-10 dollars a week or more so when christmas came u had some money put away to buy gifts. So you get a coupon book with the dollar amount on each coupon page..and you pull out the coupon and give it to the teller with your money each week.(back then walking into a bank once or twice a week was common). You get no interest....but you do get a free gift to start off...like a travel alarm clock or a piggy bank for a kid. (if you failed to pay off all the coupons they deduct the cost of the gift from your withdrawl. And the amount they deduct is the full retail price(just as a 20 dollar buffet might cost the company 6 dollars in real cost.....the 4 dollar travel alarm was valued as 20 as well).

So the bank made out well...they didnt pay interest on the money....they get you to tie up your money for a while...and if you break the contract....and dont see it through till the end..they make a profit on the "free item".....which really wasnt "free" to begin with.

Same with casinos. They know the public in general is into "free" no matter what the consequences

free alcohol is great because its free..even though the consequences are depression of decision making, and discipline
free buffet is great even if the BJ pays 6/5 or the slots pay less

Wave sometbhing tangible in front of someones face like food or alcohol or a travel alarm clock....and they are hooked.

The entire city of Deadwood, SD is built on great comps and promos with games that are awful. The best VP game in town is 8/5 JOB and most VP machines do not qualify for point multiplier specials. On the other hand, the cash back is very high and so are promotions.

The blackjack games do not allow surrender or RSA. Most are H17. The ones that S17 don't let you double any two cards.

I think the players expect promos even though they know they are getting fleeced.

I was under the impression all casinos are already going this way eventually with great Comps only temporary. People just want to live in total fantasy land when it comes to casinos. Offers so outrageous on the surface then the people wonder why they lose every trip.
I am a robot.

From what I can tell, if you are the type of person to be seduced totally by comps ... not just 'like' them ... then to move up to where you have a host catering to you ... that becomes true addiction.
the next time Dame Fortune toys with your heart, your soul and your wallet, raise your glass and praise her thus: “Thanks for nothing, you cold-hearted, evil, damnable, nefarious, low-life, malicious monster from Hell!”   She is, after all, stone deaf. ... Arnold Snyder

um..er.. I goto the casino when they have promos, even bad promos like free cherry pie on presidents day.
Drive 1hr each way on a mon for a cherry pie.
um..er..

and the reason I don't care about a host is that I had one at the Vegas Hilton. she was nice but got nothing special that I valued that I couldn't get from normal mailings from the marketing dept.

if it weren't for that...

hm..

um..er..

Gee Larry. Next you bring back memories of green stamps, or getting free dishes or glasses for buying gasoline. The one that gets me is buy one pair, get one pair 50% off at shores. People love it. Turn their noses up at a 30% off sale.
