the reasoning behind limiting carb intake is that they are filling and cheap.
if you are paying for all you can eat,
you want to focus your attention on the expensive meats and seafoods.
why load up on rice, bread or pasta when paying premium prices?
i do save a little room for dessert, but those are the only carbs i eat.

Thought that might be it, though as I like crab legs I never worried much about it. I usually skip the salad altogether then do 3 small-medium trips for the meal, then 2-3 for the desert. Desert is my favorite part as I love a bite of this and a bite of that. Yes, I know they are small to limit costs. But I love the "a few bites" concepts, so why not.

Leave a personal item on the table. I use a baseball cap, if i was wearing it, or my cheap reading glasses, if I was not.

I like the baseball hat idea. I'm gonna use it. Thanks!

Here is one other hint, though probably more for information than usefulness. Ar Rivers they have some kind of signal set uf between drink-runners (not a waitress, I get the food!) and busboys. They move the salt shakers or something, signaling the diner has left. I found out because I moved something for some reason and it was such that I triped the "signal" so the gal tol me very nicely what I did.

That sounds like an example of sunk costs thinking. Why make yourself eat what you don't particularly want just because it's more expensive, if what you want is a pasta dish? If these place served sushi rolls, would you strip away the rice before eating?

The thinking should go "why pay premium prices if what you want can be had cheaper", but once it's paid, it's a sunk cost, doesn't matter anymore.

AYCE is something I hate about America. We're becoming fatter and fatter, and this encourages you to eat MORE. Everybody seems to want MORE. Yes I try to eat more than I want to get my money's worth, but I don't completely stuff myself. I had a $30 buffet once that included lobster tails, crab legs and shrimp cabobs. I ate a few handfuls of shrimp, plus maybe 5 lobster tails. I skipped the crab legs cause I hate the hassle of breaking em open.

I also don't eat desert because I don't care much for sweets.

The problem isn't AYCE, the problem is that Americans treat "All you can eat" as a challenge.

I probably eat less at a buffet than at most US restaurants. I say American restaurants, because portions there tend to be bigger than in Mexico. Anyway, years of very early parental pressure make it difficult for me to leave any food on my plate. Partly because of that, I tend to pile on smaller portions when i serve myself. If I want more, I can get more. Besides, for me buffets are about variety, not quantity.

When I hit a buffet with someone else, only one of us goes back to the buffet at a time while one remains behind at the table.
When I'm alone, I read a paper or book and it's spread over the table with my dirty plate off to the side for pick up.
When I finally leave for good, the dirty plate stays with a crumpled napkin on it, and a tip is under my iced tea glass.
