I'll give 1000-1. At least I'm out of the tsunami zone, and Vegas is not on a major fault line, so hopefully I'll survive the day. I'll be sure to stay away from cemeteries, so that I don't fall in any graves that open up.

Q: What will take place on May 21?
A: On May 21, 2011 two events will occur. These events could not be more opposite in nature, the one more wonderful than can be imagined; the other more horrific than can be imagined.
A great earthquake will occur the Bible describes it as "such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great." This earthquake will be so powerful it will throw open all graves. The remains of the all the believers who have ever lived will be instantly transformed into glorified spiritual bodies to be forever with God.
On the other hand the bodies of all unsaved people will be thrown out upon the ground to be shamed.
The inhabitants who survive this terrible earthquake will exist in a world of horror and chaos beyond description. Each day people will die until October 21, 2011 when God will completely destroy this earth and its surviving inhabitants.

I've heard for 2000 years, but wasn't around to know for sure.
1) In the 70s there was supposed to be a planetary alignment, which would for some reason sink California into the ocean, among other things. For this there was an outlandish, missinterpreted scientific hypothesis to base the fad upon. i can talk about it detail if anyone's interested.
2) In the 80s Halley's comet somehow would destroy the Earth. At least in 1910 the Earth would pass through the comet's tail. What was the flimsy excuse this time? I never learned
3) In the 80s also many people believed nucelar war was imminent.
4) Y2K in the 90s. That was real, but highly missunderstood. Since there are some users here more knowledgeable than I about computers, maybe you know why if a pentagon computer determined the date to be Jan 1st 1900, nuke-tipped missiles would fly.
5) This year some nonsense about the Mayan calendar running out in 2012. This one has me stumped.
That's all they are: fads.

Maybe is the Mayan version of the Y2K bug.
Either that, or the Mayans thought they would be around to finish the calendar some point in the future, and didnt feel the need to write out more than 2000 years in advance.
You may (or may not) recall, one of the biggest reported Y2K problems was that the slot machines at Dover Downs (Delaware) stopped working.Quote: EvenBobY2K had more credence than this pantload, and remember how that turned out.

Quote: NareedOff the top of my head, I recall the follwoing "THE WORLD'S GOING TO END" fads:

FINALLY I get my zombie apocalypse! And they say this is a bad thing? Gonna sleep with the shotgun so I can get an early start in the morning. =)

Difference is, I've seen a y2k bug... But never seen an end of times one. There's also the 2038 bug (I think that's the right year) when the Unix calendar runs out. Unix counts the number of seconds since Jan 1st 1970. Lots of systems use unix, and the date runs out of bits to store the seconds arond then. No doubt it'll be solved or a non issue by then.
The mayan 2012 nonsense is almost the same thing... The cycle ends (according to some who are making it up from what I can tell), December 20th,2012. Except the Mayans dealt with this and have a larger count above their normal cycle to count this tick over. There's no explicit written down 'this is the end', just the equivalent of us using 99 to show a year. There is one example of the Mayans predicting the end of the universe though... Which works out to be trillions of years away, well after most cosmological models predict the heat death of the universe. Maybe they did know something after all....
The early Christians thought that JC's return was imminent too. No doubt other religions implicty or explicitly fed off the disaster coming as well.

Back in the late 90s, I'd sometimes joke that even solving the Y2K bug would do nothing to prevent the Y3K bug :P
Quote:Either that, or the Mayans thought they would be around to finish the calendar some point in the future, and didnt feel the need to write out more than 2000 years in advance.
A calendar is a tool to keep track of time and/or the seasons. Nothign more. Errors in a calendar can cause problem. Correcting those errors can also cause problems. But minor, transitory problems, far from the end of the world. The analogy is the world ended when your watch's battery died, because time no longer passed...

Well, moving to a four-digit system to handle years to solve the Y2K bug implies that there wouldn't be a Y3K bug. However, it does imply that there will be a Y10K bug.
Quote: konceptumWell, moving to a four-digit system to handle years to solve the Y2K bug implies that there wouldn't be a Y3K bug.
That was the joke. Many people didn't get it.
Quote:However, it does imply that there will be a Y10K bug.
I should think if that be so, it will prove easier to fix than Y2K.
BTW Y2K was a real problem. we had tho upgrade our software not to keep it going, but to be able to print invoices, reports, etc with the right date. That was the extent of my troubles.
I also read a few reports of people being issued credit cards with an expiration date like 10/00 in the late 90s, only to be told their cards had expired 97 years ago (they expired, BTW, before credit cards even existed!). Also of stores that received warning s from their systems that certain long shelf life items, like canned goods, had expired ninety-odd years ago.
So it was a real problem but in the late 90s.
RIP Macho Man.

This is a true statement based upon some of the Y2K fixes that I've seen.

I'm not the best one to answer that question, but that is my understanding of Christianity too. That there is some other place besides heaven and hell that is like a waiting room for the dead until Jesus' return. I'm not sure if bad people go there as well. During the three days between Jesus' death and resurrection I think he went there. So I think, according to the bible, grandma's soul is in the waiting room, and she is not in heaven playing a harp on a cloud yet. If I'm wrong, which is entirely possible, I welcome correction, as always.

Hmm. As best I understand Christian theology, the quote attributed to Family Radio is talking about the final judgment and not the rapture.
This whole thing with all the billboards and stuff is definitely catching more attention than your garden-variety doomsday movement does. While I'm no expert on Christian theology, I am certain that the bible is very clear in saying that no one knows the day or the hour. Not even Jesus (the whole trinity thing notwithstanding). So, if you believe the bible, then you have to assume that anyone who says they know the day and the hour is lying. There might be some wiggle room, maybe in the sense that ... hey, if someone says every day that the world is going to end, then one day they'll be right! But that would be the only wiggle room.
But while the bible is pretty clear that no one will know the day or the hour, I'm guessing that no one can keep it from happening when god says it's time for it to happen ... meaning, people can't keep "predicting" the day and the hour in order to stay god because he can't do it if someone predicts it because, hey, no one can know the day or the hour! Here, I think a distinction has to be drawn between actually KNOWING and just flapping your yap.
Anyway, my understanding of the rapture is that the word never appears in the bible, but is only a description theologians (and now pop culture) use to label an event Paul predicts will be a taking-up into the air or something. I think the reason for the focus on the rapture is that - if my Christian friends are correct - according to bible prophecy, nothing else has to happen before the rapture happens. It's "next."
Kind of. This is where it gets a little confusing to me, but as best I understand it, theologians debate on whether the rapture happens before, at the starting point of, during, or after the tribulation period. But at whatever point it happens, nothing else has to happen before to satisfy bible prophecy.
For example, the bible predicts that, before Jesus returns, the antichrist has to reign. Thus, Jesus's return is not "next." But the rapture is.
Quote: WizardI'm not the best one to answer that question, but that is my understanding of Christianity too. My understanding is different, but that doesn't mean I'm right.
As best I understand it, Christianity says that death is like sleeping. When you go to sleep, you're asleep and the next thing you know, you're waking up ... hours later. Similarly, you're dead, and the next thing you know, you're up ... days/years/centuries/millennia/whatever later. Where you "wake up," I'm not sure, but if I understand correctly, it's at the judgment where god sends people to heaven or hell ... although Christians would describe it as "entering into eternity with god as you chose to, or entering into eternity without god, as you chose to," but I'm not sure what that means (especially in light of the whole predestination/free will thing).
Anyway ... we all know that, while you're sleeping, your body and soul are in your bed (or wherever). I don't really understand what the Christian explanation is for when you're dead. Clearly, the body stays behind, we've all seen that for ourselves. The soul does something different than the body, but besides that divorce, where the soul "sleeps", or if the soul is even conscious during that "time" (if we can even think of it in temporal terms) is not something I think the bible talks about.
But I do know that the bible compares it to sleeping, and I also know that it says that Jesus said to one of the other guys at the crucifixion that TODAY he would be with Jesus in paradise. Again ... not an expert ... but I'm told that TODAY = literally TODAY ... kind of like a DAY in the Genesis creation story = a literal DAY.
So, either god does something goofy with time or it doesn't matter because we're (sort of) unconscious while we "sleep." I kind of lean to the interpretation that it doesn't matter. But both guesses could be wrong.
Anyway, as far as the body, the bible also says that our bodies will be raised, so that answers the question of re-marrying the body and the soul. Of course, people get cremated or eaten by a bear and shit out or vaporized in a nuclear explosion. I think the Christians believe that god is able to put the pieces back together again no matter what happened. This is, of course, difficult to imagine, but if the Christian god is who they say he is, then he's the one who could do that, so that never really hung me up that much.
My $0.02.

That web site gets a 404 error, apparently they have redone their website in the past day, maybe because they were getting a lot of hits to it... And perhaps that is the point of the exercise.
The news had him on this morning and he said October 21st, (22nd?) is now the day the brimstone hits the fan. Saturday was just judgment day.

That is what his web site says as well. I thought the first time he was wrong he used that excuse -- that the gates of Heaven closed, but we still had some more time Earth. I'd be a little angry if I gave away all my stuff, and now I have to get by another five months.
When he is proven wrong on 10/21, for the third time, I wonder if he will be contrite and accept that three strikes and you're out. I would hope so, but would lay good odds a fourth date will soon come out afterward. Then again, the web site said the head of that church had a stroke, so maybe he won't make it to see his own strikeout.

I think there's little doubt that he's wrong again.
But ... if you give me 52 guesses, I guarantee I'll guess the card once. If the rapture shall happen as the Christians believe, and crackpots take their 52 (or however many) guesses, one of them will be "right."
All that to say, he along with all similar people before him and who will follow him, will keep guessing, no matter how many times they're wrong. Unfortunately.
