I totally agree. I hate to see this kind of bile on the forum.

how so????
In that case never make a bar bet. Especially if it seems impossible for the guy proposing the bet.Quote: djatcI don't like losing/not winning on technicalities.
I probably just cost myself years of EZ money. Out of fairness you should give me $350.00(not three fiddy) for saving you tons of -EV.
The Bruce comment may have been a bit nasty. Personally when I heard about the sex change I was like WTF this has to be a joke. But I can't hate someone just for doing something especially if it has zero affect on me. Whatever floats their boat, different types of people are interesting.Quote: WizardI totally agree. But the comment... "bet the over if they are female or black" is that really a horrible comment? Can we get some data on that? He may be on to something.
I didn't think it was sexist or racists.
Is it not true that females and blacks tend to do certain things? Am I racists or sexist for believing that? Talk to any level headed female (if you can find one☺) and ask her if certain stereotypes that men have about women tend to be true.

I will admit this could have been written in good conscience but the phrasing "or any black" to refer to a person is offensive IMO. Just putting the word "person" in there would have made it fine. The word black as a descriptor is fine. Referring to a black person as "a black" is the offensive part.

Do I really have to explain this one?
Is the black comment offensive to you, or do you just think it's offensive to black people? Are you black?
Is "a black" offensive but "a female" not offensive?
You were doing OK until you added that little parenthetical comment.Quote: AxelWolf... Talk to any level headed female (if you can find one☺) ...

I am a straight white cis male oppressor.
It does not offend me personally. All I will say is that I think it sounds offensive. And really, I don't care anymore.
Wishing death on anyone seems pretty offensive though, so I stand by my feelings on the Jenner comment.

I started ask about cis, then looked it up, I am so far behind the times...
I don't think it will help me to look up 'oppressor', so I will just move along now.......;-)
Ba da bing <whatever wasn't working this AM seems to be working now> Ta da! 2f
Also I don't see the problem with ontariodealer saying bet the over on blacks and females. If its a good bet its a good bet, unless the reasons are malicious or hateful, in which case I didn't think so from the way he wrote.
My experience was sort of like, "the way that guy said 'blacks and females' it sort of seemed like he doesn't like them much."
"...and he thinks people he disproves of should be executed. Big surprise."
It's cool to know what people are really thinking though. It's easy to fool yourself into thinking such mindsets are extremely rare when you interact mostly with people who are filtering themselves.
As for the betting angle, I'd go a bit beyond race. An R&B singer (more likely black) will probably have a longer anthem, but I would expect it to be baked into the line.
Quote: WizardThe Bruce Jenner comment was worse but my feel for what goes for offensive these days is that "black" can be used without offense as an adjective to describe somebody, but is disparaging as a noun.
Yes the comment about having him/her killed was a bit much for me.
It's just really hard to tell what is allowed and what isn't, depending on where you are. In basic training and tech school we were told to refer to females as females, and I was in during the scandal at Lackland which really ramped up the sexual harassment awareness presentations.
I saw some feminist writing articles about being referred to as a "female" was demeaning, and overheard a conversation about women who thought being called a "female" was weird, and strange.
I don't even know what to call "black people" or "african american" people anymore. I referred to a friend as an "African-American" and he said no I'm black. I had another friend said no I'm a N-word. This obviously was because we knew each other for a while he was comfortable with me saying that, but I probably won't make any new friends saying that to any random person.
EDIT: Nvm, don't feel like getting suspended today.
Quote: RSI never understood the "African American" thing. I mean, I've never heard of someone say "Irish American", "German American", "European American", "Asian American", etc. Not only that, I'd think "African American" would be offensive to black people, since after all, I wouldn't know if the person is African OR American -- but I'd just be calling them African American because their skin is black? Some would say they are just American because they were born in the US, not Africa (I know of some Asians who say this...they aren't Asian, they're just American).

I don't care what your skin color is, we're ALL of African descent.
in my world bruce jenner would be shot....I dont care three s#$%s about him but where i grew up and it was the sixties he wouldnt show himself in public. I got banned on another site when tiger woods got in trouble i commented, in my world the only way he would get on the course would be as a caddy. i didn't mean it racially, it was a fact.
as for the national anthem as a betting vehicle, I need handicapping info on over and under......some 32 yr old white marine sarg comes out and I'm betting the under because he's gonna go "oh say can you see......." but some black dude comes out or any woman and its gonna be "ohhhhhhhhh, sayyyyyyyyyyyy, caaaaaaaaaaan youuuuuuuuuuuu seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"
money in the bank.

People used to say Irish-American and so on a lot, though I've never heard "European-American." I don't know all the reasons that it is now less common, but one might be that we whites are mostly pretty mixed now. I'm a polish-irish-germ... ah, f it. Just white.

It's funny you say that, because my maternal grandparents (who were of predominantly German descent) belonged to a local German-American club in their later years, where they celebrated German culture (food, drink, dancing, etc.). But I agree that it isn't that often. I do often times hear white Americans described as of "white European descent" but usually when an article is already talking about race.
After saying "What's a Mexican firefighter.." the teacher interrupted saying "immigrant, not Mexican" (perhaps said "illegal immigrant, not Mexican").....as if all Mexicans are immigrants. Funny, teacher was trying to be politically correct, when in reality what she said was even more offensive & NOT politically correct.
