Made reservations for May trip as I wanted to try downtown. It was here or The D and with Mission's room cleanliness issues at The D, I opted to give DG a try. Definitlely not as cheap as other options downtown, but brand new remodel opened 12/13 and website makes it look pretty nice. A resort fee of $11per day seemed on the reasonable end of that spectrum. If I have enough time on the trip, I'll do a mini review if one has not been completed by another member by then.
In the meantime, anyone have any thoughts on Downtown Grand?
Quote: Mission146I'll be able to tell you at a later time, I'm actually Reviewing it in April.
Are you going to be there in April? If so, when in April?
Also, for the record and in fairness, I noticed a good few things about the room at the D that other people may not have.
Quote: Mission146I'm not certain of my exact dates at this time.
Try to be there between April 21st and May 3rd. I'd love to meet you.
May is completely out and I have a ton of pre-planned stuff for the week of Monday 4/21.
Quote: Mission146I appreciate that, and I would like to meet you as well, but those dates are impossible. To be honest, I know I am coming between 4/13-4/19, I just don't know if it is 4/13-4/18 or 4/14-4/19, it all really depends on what day I like the Departure time and price the best with respect to my flight.
Hey, I asked first! ;)
Your dates are impossible. Are you aware, too, that April 18th is Good Friday? I expect flights from Mexico to be packed, and cost more, between the 16th and the 19th.
<sigh>
I guess it just won't happen. Too bad.

That saves me the effort and I know yours will be written "more better" than mine :-).

Thank you for the compliment! I've had others tell me I write real good.
I am looking forward to your review to guide me during my visit. I did eat at Pizza Rock on my last visit in January and it was quite good. The place appears to have some association with Downtown Grand, but it is a stand alone restaurant across the street from the hotel, so I am not sure why it is listed as one of the restaurant venues on DG's website. You should definitely go when you are there.

They lie !
I think I will do The Commissary for lunch, Red Mansion for dinner and Stewart Ogden for breakfast the following morning, if I want breakfast that day. If I can get a free restaurant (Pizza Rock) to incorporate into my review from you, I'll take it, because I'm really not planning to return to the Downtown Grand after I stay one day/night and eat at a few places.
I have the free play article that I have to work on, so of five nights I am staying, I'm going to The Strip during the daytime two days. Other than that, I just want to stick to Fremont Street pretty exclusively, with exception to going to El Cortez...maybe.
Quote: Mission146Other than that, I just want to stick to Fremont Street pretty exclusively, with exception to going to El Cortez...maybe.
It's a little known fact but El Cortez is located at 600 Fremont St.
It's basically just that I'm going to do one Craps session and it will either be at Fremont or El Cortez, I'm leaning El Cortez, but it really depends on if the crowd there looks fun at the time. If they don't look like fun, then I'll hit Fremont one morning and hopefully have the table to myself...I've never liked the look of the crowd at that Craps table.
Fremont Street Experience properties mainly because all of my VP will either be at The D or Four Queens when I am not busy vulturing. I'll also wander over to El Cortez every now and then, again, maybe, to check out the Ultimate X machines. I'll definitely be trying to vulture those at Golden Nugget, so I'll be in Golden Nugget a few times a day, in and out.
I know at least two were pretty close together, it's hard to explain where...I only went in there for Free Play, Match Play, $60 Poker Chips for $50 and stuff like that and the Ultimate X. There's an area in there where there are a bunch of columns to the left and that area is inclined, it could be a restaurant, two of them were right near that area, as I recall. My wife and I also ate at their buffet, which was really good, best Vegas buffet I've had so far in a sample size of two. (Main Street Station is the other)
I don't know why, I just found the layout of that place really confusing, so I'll probably still have to look for them all over again when I go back. The only casinos I'd say I know really well are The D, Golden Gate, Four Queens and Fremont. I know the Plaza kind of well, but not great.

Just so you know the Fremont limits odds to 2X.

So do I!

Really? And I thought I was a low roller!
I mostly play 2X, but sometimes I place a bit more. Especially in a $3 game.
I don't think Pizza Rock is directly associated with the hotel the way The Commissary is; The Commissary has ads inside the elevators, and you get a coupon when you check in, but the only thing that links Pizza Rock to it is a takeout menu in each room. (There's also a Pizza Rock opening in Green Valley Ranch soon.)
Oh, and there's nothing to see at 4th & Stewart where those big signs saying "THE MOB MUSEUM" are, and make sure you allow at least 90 minutes when you're there, although I don't have any idea where you got the idea that there's a museum there or that it includes some history of organized crime in the USA (it's not limited to Vegas - at least it wouldn't be limited to Vegas if there was a Mob Museum there, and what gave you the idea that there is?).
Quote: ThatDonGuyHere is a trip report from when I stayed at the DG June 15-20. Not much to add (8/6 JoB seems to be the best VP there, and it's at 25c level), except that the hotel doesn't have a fourth floor, which I assume is the Asian equivalent of not having a 13th floor (which is also "missing").

I apologize if misread your post, but there IS a mob museum. It's the building across the street from the Downtown Grand just north of the walk way overpass leading to the west tower.

I suppose next you'll be telling me it has three levels (well, technically, four, but I think the basement is a "staff only" storage area), and you're supposed to work your way down from the top...and yes, all exits lead through the gift shop, complete with "I Saw Nothing At The Mob Museum In Las Vegas" T-shirts.
Quote: GreasyjohnHey Admins, why doesn't the DG have it's own listing under Las Vegas Casinos. It's lasted almost one year and it's not "small."
On the same note, O'sheas is under defunct casinos. Just walked through O'sheas last weekend :-)
Pretty sure they are keeping O'sheas as it is even though its connected to the Quad which is changing its name to the Linq

And why hasn't the Casuarina been updated as The Max? And the Barcelona is still listed when it's been Siegel Slots and Suites for over three years.

It is listed here. If that isn't what you're talking about, then what list are you referring to?

Good point about the Casuarina. Where to you find mention of the Barcelona?

It's listed in the Las Vegas Casinos section, (five listings before Casuarina).

Sorry, but can you give me a link. There are so many lists on this site.

I assume he wonders why there's no dedicated forum for it, as opposed to lumping it in under "Small Casinos". Didn't Lady Luck have one at one point?
On the other hand, if they started doing BIG THINGS (having the worst VP pay tables downtown isn't a good start), and people actually talked about the damn place a bit....then give it its own forum.
Well, right; there's nothing to see there because it isn't at 4th & Stewart. It is a block away from there to the west at 300 Stewart, on the north side of Stewart Avenue where 3rd Street would be if it continued further north across Stewart. Not at 4th Street. It is a three story building that was the old federal courthouse years ago.Quote: ThatDonGuyOh, and there's nothing to see at 4th & Stewart where those big signs saying "THE MOB MUSEUM" are, and...

If you ever see any mob stuff at 4th Street you should probably call the cops, because something fishy is going on at the corporate headquarters of Zappos, Inc.
Quote: RSI've never seen a full table at the DT Grand in their entire one pit on the floor. And never seen a player in the HL room. It is a small casino.

They did just recently get 8/5 Bonus Poker. And the casino is much larger than the Golden Gate (which has it's own entry, and I believe doesn't have 8/5 Bonus Poker).
Quote: AlembertI am hearing that the Grand recently upgraded to 10X odds on their craps table. Is this true?
It was 10x when I was there last week.
Quote: wudgedIt was 10x when I was there last week.
That is fantastic!!! I will have to put them back in the rotation of places I play at on my next trip.
Craps was $3 - $500, 10x odds, pay for buys on wins only.
Friendly staff, and the carpet and furnishings are still in good shape after a year of operation.
When I was there two weeks ago, I noticed that they got rid of the Small/All/Tall bets and put in FireBets. And the FireBet pays on three numbers.

How much does it pay on 3 numbers? I haven't seen this before. Do they lower the payouts on 4/5/6 points to compensate?
It's a good thing the WOV 2015 Spring Fling stopped in for a few hours of fun.
Downtown is adrift in changes.
The Las Vegas Club, East Fremont Street and now this.
What's next?
