Bruno Mars announced a multi-year residency deal with the MGM conglomerate back in 2016 where he'd be performing at the MGM resort in Las Vegas. Although everything was going great for a few years, the singer now has a multimillion-dollar gambling debt with the casino.
On March 16th, it was reported that Bruno Mars now owes millions of dollars to the MGM casino after reportedly accumulating hefty poker debts. “(MGM) basically own him,” a Vegas source stated via News Nation.
"He makes $90 million a year off of the deal he did with the casino, but then he has to pay back his debt… after taxes (Mars makes $1.5 million per night).” Ninety million after taxes is closer to $60 million.

To me, hefty poker debts means he lost $ to other poker players and not to mgm, which makes sense since I assume he's not allowed to gamble against the House he works for (like all other employees).
So he just borrowed $ from MGM to play poker?
If so, That's like saying Citibank owns me because I have a mortgage with them.
What am I missing?

I believe it may be he took out a line of credit for buy ins and losing that money to other players now owes MGM the money borrowed for him to play.

I think it's more likely that whoever wrote the article doesn't know the difference between poker and table games. Just using "poker" as a catchall term for any gambling card game.
On the flip side

"Despite the wagon-circling and PR bullshittery, Bruno Mars’ penchant for gambling is the worst-kept secret in Vegas. Mars is to MGM Resorts as Celine’s husband (René Angélil) was to Caesars. MGM’s table games revenue in Q4 2023 was among the highest (possibly THE highest) in the company’s history, due in no small part to Bruno Mars."
Bruno can gamble slots/tables at MGM even though he's an employee??Quote: terapinedMGM is saying the story is BS

Is he considered a contractor?

He wouldn't be considered an employee.
Employees of casinos must meet certain requirements not least of which is obtaining a license to operate in the casino. Every dealer, cashier, most especially security and surveillance and even the cleaning staff require state licenses to work inside a property.
An entertaining headliner like Mars certainly wouldn't be required to obtain gambling permits to work in a casino just to headline entertainment.
He would be considered an independent contractor I suppose. While hired for an extended time most entertainment is hired for just a few nights, even just an evening. They certainly can gamble at the property when not performing.
They have no real inside or input into the Every day to day aspects of the gambling operation itself.
