Any locals have more details?

I don't think that's what they meant when they said that the pool scene at the Cosmo was "smokin'"...

I have some pictures, it started at the bamboo pool. The fire department showed up, but it looks like it burned itself out, they evacuated the west tower for sure. A lot of people sitting over at the Aria in the ballroom.

Funny, I thought maybe the link wasn't working, but it just shows the link in the list form for threads which is probably a good thing.

Looks like that video was made by someone at the Vdara. All of the synthetic palm trees were burning, the cabanas next to the tower, and lounge chairs. Bad day at the Cosmo. If only there had been something handy to douse the fire before it had spread.

Not a small fire.

It was small, I was on the 22nd floor watching through the window as it spread from Palm tree to palm tree. It did spread pretty quickly.

Or perfectly as planned(assuming no one was hurt). Sometimes a fire is good for business. I'm guessing this will make some of the nationwide news programs.

fast spreading and generating thick smoke.... glad it didn't get into the air conditioning system.

could the burning trees be toppled into a pool or some brave soul do a firebreak by moving a potted tree?

The Bloodhound Gang weighs in:

"The roof the roof the roof is on fire
The roof the roof the roof is on fire
The roof the roof the roof is on fire
We don't need no water let the motherf-er burn
Burn motherf-er burn"

Maybe it didn't look too menacing there, but if I'm on an upper floor and see a pretty good fire below and very close by and am not sure of the cause, I might casually start down.

Might have been plane #1.

(Hey, those buildings aren't going to hold up either.)

Reports are possibly a cigarette thrown from a upper floor. I hope they don't make the snap decision to close the balconies based on one idiot. Not allowing smoking, now that would be nice.

It could have been a tossed cigarette, but my money would be on a cigarette left by a pool goer accidentally at one of the cabanas. I've spent a lot of time at that pool and a lot of people get drunk in the cabanas since you have to rent them out by buying at least $400 in food and drinks. Sometimes the price is higher. From my floor, it looked nasty, those fake trees went up quick. Haven't seen anything burn like that since I was in Iraq.

So that's what that was. I was next door in Aria, and someone in the book loudly said something about a bunch of smoke or fire supposedly going on or somesuch, which seemed to get the attention of a few people, briefly, for several seconds until they began loading in the gate at Del Mar and the Cardinals hit a sacrifice fly to break a scoreless tie on a close play at the plate and everyone went back to ignoring whatever that whole smoke/fire/burning business might be about that nobody had live tickets on.
Suck dope, watch TV, make up stuff, be somebody on the internet.
