I know that other hotel roof caught fire because of welders and flammable material nearby (think that's what happened)

Good thing no one was hurt.
People balk at fire codes/regulations all the time, but they've come a long way and saved a lot of lives since the MGM Fire that killed 87.

I watched the DuPont Plaza fire from a hotel balcony across Ashford Avenue from it. We were about nine stories high and it was fascinating. Until they started bringing out body bags. Almost 100 people died, mostly in the casino, and PR went into a week long mourning period. Lousy time to be there on vacation.
Hotel had no sprinklers or PA system, most peoples first sign of fire was either heat or smoke. Fire Department had no ladders and their was no emergency landing pad on the roof.
A couple of busboys set the fire, trying to get management to improve their union benefits or something.

I seem to recall a poster on this site claiming they survived the MGM fire. I also believe the claim (or the poster in general) was debunked.

Fire at the Golden Nugget less then an hour ago. Canopy on fire hotel evacuated.. Saying cigarette was the cause.

That is true, but it was to avoid an expected union demonstration. No one expected a fire. What I heard on the coconut telegraph was that a newly promoted manager was very prejudiced against both dark skinned and gay employees and was trying to push them out of positions that dealt with the public.
